I don't agree.

Buying a car is very subjective. Pricing is very subjective. Some people will buy a **** car because they like the styling. While others might stick with a certain company because of an employee discount (given to the families of employees) or for a single feature like Onstar or Sync.

CPUs are a funny market. The majority of people don't care what is inside the PC as long as it turns on and does whatever it is they want it to do. HOWEVER, this is where the CPU market is different, the pricing of CPUs is done objectively based off of benchmarks, thus why AMD can't charge more than ~185 USD for its best desktop part.

So AMD can try until they are blue in the face, but to profit they need effort to translate into results.

The auto market is different. No matter how **** or how good they are, people like my parents sometimes are faithful to a company such as GM, Ford, etc... Pricing is subjective, and there are many different factors that add value.

The PC market has only a few factors that relate to value with performance being the most important one in the desktop side. Yes, performance can be measured using many different benchmarks, but in the end, you can typically come to a conclusion that one CPU is better\same\worse as another. The CPU companies do this themselves with their pricing.

^Well I see your point.

I think that having just 2 CPU and GPU companies makes it easier really. Imagine if we had 10 different CPU companies and all the differences and we may have x86, IA-64 and the markets would split. Bleh.

I still think AMD will do fine just will take thm a generation or two after Deneb to catch up or beat Intel because heck they just don't have the money to spend like Intel does.

That would be a nightmare!

Not necessarily. If you don't run proprietary software, the distributor can just simply recompile the code for whatever CPU you are running (for the most part) and you can be on your merry way. Look at Debian Linux, for example. They officially support DEC Alpha, x86_64, ARM, HP PA-RISC, x86, Itanium, big-endian MIPS, little-endian MIPS, PowerPC, SPARC64, and IBM s390. That's not just the OS but bunches of the programs that run on the OS. If you encounter a third-party program that is not one of the 10,000-20,000 packaged by Debian available to install via the package manager, you can almost always run an install script to compile the open-source code for your CPU and it will run just fine.

Now take Microsoft for another example. They have desktop OSes for x86 and x86_64 and a server variant for those two plus Itanium. Almost all of the programs they sell are x86- only a few are x86_64 and I don't think I've seen anything besides Exchange Server and SQL Server for Itanium. Almost all third-party programs are x86 as well but they are proprietary and you cannot simply compile them to suit your computer.

^yea this was a fun one. I disproved the fake screenchot.

And kassenz, that was from the Agena based Phenoms hence the 65nm tech that was pulled a few weeks before release.

And no there still will not be a 4GHz stock Phenom FX. Only ones I have heard about are the 3GHz FX Phenoms that MAY be coming out yet MAY not.

sigh.. my best friend has the 6000. good cpu but my e8400 handily smacks it around. GHz doesnt mean a whole lot. he had a clear advantage in the fact he bought in cheaper than i did but i think he got took given the performance despairity. brand loyalty is the height of stupidity in technology purchases. the best never stays the best for long.

By the way, the Newegg link is very likely a fake one. 65 nm for 4.0Ghz with VID at 1.3V? Not to mention Newegg's picture of "Image Coming Soon" is incorrect.

EDIT: Its actually HTT @ 4.0Ghz. So actual clockspeed will probably be around 3.0Ghz.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220389 <- that's how its supposed to be.

So...hacking?

I read the the new AMD 45nm CPU's are shipping now, and should be arriving at Newegg next week. They will be on sale Thanksgiving.

Im not as much a fanboy, I just have only read about, and bought AMD's. Intels confused me with all the market-flooding Celerons, xeons, Pentium, core 2 duo name stuff. Intel doen't need my support, because they have over >70% of the worlds computer supply. To me, AMD's seem like the underdogs. Usually an acceptible amount less performance, but priced less than the Intel equivilent.

Actually, I think my first AMD was the 386SX (16mhz!). Sixth grade. It was a Used already outdated Compac. I bought the first nVidia Voodoo 3dFX in it. Played crappy 2d games. Waited hours for nude photos to download off the BBS. I've been waiting ALONG time to replace this picky DFI Motherboard, 1gig Ram, and retire this 3700+ single core. Does a good job for me, even this 3 year old 3700+ still works fine and doesn't feel that slow yet in the old games I play like CS:S and BF2/2142 (& mods). Last December 2007 I was planning on buying a 9600, but I read alot of bad press and backed out. The 9850 seems like a nice CPU, and the 9950 seems like the same chip, new name. I was going to finally buy one, but with Deneb finally coming out, its worth waiting to see how much of an improvement it is. I'm hoping the new 45nm stuff will solve some of the heat and wattage issues, and make the perfect mid-tier daily setup. Wouldn't you be interested in reading my first post on how the Deneb overclocks?

I'm betting Deneb is fast, but I don't need it to be $1500 qx9770 stupid fast. Always been a good value for medium level performance, but a big jump from whatever CPU it replaces. Don't you think Deneb is a worthy chip to replace my SanDiego? So, yeah, a Deneb does get me excited. Me and everyone reading this thread. Did you see the name of it?

Oh, really?! So, could you show me the price comparison between a model from AMD and one - equally clocked - from Intel?

So much is only in the eyes of the buyer nowadays...

That's interesting. AMD's FX-82 is actually a Deneb part according to most online sources. Yet from Newegg's data it is actually a Barcelona part.

So which is it? :pt1cable:

Deneb's arriving next week at newegg? I thought they delayed the launch again. I only figured it must be true the launch was delayed since I have seen nothing in numbers from review sites.

No there still are no 4GHz stock FX-82 parts. The rumor, and is still just a rumor yet to be confirmed by AMD, is that there may be a 3GHz stock Phenom FX. But no QuadFX again. In fact after AM3 AMD plans a new socket, mainly for its server apps to begin and its 6 core quad channel DDR3 chips, called SG34. But thats still a ways away.

As stated, Shanghai goes out this month. Deneb, the desktop version, goes out in Q1 2009 with no set date yet. I have heard the NDAs are up in January which means that possibly late January/early Feburary but no confirm yet.

There aren't that many. There are 2 parts. Server and Desktop (and mobile if you are into that sort of thing), just like AMD. Server is Xeon only just like AMDs Barcelona. Desktop you have 3 sets. Celeron, ultra low, Pentium Dual Core, mid range, and Core 2 Duo/Quad, mid to high range. AMD has Sempron, low range, their mid end is the Athlon X2 and their high end is Phenom X4/X3 and soon X2. So in all they have the same amount with naming. You just don't see that.

Their pricing is actually on par with what you get. Not really less. And you can't believe anyone who talks about pricing. One guy on Youtube posted a suggestion for the Phenom 9950BE and stated that better or equal performance from Intel was 2-3x the price. Yet the Q6600 has been about the same price and offers pretty much the same performance with a 200MHz disadvantage.

I hear they're growing them in Nigeria. All you have to do is respond to the next Nigerian e-mail you receive and ask about their special money tree investment offer. 😉
