Notes:
I tried to keep in mind that this competition was about the fastest PC for $3000 and I see a lot of people put in HDD/32GB Ram etc., try not to since its about SPEED ONLY not about SPEED/CONVENIENCE! Also I wasn't sure if the setup would involve O/C but i think I good a good combination if it will be(The tower provided excellent cable management/air circulation). When building the list I wasn't expecting to spent more then an hour and finding the right combination/price, but it took me almost 4 hours :??:

The choices I went with I doubt will get any better. First off the ram I choose is the best atm, but I was aiming for 2133MHz at around Cas 8 Timing but none were available atm or just really hard to find, they are however 1.5V witch I think is critical when O/C by reaching 2400MHz. Second I chose 3x XFire Asus HD6950 since Price/Performance they would beat anything out there and ontop of that they can be unlocked to HD6970 also critical for O/C. Third went with RAID0 Corsair Force 3 SSD which definitely will be noticed up from single SSD. Fourth Case was surprisingly cheaper then what i thought i would pay to get those 3x HD6950 in since each card requires 3 expansion slots each.Lastly the Thermaltake P/S had to keep up with all those power hungry components especially the Video Cards so made sure its got 2x +12V Rails.

Note: Not a lot of storage on this build at all, but speed was the goal, and I honestly don't use more than 150 GB on my personal computer. Also, if I were to actually build this computer I would probably go with a bigger power supply, but that one is pleanty capable to run all this, I just like to be sure I have pleanty of overhead when it comes to that. The HAF 912 is a huge case when all you have in it is the 2.5" drive bay, so I am sure space for components would be no issue at all.
 
 
 
ARGH!
The CPU was in stock at one place and sold out and the vendor no longer showed the price, so I found an alternate vendor. The alternate vendor had the CPU less than 12 hours ago and has sold out, and guess what: no longer shows the price. Newegg has been out of stock when I checked and is now too, but it has the CPU's price.

I don't know if the reviewers got to my post before or after the price disappeared!
 


It doesn't matter if said item is in stock or not. it just needs to have a list price with it.

I went with the fastest processor available for the LGA2011 platform and a solid water cooler for overclocking, 2 gtx580s that should kill a 590 any day of the week, and one of the fastest SSD's available for random reads and writes currently. 16GB of Quad channel RAM at 1666 was selected as nothing currently would be bottlenecked by this, and it gave me more cash to maximize the graphics card solution and processor frequency which would be a more tangible increase in overall system performance.

Thanks. I guess to play it safe I'll have to check sites to see if they still show prices for out-of-stock items. Happily, the Rules and Entry page show the contest goes until December 8 at 9 am EST. (I'm not sure why I thought it ended sooner.)

This build focuses on speed and only speed. The lightning quick Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition, two ASUS GTX 560 Ti in SLI, Corsair 16GB Dominator GTs and a pair of Corsair 60GB Force Series GT set up in RAID 0 ensures that nothing can be quicker, not even Road Runner (and he's fast). The Corsair H100, Arctic Silver and Aceceleros only exists from this machine from burning itself up. I don't know about you, but I like to outrun the competition with sound, powered by an ASUS Xonar DG sound card. All of this hooked up to an ASUS P9X79 Deluxe motherboard, powered by a Corsair Professional 1050W PSU and encased in a Corsair Carbide 400R because there's nothing that can harness this screaming beast.

There's nothing faster than this... maybe except for light... relativity and all that.
