Yikes! Another blow to Nvidia

Doesn't it strike you as utterly STUPID that companies are rushing out CONSOLES and not GAMES?

Where have the good old days of quality games gone to?
The SNES lasted 7 damn years, the NES over 8!
N64 lasted a good 6. Now Xbox will have been here for what, 5-6 years tops, along with PS2.

Shame, really.

BTW do you have some links on the FF on GC thing?
I know only of Crystal Chronicles, but am already disappointed they have screwed so much with the FF serie with FF11 and this, having no more ROLE PLAYING elements, but rather Diablo-style whacking. This sucks, I'll miss the cool swirl effect when a battle starts :frown: .
I heard they wanted to stop FF at FF12, but I am not sure, perhaps it was FF16.
In either way I hope the FF creator and music composer stays. (damn he knows how to compose.)

Also, where did you see MGS2 revamped on GC? That'd be swell to get, but I don't see it. I know there is an excluse GC MGS.

I made a mistake with the MGS2 thing (got it confused with Splinter Cell). But MGS2 did appear on the XBox. I think it was Solid Snake.

FF on the gamecube is mainly press articles stating that Sqyaresoft and Enix have signed an agreemant with nintendo to produce further FF titles exclusively for nintendo.

There is a FF12 being made (not to be confused with FFX-2).
The FF series of games will keep going on and on it's just that they may get rid of the number at the end like they did with CC. I'm sure that the Role Playing element will remain it's just that the battle sequence has moved over too real time. Not sure how it'll work with 1 player though.

I think the composer has left the FF projects all together as he didn't work on FFX-2.

Real time, IMO, does not deserve to be called RPG. In my eyes, FF, Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Mystic Quest, all are RPGs, REAL ones.

I think the composer has left the FF projects all together as he didn't work on FFX-2.
Damn it Nobuo, where have you gone?

nah, that would be turn based strategy games. RPGs for many years have been realtime based, generally they've been on the PCs but they were RPGs the same. Baldur's Gate, Morrowind, etc. all count as RPGs.

Hmm, turn-based? Why would they then be called RPGs all along?

Ahh anyways, I always found RPGs to be turn based, not "Action-RPG" like those you pointed out, à la Diablo style.

I heard nobuo uematsu decided not to do X-2 but was still on for FF12. And those of you (not you Eden) who think that PS2 sucks, think again. That thought is ludacris... heh. You're saying that 52 million people mindlessly bought crap? What about Gran Turismo? Silent Hill? Need for Speed HP2? Dark Cloud? Devil May Cry? And hundreds of other top quality games. Now, PS2 does have dozens of crappy games, just like any other console. But for every bad one, there are probably 8 good ones, and 2 great ones. Get your facts straight.

Oh yeah, Eden, there was ONE real time RPG that I would include. It was called the Granstream saga for PSone. It was not very well known, but I loved it.

nVidia cheated on me so I left her for ATi. ATi's hotter anyway...

Eden, an RPG isn't based around it's fight sequences, it's all about the role playing aspect which is doable in both real time and turn based fight sequences.

Daddywag I think your stats are slightly confused, there's been a lot more crap on the PS2 then there has been good and the majority of those PS2 buyers did so mindlessly. The main reasons why customers buy the PS2

Their son's/daughter's friends have one.
Their child has a PSOne.
It's the first thing they see when they walk through the door.

The only games to have sold a PS2 in any number in the past few years have been GTA and the EYE toy

And even the PS2's best games are only okay. FFX is nowhere near as good as FF7 or Skies of Arcadia, GT and Need for Speed pale into comparison against Burnout 1 & 2. Tomb Raider was a case of regurgitated crap. While Dark Cloud and Devil May Cry are good that's 2 titles out of about 400 in the PS2 catalouge.

i agree

the titles while super hyped just dont fulfill the "funfactor" of previous platforms

Back in the old days, wasn't Microsoft originally going to go with a 3dfx chip for the X-Box but changed their minds in favor of Nvidia?

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

In the old days MS never planned on releasing an XBox. They attempted to buy out Nintendo. Nintendo said no and I think by that point 3DFX were no more.

well firstly I can't belive such an ATI-fanboy laden thread has been continuing on so long. Wow!

secondly, I don't think it is such a low blow to nVidia that MS' next console will carry an ATI GPU. For one, the next one isn't slated out till 2005 or so from what I've heard. Thats about 2 years. Enough time for nVidia to work on their main focus anyways: the best GPU's for computer users. While ATI is focusing on their research for the next GPU for both MS and Nintendo, nVidia will be (or probably has been) working on their next GPU lines. So really its not such a "low blow to nVidia" but more of an advantage. They should THANK ATI for working on console GPU's. It takes ATI's main focus away from better drivers and moreso on hardware development.

You can't really think that nVidia will focus more on their graphics cards cause they lost the XBox2 deal. The GPU nVidia created for MS was a prototype for both the GF4 Ti and the nForce series of motherboards. When ATI make the XBox 2 chips it will be done in a similar vein but now that ATI have more experience with motherboards it will take less time and work better. nVidia will put all that extra effort into integrated graphics and mobile solutions seeing as ATI are taking the initiative in this area.

The console market is a lucrative one cause it requires less work than the PC market and can give better financial results.

And it will be a blow as the XBox deal made up for 20% of nVidia's profits.
Edited by Gastrian on 08/21/03 02:44 PM.

Well, I'd say this is more of an opinion, so I'll let it at that.
I personally disagree, but not that much because I too don't see THAT many games like the GC will boast, all of them being premium quality. (I have 4 games, all from Nintendo, and I have yet to complain, they were all simply 9+/10 kinds of games)

As for RPGs, I'm beginning to think I have been taking the wrong definition of ROLE, ROFL......since over 6 years! 😱

I'm curious though Phial, do you play FF games? (or like)
Heck, do you like most of Squaresoft's RPGs?

Good reply to DinoX. That is pretty much what is to be said.

Heck, a 9800PRO GPU in an XBox would literally kill any graphics on consoles, and will likely play even the most intensive games possible for a LONG time. (assume the best resolution that is played on it is 1024*768 too, lol!)

It's probably only going to be a Radeon 9600pro. But then again so far the only console to achieve a game with a steady 60fps during gameplay is the GC with FZero so even the basic chip in the GC is as powerful as what nVidia put into the XBox. The next chip will be even better.

Except Xbox CAN be much better in graphics and maintain solid frame rates. DX8 technology and a fast GPU help.

GC uses non-DX (although some would attribute it to DX7), and it contends with cheaper graphics, though the excellent harnessing of the engine and the gameplay make any quality GC game beautiful. TVs blur enough to make any new 3d console sound like it can render high polygon characters.

That is the problem, so much power not enough people utilising it. Supposedly even Microsoft can't use the full power of the XBox as Halo2 will run between 30-40fps (according to rumours) even though it can handle much better. Is it down to lazy software companies not making full use of the power at hand or is it poorly written drivers preventing the developers from utilising all that hardware.

First of all FFX kicks arse, second of all, PS2 has the most games out of all three of them and majority of them kicks arse

second of all, ATi would never put a 9800pro in a console, it's about one of the stupidest things ATi could do. Why? cause that is going to cost ATi a sh**load of money to produce for X-Box and if they dont sell well, bye bye ATi. Keep in mind that ATi is not even 1/2 of nVidia. If X-Box screws up, so does ATi, and they're going to have a much bigger impact than what happened to nVidia.

anyhow, CELL will rule all, so be prepare to be crushed ATi

FFx was the lamest in the FF series. It wasn't fun it was tedious. I sell consoles for a living and I can tell you straight away that 4/5s of the PS2 catalouge is 7/10 or lower material.

The XBox won't screw up, it will sell irrespective of it's power as the games available don't even push the console to it's limits. The XBox is a safe bet to do well or good.

I also don't think its a big blow b/c remember what happened with 3dfx and consoles? So again I say that b/c of that, nVidia will still focus on the PC market (desktops and laptops) and ATI will have that console market to deal with. I'm not saying Consoles don't sell well. Their games sell really well. But its also a gamble with the console market depending on WHEN the company releases their console.

Heck, who is to say that Nintendo's next console would rule Microsofts? Also what about the next Playstation? :)
