so I don't have to buy another one 6 months from now.
Jumping the gun a bit. "HAVE to" not for years, 'see even the slightest benifit from in games, not 'til the end of the year, and then, amybe nothing worthwhile mentioning. At which point the next nV and next ATI will be running that SM3.0 ladden code much smoother.
Also rememebr that everything will be SM2.0/3.0 for the foreseeable future until there are enough PS3.0/Vs3.0 equipped cards to make it benificial to differentiate. Doubt you'll see that before 2005.
Plus the 6800u has more features than ATI's and is more compatible with games.
I smell a kinney in that quote. More compatible with games? Not really. More hype than reality. Funny how the TWIMTBP games have problems with the nV cards, but run fine on ATI cards. Guess that's because they are so compatible, right?
The only real knock on the 6800u is the power consumption and it's comparable to the 9800xt so it doesn't bother me much.
Comparable to the R9800XT, not really. Maybe at idle, but if that's all you're doing with your card, 2D, then I'd suggest sticking with Intel Extreme Graphics solution. Compare the 0.13 equal parts and the GF6800 looks out of place (clocked lower even), if you compare to the very end of the 0.15 generation you are bound to see baseline eqalities, but the potential eficinecies from the new process seem wasted. 288W under load versus 261/263 is sitll noticeable for a part that isn't even the expected UltraExtreme.
Not trying to switch anyone's opinion,
Don't worry, I doubt anyone would be swayed by the above, nothing to even take into consideration really.
