I heard if someone posts a picture of you holding an Iphone, and you are A: Fat, B: Ugly, C: Smoking, or D: eating Taco Bell, that Apple will remote disable the phone; as doing any of the above tarnishes the brand.

Wow, spoiled lil bitches arent they? lol Second hand smoke is inhaling and breathing smoke from a smokers. Not even smelling a smoker's clothes that have absirbed the scent isnt second hand smoking. Who the hell explains to those people those things? are they fully dumb? I mean even uneducated ppl are smart enough to know what a second hand smoke is.

And again, ive never seen in a waranty mentioning anything about smoking in general. Specially electronics. The only thing that has to do with it is a damn smoke detector. Wtf is wrong with Apple anymore, I just dont get it.

I was a geek squad agent for about 3 years and i can say that smoking constantly around a pc will have negative effects on it. Not sure about the whole bio hazard issue but it is pretty disgusting to crack open a case that somebody has been chain smoking next to.

LOL!

They would freak if they saw my iMac.
Used to be white, but after six years of abuse in a smoking environment and no cleaning, it turned yellow.
It's so full of dust and debris, it's a wonder the fans haven't seized.
Probably squirrels living in it.

Don't blame Apple, blame the smoking laws.
Absurd laws.
Politically correct Laws.
Hypocritical laws.

it is illegal for an employer to expose an employee to the dangers of tobacco smoke, in any form, workplace health and safety say so.
Apple is just following orders laid down by the law.

When I worked as an engineer at a hospital, there was a list of almost 300 dangerous chemicals and substances that the engineers came in contact with, had access to, or exposure to while at work.

That was okay, but we weren't allowed to smoke anywhere on the property.
That would be dangerous to hospital staff and patients.

I'm usually critical about Apple, but in this case I agree on their decision. The health of the employees must come before service. I'm quite sure that the warranty contract states that it covers problems during normal usage. As smokers amount to less than 20% of the US population I would say smoking near the computer isn't normal usage.

As far as I can read, from some of the tech guys, in this thread Apple tech service has just become a lot more appealing, if you want to avoid smokers PCs.

In short good job Apple!

I understand this policy. Back when I was going to school I worked at compusa and we had computers come in from smokers and they would be so coated in nicotine on the inside that if you didn't wear latex gloves when working on them you would get physically ill. Now this wasn't every smokers computer but the bad ones were definitely a health hazard.

[citation][nom]o0RaidR0o[/nom]Where are all the Mac fanboy's now?[/citation]
I like Macs, actually it's OS X I love but this is wrong. I hope Apple gets their snobby asses sued off for this.

Having been a service technician myself for many years, I have had the opportunity to be placed in the same position as the Apple techs. I have also refused to work on computers that have belonged to smokers. The coating on the inside of the computer is indeed hazardous and I am not willing to risk my health for their bad habits.

I bought a pc case off a friend who claimed he didn't smoke in his house.Bullcrap to that I say since it took me hours to clean that beloved patriot off with gloves.Nasty is an understatement.Would never touch a smokers PC again. But if your a smoker I can understand why you don't think it's a big deal to not to want to touch it.Your used to it.

Ah, the fruits of political correctness. We should have stopped these people when they first started their campaign of intolerance. Now it's too late and we'll see much more of this. The governments going to take over health care and we smokers will be forced to pay to the hilt and then be denied coverage due to smoking. And notice how if somebody don't smoke they have zero compassion for others rights. Don't worry, they're coming for you too. EX: trans fat. Global Warming, gay marriage, on and on...

They probably won't fix a beer drinkers computer either. Wine would be fine though. Not that any beer drinkers would ever think of buying a POS Mac though... elitist snobs.

LOL ! stupid as hell!

it's funny when you compare this news with this one "Report: 1 Million Xbox Users Banned for Piracy" and then compare the comments you guys posted on both issues!

Microsoft is evil, bad, M$, microsuxx (and many more "creative and funny" names!!!) because it has banned some users for "PIRACY"!! and then it is totally ok for Apple to do the same thing because someone is a smoker!!

just WOW!!!

[citation][nom]JTWrenn[/nom]You are comparing smoke, to the smell of smoke...not the same thing[/citation]

You wouldn't have to tell them. I ALWAYS DID. They asked what caused all the damage inside the PC - and I always told them the truth.

Apple has always been very borish about itself, since the days of it's formation. This is one of the main reasons I refuses to buy a SINGLE Apple product. Each sale will only boost Apple's borishness.

So what's next? "Apple refuses to fix a customer's computer after they found porn movies in the harddisk and believes that (stale) biohazard wastes left after a porn session is hazardous to the health and well-being of it's staff ...." LOL!!!!

[citation][nom]jellico[/nom]I'll tell you what... if I ever learn of a local tech or shop that has the attitude that you or mgilbert or techguy911 have, I will contact all fo their customers and let them know exactly how they feel about their clients who smoke. I will also include my own card along with a note letting them know that their money is always good here, and their business will ALWAYS be appreciated.[/citation]

Jellico, you wouldn't have to tell them. I always told them exactly what damaged their computer. I had a few computers that were totaled because the fans all quit, and the system overheated.

If you are a smoker, I know you don't understand how putrid your electronic equipment smells inside. And you probably don't know that your clothes, skin, and hair are coated in tar and nicotine - and that a nonsmoker can smell you from ten paces. Smokers, you, your car, and your home are putrid - you stink, literally.

As a PC tech several years ago I worked on a computer that was so coated in tar, nicotine and dust that it was next to impossible to "clean" the system. The exterior case had gone from beige to brown... It was really gross, had it been "warranty" work pretty sure the manufacturer would have refused to service it. Apple is just getting flak for it because it is Apple, but based on what I have seen as a "worst case" scenario, I cannot blame the tech for refusing service...

[citation][nom]joetheplumber[/nom] And notice how if somebody don't smoke they have zero compassion for others rights. [/citation]

LOL, yeah, I love it when I walk by some 300 lb. fat phuk and they turn up their nose at my vile cigarette. Go scarf down another double whopper, chubby. You'll be dead long before me!

[citation][nom]jellico[/nom]You're not a very good tech, apparently. Probably explains why you USED to own a computer store.Yes, it's unpleasant, but no more so than people who live in extremely dusty homes. You're being paid to do a job, so you do it. Fans fail, period. You buy them in bulk and replace them as needed, billing the customer for the part(s). You take the open computer outside and blow everything out with canned air. What doesn't come off, with canned air, you use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment (soft bristles only). Gunk on the contacts? You can clean this off with isopropyl alcohol and Q-tips, the same way you clean off old heat-sink compound from a CPU (talk about sticky goop!). You should know all of this.If you don't like smokers or smoking (and I don't blame you, neither do I), then just say so. But the stuff you and techguy911 are talking about is stuff that hasn't been an issue since the early days of the PC revolution.[/citation]

My business was very successful. I grossed over $400,000 a year during my best years - and I did it on my own - no employees. I got tired of the hours, and the fact that I had no health insurance. My situation changed and I moved out of state, and rejoined the public sector as a technician for the National Library Service's Talking Books program for the deaf and handicapped. I manage the repair and distribution of Talking Book players for the entire state of Kentucky. We have over 5,000 patrons.

I always repaired smokers' computers, but I told them the truth about what destroyed the components in their computer, and I charged accordingly. However, if I worked for someone else, I'd refuse to do it. And, no, you can't clean all the contacts - there are several thousand, and the power supplies are usually so full of crud that they have to be replaced. Nicotine damage to contacts is permanent. It eats the coating off the metal! You cannot do a 100% repair on a smoker's computer. A badly damaged one can be made to run, but it will never be reliable.

I don't like smokers, and don't befriend or associate with them in any way. I can't stand the stink in their clothes and hair. Smoking is nothing but a legal drug addiction, and it kills more people every year than all other drugs and alcohol combined. Smokers are drug addicts - pure and simple, and I have no use for them.

Worked in a break/fix shop for a few years and always hated working on smokers' PCs. If you don't smoke the smell is almost choking and you can't get it out, the tar from the smoke mixes with dust in the case and just man what a mess. But I took a page from the Apple play book and applied a "smokers/idiot/jerk/pet pissed in or on the case/pervert spooged on or in the case-tax" (which ever the situation called for) usually around an extra hour of labor for the extra cleaning or refraining from smacking them in the case of the jerk and idiot taxes.

I don't know if having the "smoke" odor in your face will give you cancer, but it makes for a crappy day at the office.

The fact that nicotine is on the OSHA list just means that employees have to follow proper safety procedure, which in this case is probably a simple dust mask. How much is a 100 count box of those? How much is an iMac? Yeah.

Unless it's an extreme circumstance, by the time smoke has had an opportunity to "ruin" a computer, it should be the end of an upgrade cycle anyway.

Yes, smoke can damage a computer and can potentially ruin it faster than in a non-smoking environment. However, with regular care and cleaning, it is not going to be much worse for wear by the end of a computer's average lifecycle.

My parents last computer, I had built for them 8 or so years ago (AMD AthlonXP 1800+). They are very heavy smokers, and the computer didn't give them a single problem, nor did any of the parts (besides the fans) ever need to be replaced. It was not cleaned out on a regular basis either, unless I was able to get some time in to do some general maintenance.

Yeah, the parts seemed to sometimes be a bit extra gunky, but I'd also serviced PCs which were just as gunky and not in a house with smokers. Moisture in the air can easily make dust "sticky" and "gooey", making it very hard to remove it from electronics (and living in Michigan, let me tell you our nasty humidity in the summer easily makes that happen). Canned air can only get you so far, until you have to take a cue-tip or another non-abrasive tool to loosen the gunk up, then either use dust-off or an electronics vacuum.

Yeah, smokers have potential to ruin their computers faster, but then again, so do people who never clean the damn things out. I've run into just as many non-smokers who take terrible care of their computers, that once you open it, you'd swear the PC was in the house with a chain-smoker, only that it doesn't have that smell. They keep their computers in poorly ventilated environments, running the computer in a non-air conditioned room with the temperature outside in the 90s and 100% humidity. That is every bit as bad as a person who smokes around their computer, and actually has far greater potential to cause harm to the computer.

The only part which actually bothers me is the smell, but then again, if you clean it out at least once a month, that smell has a lot less chance to build up. However, it will probably still be a bit noticeable.
