I have a Saphire rad x850xt. I was running ati tool for about 10 minutes just with the 3d view and no overclocking and its going over 100 degrees is there a problem with the cooler - its a stock cooler.

I'm going to jump on the its probably the program messing up but...

A friend of mine an X850 XT PE and he was running at 80 C under load.

He searched around and found that some stock heatsinks are extremly inadequate.

If you find that the program is right (holy crap thats hot) then try Artic cooling

Check the heatsink, make sure it's seated correctly. Also, try cleaning the chip and applying your own thermal paste. When I took my sink of my x800 it had way too much goop on it.
However, 100C is really hot. Dangerous, maybe. I don't really know, but I'd be worried. With stock heatsink my x800 would hit 78C. I now have the Zalman passive sink (got rid of that ear busting fan) and it only gets up to around 70C overclocked 10%.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, I tried that everest program and played far cry for half an hr, had a look on there and it was running up to 104c.

I think I better do something to it before it dies lol.

Cheers

Got some cooler master high performance thermal compand. Took the cooler off, was loads of dust trapped in the heat sink removed all that, there was even a bit of dust on the core lol and the paste was hardly on one side of it lol.

Anyway put the paste on put it back together, played far cry for 30mins and was staying around 65c 😀

So thanks for the help seems cool now.

Cheers

And yeah it musta bin going 100c+ there was slight burning on the heatsink lol.

I had the same problem. And as a matter of fact it's not uncommon for the 8XX series with stock cooling to run at 90C or a little more. Mine hit 105C before I cleaned it.

I replaced the stock cooler with a zalman and get 65C under load now.

That's weird mine doesn't go above 65 with the stock cooler,
O/C-ed to 580 core, heck the memory overheats more than the the actual core.

I think you need to set your fan setting to 100% once it reaches 50-60 degrees. Some sapphires had a problem where the fan would get stuck at 5% and it would reach 90 degrees (including mine).

hmmm.... I've seen lots of peeps with this card and they all got heat problems. Maybe it's just pure luck to get one with the stock cooler correctly attached?

But nonetheless; the stock cooler is awfully loud, and gets dusted up very easily due to its stupid design. So I would reccomend getting a better one anyway. (I've got the zalman VF700-AlCu - reasonnably easy to install and effective. -30C under load...)

That "stupid design" you refer to, kicks all the hot air out of the case.
It does need a little cleaning once in a while, though.

I'd get an aftermarket cooler like an ATI silencer,
but the way things are going with games, i'm going to need a new video card soon anyway.

I'm pretty sure this has to do with your card 'cause mine ran @ 50ish degres on idle and 65ish at full load after a long time playing games, and that was with the stock cooler, since then i changed it to a AC silencer and the temps are now idling @ 37-40 degres and 55-59 degres at full load. And has ppl have said before, the factory compound was really messy when i took the OEM cooler off. Also check your fan settings because lot of problems are related to the fans not running fast enough even at full load. I personnaly use ATItool and find it quite accurate regarding temps and info about the card, and also i'd like to point out that even with the stock cooler i still had headroom to overclock the thing nicely. Anyways maybe you got a bad one or something as gone FUBAR since they made mine. Good luck.

Don't worry, I think ATI Tool still has some kinks to be worked out of. It says my brand new X1600PRO runs at 69C Idle, case opened or closed

You should've gotten an HIS X850XT with IceQ 2. Since you're stuck with your Sapphire card consider getting an aftermark VGA cooler with a heat sink because the Sapphire card's heat sink just won't handle even the slittest load without excessive overheating. Or consider a system exhaust blower because it's probably the heat in your case causing your gpu to overheat.

Artic Cooling High Performance VGA cooler/Heatsink for ATI 800/850 gpu's= $19.99

Zalman Fatality VGA Cooling Fan/Heatsink= $49.99

Dynatron System Exhaust Blower= $3.99

Here's a tip next time you plan on purchasing an ATI gpu, buy an HIS ATI gpu with IceQ 3.

damn youre 6600gt beat my 6800gt by 5c
as doug said, before anything take your card out
and check the heat sink use a flashlight if you have to
it may be just dust.

put your hand next to it, if its warm, then your screwed. if its not, then your program is messed up and dont bother downloading others... you'll be fine

i have the same card although mine didnt get that hot it did get hotter than i liked, i did a little research and found that the fan settings in the bios are not correct for this card. Supposably it is editable in the bios, but for now i use ati tool to to override the stock fan settings and it works great and never goes over 65C.
