This is one of the best articles I've read on this site

BTW,How exactly is the 5870 not a 295 killer? It bests the 295 in nearly every AA chart and does so while costing about $100 less & consuming MUCH less power (also it consumes the least power under load). Also,it offers you to add another card if you have 700w PSU. While the 295 needs 1000w PSU.

well,
picking a graphics card will be harder in future. We start to check the computing performance and i think this computing performance will vary between different CPUs, Mobos or something. I think i'll miss the times that a graphics card just make graphics :)

ask first for its drivers, yea i know nice card, very e impresive performance but in scores, what about real life, what happened with 4870 x2? it never worked 100% because ATI DRIVER SUCKS. Ati makes the people still buying its products and waiting years for a descent driver, but when you think that finaly comes a good driver, that solve all issues, they launched a new model and you only can cry like a baby. Ati products are like a ferrari without engine, it looks nice but....doeesnt work

A lot of valid points made, and some interesting opinions too. I thought the article was very well made. Compliments to Chris.

I have to say it is exhausting leaving so much negative feedback to whingers that cannot even read the article and so just spout verbal diarrhea. Also the fanboys and flamers. Is this board not choked enough.

I have just read the whole HUGE and detailed article and now to have an honest discussion I have to read 75% crap for another 8 pages of comments.

Now for my 2 cents. AMD comes good on the gpu front again. Nvidia may well come back in several months with a higher performance card MAYBE. But Nvidia recently seem to miss the price points or offer less value. I myself am still running an 8800GT. Because in my opinion that was the best value for the time (damn 4850 came out like a week later, was completely off the radar until I read the review).

I like the feature set as it seems pretty flexible. I am sure those lucky enough to be able to upgrade here and now will get great value from this card. People going on about the Nvidia cards have to ask themselves what is the cost likely to be? This card beats the top dog for less money ON RELEASE. Will nvidia come out and beat their previous best cards for LESS money than the current generation costs? Doubt it.

Lets hope I am wrong.

A Core I7-920 vs Core I7-860 comparison would be nice. I'm pricing out a new system for after the new year and can't decide which CPU to go with. Is the 5870 limited by the x8 PCIE in crossfire?

There is no doubt about which graphics card to get though. I was going with dual GTX 275s, but this would match that for the same price and allow CF for even more performance. At $380, the card is a great value.

Check back next week--I'll have a page of Bloomfield vs. Lynnfield benchmarks to demonstrate that these aren't CPU-bound, even at 2.93 GHz.

i would like to see screenshots from games running at 5000x1200 a full sized screenshot so i can grasp how much info is on screen when i scroll the full thing on my normal monitor

I have to say I am impressed, AMD/ATi have been consistently bringing game to the market, keeping things competitive. This new card looks to keep high performance and price points well balanced. (My pocket book is going to be happy this time round!)

I also have to say, even for its size, they thought about placement of the power connectors. I'd love to see a 90deg elbow system to allow top/bottom connection easier.

Good job ATi. (And look! It plays Crysis!)

What a poor and biased review.
Why did they chose gtx285 for SLI ?!!!??

The GTX295 is better in all aspects and if NVIDIA will support DX11 on it, then that's it.

Why didn't they tested it against a Geforce 2 MX ? ...is, SLI ahaha.
And CrossFire doesn't work on that card, so what are we talking about ? Yes, both of them theoretically beat a gtx295. Cool !!! What about gtx295 in SLI ?

We have a good card that will play the future games, well but till the future games are out, NVIDIA can put DX11 support on their cards. Well, this is competition and BOTH are good, if you ask me. Just that ati is red and nvidia green. now depends on what color you like :)))

i bought 2 nvidia 285's for less than the price of ati's new card. Ebay is a wonderfull thing, they purr along
quite nicely. SLI on these cards scales so so well on the core i7. However, a part of wonders shud i have waited for the 5850?. Cud one best the 285?, and would 2 best my current set up? For less power and noise.
I think the 5950 is the card most people are interested in.

well I just bought an ati card and for some reason, nvidia seems to show things in a better quality. The colors blend better.

With some of the new Nvidia cards there AF is in fact better and would blend textures better. This said, it depends on the card and the driver optimizations. The 5870 has PERFECT AF. so that is sweet.

Also note there are different AA settings on the cards that look better on different games.

This image quality has gone back and forth. There have been some real bad Nv cards and had ATI ones.

Well first of all, what you're saying is making no sense in my book, the 5870(not crossfire) beats a GTX295 in more than a few games, and it's only a single card. I hope you know that the GTX295 is a dual gpu card therefore it would be more biased to review 2x5870 in cf and 2x295 in sli, seeing as if you have 2x295 in sli, that would give you quad sli.

On your GTA IV benchmark, it says very high settings. Were you guys able to actually put all of the graphic settings at maximum? I own GTA IV and would love to be able to put it at max. I've got an 8800 GTX, but am unable to max it out because I don't have enough RAM. Since this card only has 1GB, I wasn't sure if I would be able to have GTA at full graphic settings.

On an 8800GTX i don't think you can put gta iv on max cause i tried it on my 4890 and it stuttered a little bit. With this card, i think you can definitely do it, but i'll be getting my card tomorrow morning so i'll let everyone know how it goes. I'll be testing out these games at high and max settings: Call of Duty 4, Need for Speed Undercover, Need for Speed Shift, Crysis Warheads, Resident Evil 5, FEAR 2, and even Fligh simulator :)

Lol, daddy's money? I'm in college, studying computer science, working to make my own money, i'm getting the 5870 and then another one for black friday, to kick the GTX295's ass.

Well, people, I'm not a brand lover, I'm a designer who sometimes finds time to play a quick game. So, I had both ATI and NVIDIA cards and I can say for sure that Graphics on VNIDIA always look better. Yes, in a game, at the highest details, both move the same (boards of same category), but NVIDIA colors just blend better and it renders more details. So, it happened for me, in the past, to return ATI cards, but never NVIDIA and now I own another ATI card, that's just the same. It moves fast, but it just doesn't show everything NVIDIA shows and that's the truth.
I hate any kind of biased reviews, that only review FPS. Let's review the quality of images and game experience, better, cause a game played on an ATI card, at maximum details, looks like the same game played on NVIDIA at 70% details. So that says something. You want to play fast, or to enjoy the game ? From this facts, I conclude that ATI cuts corners somewhere, in development of their GPU's.
What I say is from my experience, not internet reviews or other crap. I'm not biased, is just what I observed.
So, if i were a hardcore gamer, I'd chose a GTX295 for sure, just for that. The gaming experience is clearly better. AMD should stop cutting corners and details just for the sake of FPS. I'd better play a game on NVIDIA on medium to high details than the same on super high, on ATI, to put it like that. Not that I hate ATI or something, but they just seem to cut some corners offering their clients high fps but not much quality.
Have a nice debate here.

Hey superbad, I guess you never owned a geforce 5 series card. Those had horible video quality compared to there ATI counterparts. This has always gone back and forth(no joke here, many times ATI had better IQ). Nothing along the lines of a 30% difference. It is true that Nvidia's AF on some of its newer cards is better, but the textures them selves should be very same aside of the AF blending.

I have done MANY tests from NV/ATI and in general the image quality is very close.

I agree with you nukemaster, i've owned Nvidia cards from the 5 series then jumped to the 8 series, ati just needs to get on par with their drivers. But i love their gpu's.
