what kind of fan should i run to make this thing icy cool?
Liquid nitrogen.

If you're only going to clock to 1.8 gigs, the stock fan should be fine. If you are going to 11 X 200 you may want a thermalright, any higher and you should probably go to a slk800a.

He said icy cool... ice=0*C, so only liquid nitrogen can give him this kind of cooling. Thermalright only run cool but not ICY cool.
LOL

I was just about to post the same question...

I too have an XP2500+, currently running at 166 mhz and clocking at 1.836 Ghz. Idle temp is 52c and underload, she jumps to 60c... I never saw my old Duron go above 45c so 60c has me shaking in my seat. I know kill temp is like 80+c but I sure don't want to dance on the edge.

I am using the stock HSF that came in the retail package. I can't say I am very impressed with the performance. My case is very well ventilated and my system board temp seldom rises above 30c. I want to get my CPU running as cool as possible without resorting to Liquid Nitrogen, liquid cooling, or placing my system in a fridge.

Can anyone recommend a HSF that is good for keeping the temp down below 50c... Preferably in the $50 CAN range.

I don't know what your prices are like in Canada but the Thermalright SLK-900 that I have keeps my AXP2500+ running at 36 - 38 degrees under full load and overclocked to 2GHz (combined with a 92mm Sunon fan).

I found the stock fan to be very loud on the 2500+ and the 2400+. I was glad when I first saw the fan which looked like the one found on the Taisol HSFs but it is actually a Delta fan hence the noise generated.

I got a stock HSF from a 2400+ took off the delta fan, applied a 60 - 80mm converter and put on a low noise 80mm fan and the chip runs at about 49 degrees under full load.

4.77MHz to 4.0GHz in 10 years. Imagine the space year 2020 :)

I grabbed a Volcano 9 Cool Mod last night. Dropped my core temp in idle down to 40c (at 4800 rpm). It is fairly loud, but the looks and cooling of it make it all worth while. I still have some airflow issues in my case, noting that the case fan beside the processor is not working vary hard and I am getting a bit of stale air around the CPU. I will be getting a new case fan tonight, hopefully I will be able to drop the temp another 2-5c

If noise aint an issue, I'd recommend the Thermaltake Volcano 9.
