[citation][nom]noneedformonkeys[/nom]I have changed out the multi-drive for a blu-ray multi drive on my Dell Studio XPS 1340, which required an almost complete teardown of the internals being the disc drive is under the motherboard. I can tell you that everything under the hood on the Dell Studio XPS says foxconn, and the whole chassis is one piece of aluminum. I have changed some card options under the bonnet of my MacBook-pro, everything says foxconn, and the chassis is one piece of aluminum. ......[/citation]
According to what I heard, Foxconn makes parts for many different companies. But the the materials and build quality varie a lot depend on requirement/price. So even if the internals both come from foxconn, it does not mean they have the same quality.

Will it play crysis?

no, seriously - how well do they play crysis? Has a mac ever been benchmarked on toms?
when do we see some price/performance comparisons with macs included?

I like that the speed of the quads is listed as 2.8, the max single-core speed they can muster, while the MPB is listed at 2.6, rather than the 3.33 it maxes out at.

I am a mac and PC user and in college. I LOVE my macbook pro, but would never touch an iMac or any mac desktops. As a college student, the mbp is WAY more convenient for the following reasons:
1. As stated, the battery life is longer ad helps with those long sessions.
2. It is light weight and i am not annoyed by the extra weight of one of the larger PCs
3. The screen size is smaller and more portable (i have a 13 inch for this reason as well i dont need the extra specs)
4.I can record lectures on garageband (granted you can do this on PCs, I just enjoy remixing the lectures 😉 )
5. I can easily switch between documents as I take notes or work on a project or paper. Makes research light years better as well.
6. When designing things for classes in inDesign or Adobe, it is much quicker and more convenient than when I have on PCs.
7. Quick start up time and little to no crashing in the middle of classes or research(cant be said with PCs.. I've lost several pages of work due to a PC crash...)

In my eyes, getting a PC with many extra specs is like getting an iPad. It has better memory and electronics, but its a hassle to take it anywhere due to size. So to me as a college student, it proves no point.

Honestly, the PC v. Mac laptop battle is determined by what you do. If you are near an electric socket and dont travel much, PC should be your choice. If you travel frequently and dont have instant access to outlets, mac is better.

So what you are saying is to buy a netbook? You do not seem to be too concerned about performance. A little bit of weight is not worth that much in performance and price difference. Like Tuan stated, it is taste of the consumer that will determine their choice in laptop.

I am missing SONY Vaio Z on the list. With a 1920x1080 13"3 display it's the ultimate road warrior's dream. Quite pricey, though.

Nvidia? Fail. Is there a reason Nvidia has a choke hold on the laptop market. They got sued for being dishonest about the issues with the GPU's and decided over a year later to admit they had a problem.

I've been with apple for 8 years, since my first powerbook G3 (I only paid $500 for it used, it was over $3k new). I really like Mac OS X compared to Windows. It, to me personally, is worth the extra money.
I mean, I love how light and thin my macbook is, with its enormous trackpad and 8 hours of battery life, but the operating system is what hooked me to begin with, and still impresses me to this day.
But hey, if you like Windows, by all means stay with Windows. I hear Win 7 is a pleasure. 😛

Though known for pricey and not top spec, but for similar spec, I have not seen any notebook that has similar weight/battery life to mackbook pro 17".
It IS all about consumer's taste. You think a bit of weight and extra battery life is not a big deal. But someone(who left comments here)do think it important. Someone would pay more for pretty looking.... So you don't by mac, someone need/like it will buy.

Oh, flame war, fun... $1919 Alienware, $2350 MBP, (both 15 inch and both have similar specs) mac is almost 1 inch thinner, lighter, better res screen, better battery lfe (at least 2x, if not 3x) better graphics cards, and can run any OS you want. And there's a reason those other computers cost so little, the screen on a mac with a display is 1/2 the cost of the computer. There's a reason why those Cinema displays are so expensive and why the Apple computers are so expensive. Asus' screens are horrible quality, as with anything under the 2k mark. People don't really compare quality. I'm all willing to buy a Pc that has the same quality of build of a Mac, i thought I found one with the Sony Z series, but the cheap feeling of the case is not acceptible. But I'm not here to edjucate, nothing I say will change anybodys opinion, but if you like your PC cheap, awesome, but if you want a quality product That has An amazing support hotline for if it breaks, buy a mac

[citation][nom]ca87[/nom]some people juy buy brands and not looking at the specs and these group of people are apple fans.[/citation]

And I have had Apple fans argue with me that Mac is cheaper with better hardware than PC.

Guess this is a lie to them.

Apple forgets to tell you that a complimentary worm that rots your brain comes with every Mac.

What Apple has that other laptop company has is slow depreciation. If you plan to upgrade your laptop about every 2-3 years, it's much more cost effective to buy a Mac because you'll be able to sell your laptop at a higher price compared to other laptops.

Apple uses LiPoly batteries in the macbooks. They are less expensive (afaict), much lighter, can take any shape you want (no more fitting cylinders into cubes!), provide more energy... They only have one problem: they explose when incorrectly charged and get damaged when discharged too much.

LiPoly batteries have been used in iphones and previous macbook 17" pros (not the other ones) without problems. However, bugs exist and components get older.

See these nice videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQheOtdCTjs (several videos combined)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3o_2mwRPdw (ad for a protection bag, lots of smoke)
Don't miss this one (mechanical damage? so it means a shock is enough to ignite the batteries?):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OsBc8RqSKU

The battery in a 17" macbook pro is probably much bigger than the ones on the videos (the ones on the videos were probably around 1Ah, the macbook's must be close to 9Ah [95WHr, if at 11.6V, that's almost 9Ah]). Imagine what it can do...

Last time i checked the average weight of a PC laptop around 15-16 inches was roughly 6lbs where the hell did this 10 lb number come from.

Although there are some gaming laptops which sport dual vid cards and multiple hard-drives that weigh 10 lbs, they are also usually 17" + laptops so thats to be expected because they are performance driven.

I work at Best Buy and the battery life average is a minimum of 4hours on most Intel core2/i3/i5 computers but a growing number have 5-6 hours. Also, through my experiences with my gf's macbook pro, the thing runs pretty damn hot compared to my 16" Asus G60 with a gtx 360 which i game on often. Her mac book pro once burnt my stomach when she placed it on me after watching a movie

Seriously, I think many people that talk about Windows or bash windows haven't been on windows since xp. Especially with Win 7 the number of improvements over xp and ease of use and intuitive features make it as easy to use as the mac OS. The differences of battery life i think are a joke. Seriously unless your doing work out in the middle of a field and cant plug you laptop into the wall then battery life is a very small issue for most. And for the people who say they like the weight of the MBP.... have you even seen the new PC laptops, the above mentioned are Higher-end PC latops that have upgraded vid cards that require thicker designs because of the larger heat sinks and fans on those cards.... there is a 13" sony i3 with a gt 330 that weighs the same as the 13" mbp but costs 1/2 as much and the screen is great on it.... I dont get all the hype about Macs i use both regularly and i still like my pc more because of the much larger hardware and software support.... Oooops sorry i wasnt supposed to mention software support since we are talking about mac's.... Anyone need CAD for work.... no Mac version i wonder why?

I agree that there are lots of laptops(Even aside from this 5 models)that perform better than MBP's,however the new MPB's have a better battery life(in OSX) but in terms of price/performance ratio, there are lots of better options

Price/performance ratio is what keeps me from buying.

If i can buy a Laptop that's over one thousand dollars cheaper and performs much higher then Apples higher-priced models, then i'm going to get the cheaper alternative.

........ a shiny, slim case - I Want Performance!
