Word too prescriptive/too auto-styled.

Good morning folk,

I wondered if anyone can help me turn off an auto formatting feature in
Microsoft Office Word. ( I've managed to stop a lot of the auto formatting
deluge myself, but still sometimes get stuck.) My current bugbear is an
inability to string hypens across the page to varying lengths, without them
turning into single lines which run from margin to margin. It would make a
huge diffs to me to be able to do this.

If only I could do it like this

and this

In fact I would love to turn off all but the most basic Word auto formatting
features, but they seem very keen to stay put!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Please feel free to consult the Word experts in the Microsoft Word newsgroup:

Carey,

Thank you for this.

I have found it quite difficult tracking down an appropriate Word
newsgroup, or articles by experts on this subject. I've not been able to
access the 'newusers' group. I did try, but couldn't find it (eventually
tried via a straight Google search.) Part of the problem may be that I use
Word 97. Most of the info seems concerned with later versions.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
