HI to all

I need to underclock Athlon XP 1800+ to 1600+. After this underclock do I need to lower the voltage for the procesor to make it run stable??

No, more voltage will <i>always</i> mean <i>more</i> stability - within reason of course.

But more voltage does always mean more heat. So you should try to find the lowest voltage at which the system is 100% stable.

Why do you need to underclock?

I got a free old dfi mother board. i'm building my third pc for home. Need to move my sister from my main pc. Then board only supports 1600+, but the slowest model i can find localy is 1800+. It runs well at 1600+ But i know when you overclock you need to increase the core voltega to make it run more stable. So I thought maybe i need to lower the voltage when underclocking. just dont want to burn that cpu

Well, to be honest I would be suprised if it didn't work at 1800+ speeds. The mobo manual will only have listed the fastest available at the time. They both use the same bus speeds so there should be no need to underclock at all.

I set every thing to auto, flashed the bios. But it still only runs at 1600+. went to a friend who has 2400+. Put it in his motherboard, it runs 1800+.

Thats why i dont like DFI

Does it run at 1566 mhz? That is the normal operating speed of the xp1800.

i think xp1800 is 1533MHz..

You are probably right. Never ran one at stock.

On my old DFI board it runs at 1400 mhz (bios shows as 1600+), on my friends motherboard it runs at 1533 mhz (bios shows as 1800+). on that dfi board every thing is set to auto

Since when local computer shops sell unlocked procesors? When I bought it, it looked normal (no scraches, no that silvery stuf which was shown on thg article "how to unlock athlon XP")

What is the FSB on that board? Either you're running at 14 x 100MHz or 10.5 at 133MHz. A multiplier of 11.5 at 133MHz is needed to run that CPU at stock speed. Either way, it does indeed look like your processor may be unlocked.

Almost all of the Thoroughbred and Barton XP's were factory unlocked (or easily unlockable with the NF2) until a certain point last year. Those articles are for Palominos and older.
