Ryan closed videl's thread so i decided to re-open 😉

Much appreciated :)

Might also try the other PCI-e X16 slot and see if the other slot also shows it as x8 or properly sees it as x16.

Thanks for the replies, I have tried it in the other slot but it's the same story. Also due to my bad luck the GPU was the only thing I bought that was second hand, got it from from ebay, it had never been used and bought as new but I have no original proof of purchase so I am stuck with it. I guess I will just buy 2 more 5870 in future and stick this one in the slowest bottom slot of my mobo lol. Should be alright then.

The 5 series is not even 7 months old, you should be able to get service regardless if you registered the card or not. If this was an old GPU past it's warranty then it would be another story.

Anyways if you do find the card to be faulty I would suggest you give the manufacturer a call.

AS Ovrclckr mentioned the cards have been made for less than a year so should still be covered by warranty (actually they should be able to tell the date it was made from the chips,PCB, etc. on the board.) I'd contact the manufacturer and explain the problem to them and see what support has to say ( just do not mention buying it second hand) - most companies will honor the warranty for a card line that is newer than the warranty period - since all of the cards shipped to date would still be covered.

Sapphire VGA products carry a 2 year warranty with all enquires carried out through your initial place of purchase. This can only be carried out by the original purchaser Please contact your Dealer/Reseller for Warranty / RMA service. They will require proof of purchase which includes the original invoice/documentation.

I other words, I am screwed. Thanks for the help though. I will just keep it as it is performing great anyway. I will add another couple when I get round to it. I have contacted Sapphire just in case they don't ask me for proof of purchase but looking at their warranty conditions that looks doubtful. Last time I try saving a bit of cash that's for sure lol. Thanks all.

Hi, I have not had the chance to try the card on another PC yet but other cards report as x16 on this mobo for sure. I have tried reflashing my mobo bios and have tried several 5870 bios that were meant for other brands. It is a Sapphire card but right now I am using the unlocked Asus bios so I can OC the hell out of it.

I have been in contact with Sapphire and have opened a support ticket. They told me all the obvious things like use a pencil rubber on the gold contacts, reinstall driver, use latest mobo bios and chipset drivers....already tried the lot. I replied again and told them the issue still remains, now I just have to wait to find out if a return is possible with no proof of purchase. Fingers crossed!

I know it's not a problem now, but what about when I get more cards for Trifire, surely it's going to make things difficult. Maybe CCC won't let me use the dodgy card in that configuration! I am still waiting for Sapphire to reply. If it's a problem later and they won't replace it, I will just sell it on ebay.

Ok, I've got some new scores. I noticed 06 was definitely being held back by the CPU, so I finally took OvrClkr's advice and upped it to a "stock volts" 1.175V, 3.6 GHz OC. Max CPU temps are about 52-54 C in Prime95.

System Specs:

Intel Core i5 750 3.6GHz > Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P - F8 BIOS > 2x2GB GSkill 1600 @ 1440 7-7-7-21 1T 1.5V > Spinpoint F3 1TB >
Antec 300 Illusion > Sapphire 5850 850/1250 1GB 1.125V - Cat. 10.3a > Corsair 650HX > CM Hyper 212+ > Win7 64 > LCD: XL2370 23"

Results:

3DMark06:
21740

SM2.0: 8801
HDR/SM3.0: 10548
CPU: 5527

Vantage:
P16778

GPU: 16920
CPU: 16369

I'm sure it would do it no problem. It could do 3GHz on 1.08V (stock with vdroop occurring) so 3.8 would not be difficult. However, I have my ram at exactly the speed I want (1430-1440) since I have extensively tested that speed an know it works.

Yea 3.6Ghz is the sweet spot especially if you are have your RAM set at the desired frequency, but that CPU is capable of so much more..

Yesterday I was helping a user here on Toms with his 750 and we got it to 4.2Ghz on Air using a Noctua NH-U12P. Temps were not great but it finished a Vantage run w/o a sweat.
