An older compaq presario computer with four USB ports in front and 3 in the back. Did a Windows update, all was great. Had an external drive plugged in a back port as well as a wireless logitech mouse in back port. Plugged an external drive into a front port, and the computer froze. Restarted windows, mouse does not work now, and external drive is not seen. There is no "device not recognized", there is simply nothing with any of the USB ports, even after unplugging, restarting and replugging the USB devices. I deleted relevant USB stuff from Device Manager, and Windows saw NEw Hardware on boot and reinstalled all the bits for the USB ports, but still nothing is being seen plugged into any port. A complete Windows install (updates are still underway) but the external drive is still not seen in any USB port, neither is the mouse or even a flash drive.

Is it possible that all front and back USB ports have somehow fried, even though Windows can see the USB ports as New Hardware when it boots?

Probably not. But hopefully you utilize "safely remove Hardware" before removing USB mass storage devices. You might give this a try.
Go to: Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > navigate down to USB Root HUB (all of them) > Right Click > Properties > Power Management Tab > Un check "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

Retry your USB device...It should work now...

Thanks for the feedback. The suggestion did not work but the input is appreciated. I am at the problematic computer as I write, and still neither back or front USB ports see either a flash stick or external drive when plugged into them. The ports are all displayed in Device Manager.

This may fix it.
In device Manager expand the USB Controller.
Right click each hub & scan for new hardware.

After thought also is with an older computer, there may be too many USB devices pulling power from the HUB.

All the Device Manager options have been exhausted already, and even some regediting. Understand, this was not an issue forever, as all devices worked fine on this computer for months and some for years. All that happened was plugging in an 808 #16 camera to the front port, which had been done many times, and then the system froze. After a restart, no more connectivity between USB Plug and Play devices and the computer, though the computer shows all USB ports to be working fine. Even after a complete reinstall of Windows XP, the computer still does not see anything plugged into any USB port, whether it's the front USBs or teh back ones. I am now considering the physical testing of the ports, which will be followed by getting a PCI USB card and installing it, seeing if that works.

Have at it then !
