[bold]the little yellow connector is most likely video in, as the cards have Rage Theater chips on them.[/bold]

Correct, and it's for a connector at the front of the case. I've seen it reported that the yellow connector will only be on cards for the Euro market. Removed for US cards

Sounds like Fugger "hey there is software that doesnt run on AMD cpus" now there "hey there is software that doesnt run on Nvidia GPU's".

Man oh man this forum has some characters in it.

Nah haven't had time yet, really just dropping in from time to time evenhere (busy day at work today). I haven't even read all of Lars' or [H]'s review. Read the B3D one at lunch, enjoy the more through re-work of the features.

I'll take a look in a moment.

BTW, love the new control panel, hopefully added functionality, and not just smoother looking.

Look at that tab, Profiles! Guess <b>THAT</b> is what Terry was talking about, eh?!? 😎

As my mentor, I will ask this question to you...

In the X-bit Labs review, they have 2 results for GeForce 6800 a normal one and a "opts. off" results, and some games or at high-res/HQ this impact greatly GeForce 6800 performance... The problem is that Xbit don't give explanations and THG don't even mention this... Do you know what this is all about???

I'm a bit confused, do Xbit have the ability to diable CHEATS/OPTIMISATIONS or whatever trick nVidia use???

Please GreatGreatApe, help me with this issue!

Maybe it's just me, but the Xbit article sounded very biased for ATI. When ATI wins by a little, the guy says ATI wins this here, and when Nvidia wins by a little, he just says could be error during measurement.

Haven't had a chance to look yet.

I'll let you know.

Gotta look at GW's first (only fair as he did ask first  ).

Nvidia made that bed and has to sleep in it.

Dude just read EB's blurb, and then the actual 3Dchips' article. Definitely looks like application detection. Hmm, wonder who mentioned that earlier? Oh well, anywhoo...

I found it funny EB asks "<i>If you read German and feel charitable, any translations of the article in question would be most appreciated. </i>". What? Never Heard of Babel/Google? Now I used to speak and read German when I was very young, but I know how to use the tools at my disposal (maybe from all my reading of the 3Dcenter's work), so I don't kill my braing trying to remember what Aliasing is in German  .

PaulH posted that article earlier in the day (didn't get a chance to finish that either), and this seems to be a follow up to it claiming "fraud". Here's the Babeled version;
<A HREF="http://world.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?lp=de_en&url=http://www.chip.de/news/c_news_11844422.html" target="_new">http://world.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?lp=de_en&url=http://www.chip.de/news/c_news_11844422.html</A>

The funnies bit of the original article is the name they change FarCry.exe to "<b>FART</b>CRY", now that made me Cry and Fart Laughing, I just couldn't help myself.

ATI may always have Quack, but now nV has FARTCry! Oh man gotta keep that one.

Oh well even more to talk about I guess. TWIMTB-Pooped!

Just quickly from what I've seen of the Xbit review (still just poping in here while waiting for things to process) it's their Brillinear optimization that is turned off. Look at the RTCW first test and they mention it. Meaning they don't find it an equal test with the optimizations. And yes they do have the ability to force the Trillinear in these versions of the Drivers with the GF6800 (I think it's still not possible with the FX series IIRC), but they can't turn off those for the ATI (but I haven't seen people complain about the ATI IQ other than the rotational method nV now adopted as well). Here's where they make mention of it; <A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/r420-2_4.html" target="_new">http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/r420-2_4.html</A>

I'll see if I can see the investigation into this, I think DriverHeaven looked into this with the initial GF6800 release.

I'll look at it closer in a bit, and re-post if something changes.

But should we consider this as unfair of fair optimisation? If it's fair and it's not affecting IQ, so ATI should implement this in their drivers too.

I can't wait to see a "Optimisations" TAB in the video drivers control panel, with one toggle and big warning that would look like this :

<i>Click here if you want to let us optimise the performance of your video card.
These optimisations are done through software and may affect/reduce image quality in some games or benchmarks but can provide dramatic improvements in performance in many games and benchmarks.

Performance numbers with optimisations ON can't be used as reference. These optimisations exists to achieve higher FPS in games and they are not approved by respective software developers.

Click here for the list of games that take advantage of these optimisations.</i>

This would clearly let nVidia/ATI or whatever company cheat/optimise/detect whitin their drivers. Users would have the choice to use these optimisations or not and reviewers would be able to easily benchmarks games with optimisation ON/OFF and recommend their readers to leave it ON or OFF for specific games. Will we see this someday? I hope so! This would "legalise" optimisations and I think no one would complain about this.

I will start a petition/lobbying to make this idea become a reality.

Not a bad idea. The thing is those that care most usually know how to disable (although there was no option for the FX series with the latest drivers).

The difference is that the Brillinear is somewhat noticeable, but increases speed to near ATI levels. On the GF6800 series it shouldn't really be necessary.

ATI's optimization doesn't affec the image quality too much, but some people notice it while playing. You will get people from bothsides saying this or that, but most reviewers don't like brillinear if others will allow you true trillinear.

For the most part though we already have those tabs, they allow you to select quality levels. The problem with these optimizations is that it doesn't matter what you do, it doesn't affect that your selections will be overriden by the mfr's choice for this application.

At least GPU makers should have a "purist" setting in their "quality" sliders. We would have the opportunity to slide from HIGH PERF. to PURIST QUALITY.

Everything would probably run slower, but we would have damn good IQ!

I'm all for more options.

I might not use them, but maybe I will. I guess the question is whether enough people will use them to dedicate the man hours to add the option.

I think ATI's IQ is about at max right now when set to high quality. They only other thing they could do is work with other companies to improve automatic items.

Sure their IQ still isn't up to Matrox's, but that's more hardware limitations than software, and therefore not adjustable.
