[citation][nom]enewmen[/nom]Can someone explain what Apple will use to replace the optical disks? USB drives?I also don't like them, but there needs to be some good offline way to re-install the OS and some apps.[/citation]

Sure, you will have to bring your laptp to an apple store, as always 😀.

[citation][nom]wemakeourfuture[/nom]Need my optical. No better way to share large amounts of pictures and home videos with other family and friends.Plus, my DVD / Blu-Ray provides great archiving, have had way too many backup harddrives fail on me to trust them without some form of redundancy.[/citation]

Why don't just buy a cheap 16Gb USB key? Nearly every device has a USB input these days so it doesn't have to used with just a computer.

Thanks for explaining. This is why I will never have a Mac.

With the only "true leader" crApple ever knew gone, crApple is finding its way back to ignominy. The other day, I heard a tech analyst say that crApple has not come up with anything truly innovative in the recent years, and as such it was becoming a commodity company - again. It's stock has dropped 100 points in the past few months.

Things like this, where they attempt to veil a move to further monopolize the market in an unfounded statement of technological obsolescence, exemplify the fact that they are now like a ship adrift with no pilot and no navigation system. crApple is floundering, and this is yet another sign of their lack of direction. The sooner this ship sinks, the better - IMO.

The only place that the lawsuit with Samsung has gotten them is in a position where they are daring Samsung to do better. If I were at the helm of crApple, I would be very worried about that. Samsung will, IMHO, end up doing far better than crApple without these strong-arm tactics to control the Samsung users.

Optical Drives are handy for multiple reasons people left above. They should always be a standard in any device. USB is handy for boot sticks, or whatever. But in the end, its nice to load a old movie without the bullshit.

The combo bluray burner/dvd burner should be available to everyone, Period. Until there is a time where its not longer needed.

If they are worried about copyright stuff, Well people can just as easily do that on a stick, or a card, or a external HDD for that matter.

They just want more control to force people to buy certain components and force people to go see apple genius' to fix everything that fails. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out....More money in repairs equals more money to the company. Same as a car.

Were being controlled to force the power user to bring it in.... Its ridiculous. (glad i don't own one)

1. Remove Optical Drive from laptop
2. Raiseprice of laptop asit is now thinner due to lack of optical drive
3. Sell external optical drive (bonus points if you can force the consumer to spend more on an obscure interface like thunderbolt)

They can be handy, but in most cases, their handiness is tied to the fact that you may be dealing with technology from an era before the prevalence of flash memory in the 1st place.

And as far as 'bs' in movie watching: I have never had more trouble just watching a movie than when using a bleeping DVD player. They players are junk. The disks are junk. They can't handle even the smallest spackle of dust before they fail.

I wish they had just made VHS more compact, as the only thing that went wrong with those were getting warn out or getting tangled. If neither happened, the movie PLAYED.

Flash memory and Cloud movies are the only real option. Optical media can go the way of the DODO...

Because a 16GB is about $12. A single-layer blu-ray disc, holds 25GB, and costs about $1.50.
Not only does the disc have more storage space, it is also cheaper, and you don't have to worry about getting the disc back like you do the USB drive.
I think that by now it is safe to say that the majority of people have access to a blu-ray reader somehow. Whether it's a ps3, their computer, or a separate unit for their media center.

And even if a family member doesn't have a blu-ray capable ready, give them one or more DVDs. Which again, are really cheap.

:sarcastic: Soap, water, dry towel, or clean hands in the first place.

USB Hard drive....

You cant do this, you cant do that. Thats what a windows user would say about apple devices. Apple users would say why do you want to do this and why do you want to do that?
People have different uses for their devices. Windows/popular linux distro's will be more popular due to their flexibility/different uses. Apple laptops can do stuff "outside" the box, but isnt well supported.
Apple isnt here to be flexible, its here to make money. And this is a more effective way of doing it, and i admire the way they lock people into their demographic. Windows is going the same route, but Microsoft doesnt make its own desktops or laptops, and hardware is managed by the user, and it wont void your warranty to replace something yourself (unless you buy from a supplier). Theres many different paths you can go down when it comes to using Computers. Apple are simplifying things, and although i dont agree with what they are doing, it is a way that works for people who are dependent on a laptop or desktop, rather than being users of those devices. Apple machines are like glasses without any lenses, its fashion. And theres a lot of people out there who like that sort of thing.

Personally I just don't like companies deciding what I need. Sitting in front of my PC setup's 40" 200hz HD led screen knowing I can swap out my graphics card for a newer one any time and having unlimited options with storage and memory as well as CPU manufacturer makes me realise that I could never go for something like this. One size does not fit all.

I'm sorry, but the 'your holding it wrong' thing is kind of moot when a brand new DVD out of the shrinkwrap fails on multiple DVD drives... And it doesn't just happen once...

Optical media is flaky. Flash is not. HDD is even a better option. Optical media is where good data goes to die.

[citation][nom]captainblacko[/nom]should have read the full comment before posting haha.i removed my CD/DVD drive 2 years ago. Only get my games from Steam and Origin these days.[/citation]

Good luck when Steam or Origin Fails due to some hack or server error...

Is their marketing campaign based off of insulting and putting down the competition now? I have heard nothing but negative stuff from apple.

[citation][nom]Cats_Paw[/nom]Good luck when Steam or Origin Fails due to some hack or server error...[/citation]

you have the same risk with a CD. if it gets damaged you wont be able to use.

HDD are not the better option. I have CDr from 17 years ago that work just fine, I have no harddrives that have lasted me that long without errors, most have died on me. I'm lucky I backup stuff on a write-protected media that is also much, much cheaper than flash drives. You can make a flash write once, then write protect, still more expensive without more life expectancy.

Before you (Apple) suggest that I use itunes to buy all my movies, how about you fix your software. Having my secondary display completely blacked out when the movie goes full screen is unacceptable. Itunes sharing is a joke, cuts out after 5 minutes or so ( over wireless or gigabyte ethernet connection). There are probably more issues, but I stopped using the software after these two.

Why should I have to spend more money than just buying the movie? I can just get a disk and keep it for safe keeping, rather than the hassle of downloading it with annoying DRM from Apple that won't work if I ever decided to change to a windows laptop. In fact, I bought a film from iTunes and it wouldn't let me play it on my tv set from my laptop, it would only let me play it on the laptops screen.

[citation][nom]captainblacko[/nom]you have the same risk with a CD. if it gets damaged you wont be able to use.[/citation]
Nope. If i want i can make 10 copies of it. i can have an image on my hdd, a cd and then when one of those fail, do another backup.
In cloud, first of all you dont "own" the software. This means that at any time, those companies, by law, are allowed to take it away from you. All they need is an excuse.

Also, Cds and Dvds can handle a lot of abuse before they break. The ones that dont work fresh out of the box have a defect in manufacturing, and can be exchanged in your local store as long as it is the same one.

The problem with could is that you ARE dependant of them. sure you PC can fail you, but so can while having your games on cloud. However you have no impact on cloud at all.

I find that having a system integrated to the monitor to be holding things back. You know, because if something on the screen goes bad, well, you have to be without your system while it gets fixed.

SERIOUSLY!
Bluray use h.264... and Apple have patent on h.264.

It's BULLSHIT! They want to sell low quality stuff from iTunes and don't pay for Sony Bluray patent.
