Anyone have a Q9650 with a newer gen gfx card?

doesn't make a difference. I game on a q9550 and use one or 2 6950 2gig cards. They are held back by the processor. So will the newer cards. Okay to purchase a "bigger and newer" card to bring to your next build but you won't see it's potential until you upgrade.

Well, I had a 5870 that I sold to purchase a new vid card. At the moment I'm running two 3870's in Crossfire.
I have the Q9650 @ 4.02 stock volts, can push it to 4.25 with 1.375 volts. I did a while back ago compare my 5870's BF3 results to an i7-2600k OC'd to 4.7 and I was only 4 fps lower with the same video card.
I'm caught between the 7970 and the 670. Not sure which will do the best, although I'm used to ATI CCC + Afterburner. Last nVidia was a GT 7950.

I overclock to 4.4 at times, ( although if I Prime95 it, one of the cores crashes) but plays games fine without the cores crashing, but 4.25 is Prime95 stable ) we shall see though! Pretty excited, but being stationed overseas, takes FOREVER to get things in the mail, so now just a waiting game!

I really want to know how this performs as I have the same processor and I am considering the 670 but I might also need a 1080p monitor!

I can play with all games in the market without problems...
In a single gpu configuration, both q9550 and q9650 have enough juice to push graphic card to the limit when overclocked around 4.0ghz using high resolution like 1920x1080.
Don't use sli o x-fire with core 2 quad because both were heavily cpu limited.

I was wondering the same thing as well, last week I got a GTX 670 (which is great btw) to pair with my Q9650. I imagine it bottlenecks the card in certain games.
I wish I could OC both the cpu and gpu but I'm running on a 500w psu so I'm already way close to the psu's limit.
I love that little cpu...I don't want to upgrade

So you are running at 3.0ghz or what speed and are your games running at at least 60fps or is below this regularly (bf3, crysis or any games you play) and do you think 3d gaming at 120hz would make sense with your set up because I am considering 3d with my q9650 @ 3.0ghz paired with a single gtx 670 but I not sure if it would work well but I am like you I love that little cpu...I don't want to upgrade too!

OK,
So I got the card ( B.E.A.utiful ). SOOO amazed how quiet it is. 85% is max fan, and that sounds like my old 5870 @ 35%. Can't even hear it @ 60% and below.
Now for the verdict. Running Crysis 2, my FPS went up ALOT ( cannot seem to get Adrenaline bench to work atm ) So just going off of fraps. I do notice FPS drop though and I'm guessing it's the Q9650. I OC'd it to 4.2 and still get the FPS drop.
BF3. Although I'm hitting well above 60 FPS @ 1980x1200 with Ultra and 4X MSAA, I get as low as 35 FPS in 64 player maps, even dropping MSAA I seen dips in Metro in the 50's.
Sad to say, I think the ol' Q9650 has to be put down, although like asinausk, I do not nessisarily want to give up my quad, looks like to get rid of those low dips, I need some processing power.
Anyone know a good way of benching BF3 so I can post some numbers?

Lol...I wasn't watching this thread, so my reply is way late.
I'm running at stock speeds, my mobo (G41) can't handle overclocking a quad. The GTX 670 performs very well in games, I don't play BF3, but in BFBC2 it stays around 60-80fps at max settings at 1080p, it rarely gets down to 50 in a full sever. When it does it stays there only briefly.
The performance is remarkably similar to benchmarks found on Tom's and Anandtech...I'm not sure it's very CPU bottlenecked. Remember, these drivers are very immature, later drivers will yield greater performance...
Sure the Q9650 is getting old, but not THAT old...I'm going to stick with it a while longer because I love it... and because I'm broke.

Thanks! Cool good news to hear! Which G41 mobo because I have a e8400 I might use in a 2nd system and I might have to buy the same chipset no options a re really available!

I have an asrock g41m-gs. I just got an e8400 off ebay for $70 to complete another system I have laying around (hopefully I'll be able to sell it). I still need to get a mobo for it though, I'm planning on getting this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138183
I was looking at used P45s on ebay earlier today, but for MATX G41 is really the only practical choice.

I was also looking at a few board also and that Biostar seem to be on of the best available (based on reviews) right now, but it does not have 10/100/1000Mbps which I believe I need for lan gaming so I am looking at these three alternative I am leaning toward the MSI & GIGIABYTE because I have not had good experiences with ASUS

Ouch, only 10/100 didn't catch that. I'd go for the gigabyte. In fact, I'm gonna order that one to use as my main board and put my old one in the new build. The SATA port layout on the gigabyte is nice...unlike my current one.
EDIT. nvm, ddr3...ffffuuuuuuu.
