[citation][nom]raulrapadura[/nom]"Some users will appreciate the very elegant and refined design of the MacBook Pros""Yes, the build quality of the MacBook Pros are industry leading""The only tangible advantage that the MacBook Pros have is battery life, which at the moment is an industry leading across Apple's entire line-up""Another point Apple can get a good point or two for is in weight. The above laptops are significantly heavier, and for being in the class of laptops, is a bad thing."Tom´s says all of that, and then recommned the "Others" laptops?Sony, Asus, etc., are only better in hardware and price. But, who cares about 6GB of RAm instead of 4GB when, games aside, no other usual software uses it? Is better Windows-7 with 6GB than OS-X with 4GB?[/citation]

I've had maybe 2 viruses in the past 10 years. With a little common sense, Viruses aren't a problem in the least.

and i find the keyboard commands much faster than anything a touchpad can do,

Why would you point out this example when you have no multi-touch usage experience?! Was that not the argument we were debating?

Seriously, just stop. You were caught in a lie, just stop now and save yourself humility.

Dell sells ....for a high price
Apple sells poop with whipped cream on it for a much higher price

LOL, that's great, tears are still flowing.......

I've fixed, and trashed, more MB's than all other machines combined when it comes to hardware issues, don't tell me they are built better, they are not. They have fewer software issues simply because the platform is so much more restricted. Thinkpad's are my preferred laptop, rock solid machines.

I've got yet another 15" MBP on my workbench with a bad motherboard, it's cheaper to scrap the thing then fix it, crazy stupid. Unless you keep apple care on your apple, it's cheaper to buy three high end PC's and go through them every two to three years.

I have a VERY large collection of Macs, I'm no fanboy either way, I just say what I see. I like Mac's design's but I haven't nor will I ever buy a new Apple product.

Damn it, now I feel like messing with my IIGS's again, stop with the Apple articles already!!! :)

[citation][nom]nforce4max[/nom]Its Teaparty time in the Boston harbor again.Along with an MacBook I'll toss in the recently passed and unfinished health care bill.[/citation]

Haha because that's a totally appropriate and related topic right? hurrrrrr

Hate to tell ya, but keyboard shortcuts are faster on any OS than any kind of trackpad, including multi-touch. Yes I have a few laptops with Multi-touch and touch screens. I've used them all.

Question. The people complaining about 10 pounds, how weak are you? I have my work laptop (replace laptop with desktop replacement) which has to weigh close to 12 pounds. I huck the thing in a backpack and ride my bike to and from work 4 days a week (12 miles each way) and don't really notice it. I also regularly travel from the states to europe (sweden and italy primarily) with it on my back, and again, don't really notice it. I think I fall in to that "trust me, you have to travel to appreciate a light laptop" catagory. And it's not like I'm a big guy either, I'm a software dev, 5'11" and 170 pounds.

actually the speed for the multi-touch can be extrapolated from a non-multi touch based on trying to move my fingers, ie i am faster at a keyboard than using a touchpad, probably because i use a mouse so much (i keep one with my laptop, since i hate touchpads so much)

it bothers some people, and if you are biking to/from work, you are probably in decent shape, though the laptops they chose i thought were pretty bad examples since the bare bones can be customized with the same parts and are close to the same weight

Dude, this question is pretty much asked for anything that has a computer chip in it, hes not trolling, its a joke, calm down.

Anyways, how is the cooling in those things? my friend has a macbook and he told me it gets really hot and theres just a small space under the screen for heat to escape.

[citation][nom]jonpaul37[/nom]So, i wonder why Dell doesn't just use Aluminum for their notebooks and use better batteries, [/citation]
Because their price will go way up. Look at the HP ENVY and its not even a full aluminum casing but still they charge premium pricing for it.

Dunno - I have a MacBook Pro which I bought 3 years ago (refurbished from the Apple store which saved me about $300). I've upgraded the HD and Ram (it now sports 500GB HD and 3GB of RAM) and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I have a Lenovo T500 (work provided) but the MBP is just a nice machine that keeps on moving along - I have yet to see a computer released (from Apple or other) that I would trade it in for, but I consider the Lenovos in the good category. I've had family members buy Acer or HP and they've always felt flimy... MBPs and Lenovos tend to feel much more solid.

Why did you guys pick the F series Sony laptop?? If you're going to compare Windows 7 based laptops from Sony why not look at the Sony Z series which is a rediculous powerhouse for it's size. It's about $2000 as well but look at what you get instead!

Core i7 2.66 Ghz
13 inch 1600x900 LED backlit (Some international ones do 1920x1080)
4GB ram
128 GB Solid State Drive
Nvidia Geforce 330M / 1GB Vram
Backlit Keyboard
3 lb!

Carbon Fiber Plastic Composite shell with aluminum components.

Apple has almost nothing that can hold a thread to this laptop considering it's netbook sized and has the power comparable to many larger laptops. Granted it isn't cheap.

well, my GF sold the macbook to her mother and bought a netbook since it does what she needs, gets better battery life, and was very cheap

and the reason i am getting a new laptop (replacing Asus Z96JS) is because i need more performance from my laptop (can't wait to get that laptop with 15.6" 1080P screen, same res as my TV and desktop monitor)

the low prices on the pc notebooks are largely due to subsidies from 3rd party software that help lower the consumer costs...
it a trade off with the macbooks, you pay 1.5x the cost but the weight reduces 1.5-2x and the battery life increases by nearly 2x (for similar performance specs)
also OSX come ready out of the box, don't have to worry about the pre-installed anti-virus expiring in 6 months, etc.
having owned both (pc notebooks and mac) I can honestly say that mac has a much better build quality and less failure...also the screen brightness/clarity tend to be a bit better on the macs...
the sony notebook above sounds real nice (prefer the sony style)... now only if it can last a few years without any major problems...

[citation][nom]cyprod[/nom]Question. The people complaining about 10 pounds, how weak are you? [/citation]

It's not about how weak you are but is about comfort.
I am 5'11" 195 pounds and I bench press 210. I still like to travel light and comfortable. I dont like dragging around with me a 10+ pound brick when I have other things to carry too.
It's a question of comfort.... and not how strong you are.

So these Mac destroyers... didn't see bluetooth mentioned... Do they come with a ton of crapware I'd have to uninstall (or do a full, clean reinstall of win 7)? My MSI 6000 came with some garbage and didn't have good/updated trackpad drivers ... my Toshiba came with a lot more (crap) and even came installed with an app I could not uninstall. Do these come with Win 7 Home premium? (32 or 64 bit)?

This was an informative article for me, but as far as the 'apple tax' goes, there's also the fact that a lot of PC laptops come pre-installed with crap, or come with flawed drivers.

also since not one of the companies has a monopoly on a popular OS (like apple)

[citation][nom]hoyt81[/nom]Will they play Crysis?[/citation]

*Sigh* Knew it would happen sooner or later. Very heavy handed and unfair moderating in my opinion. I'll probably be banned now for mentioning it too instead of just being ignored or thumbed down if no one likes my comment just like what *should* have been all that happened with the crysis comment... -_-

my laptops:

Compaq R3140: came with a bit of bloatware not too bad
Asus Z96JS: came with none, i repeat no bloatware
Compal NBLB2L: i am installing Windows 7 that i already have (through school), saved me $100, bluetooth would have been like $20 extra, don't need it

there really isn't a price difference between 32bit and 64bit windows 7 (if there is, then that company is ripping you off)

i also wouldn't say flawed drivers, just outdated drivers (ie old)

i disagree, they warned people about this with a news article about how to use the comment system with news articles, and they explained that posts like "Will it play Crysis" or (First Post" can get you banned

Once upon a time Apple actually put out ground-breaking or at least innovation and full-featured machines to go with their pricing. The new machines are just sad.

While I can't deny they look good and have one of or possibly the best touchpads out there, even if I haven't tried these new models, the rest is 'meh' at best.

Desktop replacement and gaming notebooks walk all over Apple in those niches, as does ultraportables, business machines and mobile workstations. I suppose some of the negative wind really does blow in the right direction, these rigs really seem designed primarily to make you look good at surfing at your local coffee shop. *shrug*

I'm saving up for a notebook ATM and I had hopes about adding a new Macbook to the short list of options but as of right now it's down to either the HP Elitebook 8440p or Lenovo T410.

Just because they warn you about it doesn't make it right or fair.

I own a 13" MBPro and I love it. I have my desktop at home that I use for most things (custom built with Win7 so no Apple fanboy). The main reason I bought the Mac was due to the weight and battery life. I can use it all day at school or running around for work and it does not make my backpack overly heavy.

well it is there site, so i guess they can do it if they want, personally i find those posts extremely annoying and not necessary

if we are talking about if it is right, i don't think so, maybe a warning, then a temp ban, then a perm ban

"The main reason I bought the Mac was due to the weight and battery life."

It's certainly not a bad machine but for the same purposes I'd get an ASUS UL30Vt. It's lighter and has better battery life while costing half as much or less.

The HP Elitebook 2540p is looking quite good for a more professional ultraportable though.

*shrug* To each their own I guess.

Hardcore PC gamer here. Former mac hater. Until I used one of these things for an extended period of time. I'm definitely hopping on the Macbook Pro bandwagon this time around. Until Asus, Dell, etc. can produce a laptop of this aesthetic quality, with an amazing track pad, and unbelievable screen, Apple has my money.

They can do it, but they won't, since today's world is all about cost. Except for those of us who still give a crap about quality. It's not Apple's fault that they have the market cornered. Are there margins relatively huge? Absolutely. But that's capitalism. I'd LOVE to see a PC manufacturer take on Apple's design philosophy- OSX is not what's getting me to buy a Mac this time around.
