After upgrading to XP SP2 I get the following message on my network connection icon near the bottom right hand screen.

The connection has limited or no connectivity.

Therefore, I cannot access the internet. I connect through my cable subcriber, Optimum Online. I have 2 other PC and they connect without a problem (SP2 not installed on those 2).

I have an ASUS P4C800 Deluxe motherboard. I added a different NIC and disabled the onboard NIC and I still get the same message.

Has anyone seen this problem? Most of the postings I have seen about this issue seems to be of a Wireless connection. This is no wireless adapter on my PC.

This is actually quite normal. I haven't heard of anyone installing SP2 and NOT getting this message. I get it myself, yet my Internet works perfectly. However, you say that your Internet is no longer working after installing SP2, which isn't very surprising at all, since SP2 is very buggy and I don't typically recommend installing it. In most cases, the Internet should continue to work fine after installing SP2, but it has messed up the Internet for thousands of people, and usually the only way to get the Internet back is to simply uninstall "Windows XP Service Pack 2" from the Add/Remove Programs. I'm a tech support agent for Verizon Online and I get customers calling in every single day saying that they've just installed SP2 and the Internet no longer works. I help them uninstall SP2 and the Internet starts working right away. I've also had numerous people with SP2 installed and that "limited connectivity" message, yet the Internet works fine. First time I installed SP2 was a little over a month ago, at which point it completely stopped my Internet from working, so I uninstalled it. About a week ago I decided to give it another chance and installed it again, and this time the Internet continued to work just as before. Bottom line is that SP2 is still very unreliable and requires a lot more work before releasing to the public if you ask me.

Have you read?

First thing i would do is turn windows firewall off to see if that is the problem. It is turned on by default when you install sp2. Do an ipconfig /all at the cmd prompt you should see alot info. but you want to look for ip address 0.0.0.0 = which means you can not get an ip address from you isp because you are using dhcp to obtain one. This would be the firewall blocking your internet access to your isp dhcp server. If it is the firewall problem i would turn it back on and i would add your internet connection to the allow exceptions list. Good luck.

This is caused when XP can't get an IP address from a DHCP server. Simply manually enter an IP (192.168.0.xxx) and the message will go away.
