Are the power wattage problems from the 480's launch fixed? I'm on the fence about picking up an MSI RX 480 8GB right now at microcenter for $240 since I have no hopes of seeing the 1070 for under $400 any time soon and I need to replace my HD 6950 for Battlefield come October. I figure an RX 480 will go well with my i5 6600K

Yer...I noticed that yesterday. Sorta gives me a little hope...but don't think I can hold out for another 2-3+ weeks waiting for a $200 custom 480. Already missed NewEggs $25 off 200 paypal promo waiting for it...now there's a $15 off if u checkout with visa. I'm gonna say screw it...I've suffered long enuff with my 'back up' card...a 512MB 4850. (Oddly enuff, I also paid $200 for it back in 2008!). Gonna use the $15 off and grab a Sapphire Nitro 470 for $195...10-12% difference ain't gonna kill me...3 more weeks with this 4850 might...lol

Edit:
I just can't win...

After all the frustration, aggravation and indecision I finally decide to say screw it and pull the trigger...and the Nitro is out of stock again at NewEgg...and I JUST checked it while writing this post! Now watch me get it and the 480s pop up...lol

It was fixed less than a week after the launch. It was just an issue in the driver that told the board to pull more from the slot than it should have. They changed it so now it pulls some from the slot and the majority from the 6-pin.

Is that an aftermarket MSI board or a MSI reference board? I ask because that is the MSRP for that card and it seems everywhere else is gouging.

Yes, $240 is the MSRP and it is the reference model. That's actually the right price considering the performance. I see on Newegg, there are a couple reference models on there for $399, which is just retarded.

You gotta love Microcenter... It's the only thing that I *really* miss from my visit to the US, haha.

Well, I can't complain here in the UK though. Most online e-retailers have the cards near MSRP, so it's not *that* bad.

Cheers!

Some signs of prices trending downward here in Holland - the the RX 480 Nitro+ 4GB has dropped by 20 euros and is actually cheaper than the cheapest reference 4GB. Delivery time estimated as 10-12 days however.

Stick a fork in me, I'm done. Waited all I care to wait for custom 480s to come available...and I seriously doubt that any custom cooled 480s will come in at $199 and no way I'm going with a 6 pin and crap cooler reference card...so I just pulled the trigger on a Nitro 470...fuggit...lol

Can you give us your subjective impressions of the card? :)

Cheers!

Absolutely...but it'll be monday before it arrives.

Sure as sht...now that I've orderd, NewEgg had a few custom 480s in stock for a brief second. The 480 Nitro 4gb is priced at $230 and the 8gb is at $280 (ouch). The 8gb may come down a little but I'd bet the farm that the 4gb stays at $230. Pretty sure the only $199 cards will be ref models.

Sapphire 8gb ref cards are in stock for $250 fwiw

edit... Just noticed...prices on 970s, 960s, 950, 380 and 380X are dropping like a rock...mostly thru rebates. RX 400 series availability is fixin' to take off I bet.

anyone get their Nitro+ 480 4GBs yet? I'm quite interested in them still. haha, if they are even a minor step up from a gtx 970 i end up selling the 970 i just got for a bit less than that $230 price tag. all depends on prices and performance, lol

4GB Nitro 480 ist an excellent card, if you can get it that is. Beats the 970 in all but nVidia games (EG.:Tomb Raider). Dunno it has enough edge to justify an upgrade from the 970, tbh.

The RX480 is a side-grade when compared to a 970 and even 980 to some extent (downgrade, but...).

If you want to "forward think", then the RX480 triumph the 970 and 980 for DX12/Vulkan that relies on any ASync implementation, but that would be the only way to justify the RX480 over either the 970 and 980. Everything else is a side-grade at best.

Like I said before, anyone that already has a R9 290-range class card and up, then they shouldn't consider the RX480, unless they want the lower power consumption.

And if you already have a 970, why not go for the 1060 instead?

Cheers!

No point going for a 1060 over a 970 or 480. 1060 is barely any faster and costs more. I don't see an issue with a 970 for the time being, I'd sit tight for another year. AMD Vega coming out (should be a decent step up for their high end) and nVidia Volta (first nVidia gpu with hardware Async so I think a better upgrade than Pascal, which is essentially Maxwell but overclocked and with a few, totally unproven at this point, VR related features added on).

I agree, after all that advice to not upgrade from a 970 or 980 to an RX 480 because its not really an upgrade, then saying "why not get a 1060" doesn't make sense at all. It is NOT any faster than any of them (RX 480 included).

The truth is if you have a 970 or 980 right now, unless you're going 1070+ or waiting for Vega there is no reason to upgrade your GPU with any of the newest offerings.

Let me give a bit more context of why a 1060 instead of an RX480 coming from a 970:

You keep your same "ecosystem" of stuff around the nVidia drivers and don't suffer any "shocks" when you can't enable some stuff in games. Like it or not, the game experience between AMD and nVidia is different. I like AMD's more, since it's less bloated (you can opt out of installing the Gaming Evolved client and pretty much install CCC and the drivers alone), but you do miss out on stuff games implement from GameWorks. Important or not, is another topic and obviously the millage may vary a lot.

I didn't say explicitly it is still a side-grade and I should have, but I say it now: it's a side-grade to go into a 1060 from the 970/980 and you should only care if you want the reduced power consumption and/or new features touted in the Pascal siblings.

Cheers!

It came early...ordered wed afternoon, it got here fri at 11am via the '4-7 day eggsaver' shipping...nice job NewEgg!

First impression? Well packaged and protected. Feels very solid...is heavier than it looks. Build quality appears to be top notch...typical of Sapphire cards imo.
Atm I'm experiencing a glitch with my system...it's acting like there's a grounding issue with the mobo or psu maybe. Tho I don't think it'd hurt anything, I think I'm going to wait on installation til I trace and fix the issue. All my front panel stuff is cutting in and out (usb ports, headphone jack, lighting dimmer) and the other day I didn't have a network connection when I booted up... when I wiggled/pushed in on the network cable plug I lost video signal to my monitor (!) and had to reboot...so something isn't right. My luck sux...

The reference models, yes. Not the partner cards.

$344...youch...u musta been REALLY sick of waiting. Ofc prices in AUS run higher to begin with.

Be interesting to see your SLI benches...assuming that's your intention.

I bought the Sapphire RX470 Nitro, I too was tired of waiting and scanning for the RX480 that was not reference. I had a promo/rebait card that took off a bit over 20 bucks for it, ending up paying 190 ish with 3 day shipping.

I honestly do not see these cards reaching down to the MSRP levels.

The RX470 nitro+ that I bought is a upgrade to my R9 280X which went out on me a week ago.

Maybe in the future I'll buy a RX 480 if they really do get <200 bucks. But I can't see that happening for at least a year Which just happens to be when the RX490 may come out, early 2017.

I've seen some reports saying that Vega might make it by the end of this year, which would be great if AMD can make it for the Christmas season, they could use the sales boost.
