I play ut3 EXCLUSIVELY. I run a 6990 now with a simple w2252 LG (1680x1050). (I really like this TN) I plan to upgrade with 2 more thin bezels soon. Maybe to 5. I really need to see about the bezels thing first. I see zero issues, as I think I can deal with it.

My saph 6990 CANNOT do max everything with UT3. I get artifacts. Now it does play very smooth and awesome, until it gets VERY busy. Especially on big maps. UT3 is VERY fast.

The other games with fancy leaves, and, fancy details, well you can have fun with that. I LOVE fast paced FSP games. UT3 is king. But with an OCed 930 4.2, MSI bg bang, Mushkin @ 1600, Intel SSD, Corsair 1000w, MS win 7 machine, MY HD6990 cannot do it, full everything. Period.

Maybe, with the extra LCDs, especially at other resolutions, I don't know. My machine rocks. Dont get me wrong. Just not at very high settings.

All of my reports from 3Dmark etc report very good results, all around. If anyone has any input as per my setup. Or, Qs, Please, feel free to ask. Input will always be taken with best thoughts. :)

I have a Radeon HD 5830 OC'd to 975 mhz core clock and 1150mhz ram speed, and i get 35+ FPS on ultra settings @ 1680 x 1050 resolution with 4X AA. Indoor stages, such as the tunnel in Metro i get 55+fps

I run an Athlon II overclocked @ 3.8ghz and 8GB Mushkin Blackline DDR3 @ 1576mhz

If you dont believe me you can watch my youtube videos. I have FRAPS set to record at 35fps and when i am recording it stays at 35fps and never drops lower.

I have no idea why everyone keeps saying this game is so taxing on systems, granted i do have a pretty ridiculous overclock going on my graphics card, but from what i am experiencing it seems like i'm getting better results than the 5870's!!!

Oh yeah, I definitely meant to say thank you for the awesome reviews of cards. SUPER job. THANKS! One more thing, I REALLY wanted to go GREEN instead of 6990, but I got a good deal. Green team is very pricey. I also wanted to add to my last post, I just wanted to add one more layer to the drama, with the 6990. I have many cards now, from xfire 4850 to 4870, to my 6990, AND, MANY others I have sold. My fav is the 5870 h2o. Awesomeness,,,but really got into things from the 8800gtx and 7600 crossfire, era. So I have some knowledge. Just my 2 cents folks. Best wishes!

Hi Chris,
Thanks so much for putting the time into this. I was all set to rush out and buy a second 6870 card as a relatively cheap route to allowing me to run BF3 at 2560x1600 on Ultra (minus MSAA). The hassles that you experienced with Crossfire have put me right off. However I'm conscious you were usig hte 11.10 beta 3 driver (the latest available at the time). I notice in AMD's release notes for 11.10 (final release) they state: "Reduces stuttering seen on Dual CPU and Tri CPU core systems." However there is no mention of fundamental problems with Crossfire. I just wondered if you plan to try the full 11.10 driver with Crossfire to see if the crashes are still apparent?
Thanks,
Garry

"Sure, a 6970 might handle 1680x1050. But if you’re rocking a $350 card and gaming on a 17” monitor, it’s time to go shopping!"

I don't know where you've been living between 2006 and 2009, but most 22" lcd displays from that era are 1680x1050 (and up to 19" only 1280x1024) ... and many people who bought those at expensive prices back then might still be holding their breathe, waiting for affordable 3d displays in reasonable sizes before upgrading. However, their socket 939 or 775 rig probably won't still be attached to said old monitors.

So in short - it's very reasonable to expect a number of users still using old/cheap monitors despite having new hardware.

For instance my best friend's got a 580 card and only two 22" old monitors. My parents have a 4890 and a 17" they kept from their old system and I know serveral with 4800 or 5800 series hardware gaming on 720p tv screens.

I play on 1920x1080 ultra settings with lowered/no MSAA. i5 750 and HD5850, getting around 40 fps on average. However, after some 5 minutes of playing I get occasional lagspikes, gradually more frequent until the game becomes practically unplayable until I restart it, after which the problem repeats itself. On High settings I get the same issue, though it takes slightly longer before it starts lagging.
Performance monitor (windows) seems to show that my HDD activity spikes coincide with the lagspikes. Does anyone else have this problem or know a possible solution? I have a SAMSUNG HD502HJ ATA HDD, do I need a faster one?

Updated the story yesterday with info from Nvidia--looks like a couple of weeks for new drivers.

It's possible, Garry, but AMD still hadn't narrowed down the issues with CrossFire by the time 11.10 went live, so I'm not expecting any fixes just yet. The same goes for Nvidia's shadow issue, which will need to be fixed in the next driver build.

Thanks for reading =)

Great article, thanks! This certainly provides food for thought. I hope this game is good for the PC and not another unoptimised Crysis.

To get close to a smooth 60 FPS at 1080p you need a GTX 560 Ti or a HD 6950. Both of these cards sell for about £180 in the UK. I would class them as high-end.

It would've been interesting to see cards such as the GTX 460 or HD 6850 at Medium Quality. Can these mainstream cards get close to 60 FPS at 1080p?

I'm tempted to go for a second hand GTX 470 or HD 5870 instead of being disappointed by a new mainstream card in this game.

Why on earth was the 8500 GT included? On your own hierarchy charts it is so far down it is irrelevant. It would've been interesting to see something like my ageing 8800 GT 512MB instead. Even the 6800 GT I used to have is ranked much higher than the 8500 GT!

Red,
Don't have an 8800GT here. Added the 8500GT because it was the last unique NV model in the collection, and it made an even 15 cards per brand ;-)

@ RedDev
The 8800 is a card with the 4870 IMHO, both very good "old cards", still. The 8800 is Dir X 9.0 I think tho. The 4870 is 9 or 10, not sure. Performance of both was very nice. 512 MB ram is too small, nowadays. My 6990 is 4GB, for example. The 5870 rocks, but sells for a premium at the moment. I considered a second 5870, but price (to me) made it not a good deal. Nothing wrong with a basic 5870 but dir X 10. 2 in Xfire was not the step up bargain I hoped for. It is my fav right now for price to performance ATM but the green team may also have an answer in that price. The 68xx is dir X 11 tho and plays the newest games. I hope I got that all straight. Please, correct me if I am wrong folks.

I immediately decided to just skip this article when the first sentence claims RAGE as "AAA". Right there the reviewer lost every ounce of credibility, and everything he says from that point on is mindless dribble. RAGE was at best a B, with it's horrible graphics problems, crappy, 7 hour story with NO ending. WTF is this guy thinking?

FYI HD5870 is a Dx11 card.

Thank you for this article! I have a GTX 295 and was contemplating upgrading for Battlefield 3. The artifacts mentioned I have so far only noticed in single player so this has really helped me in my decision-making process (to hold off with upgrading for now).

[citation][nom]fausto[/nom]just saying, nobody is buying this game for the campaign. [/citation]

Actually I bought the game specifically for the campaign mode. Why? because online play makes me want to backtrace people's IP and find them and stab them with a dull rusty butter knife.

I loved this article. It's exactly what I was talking about a couple of months ago when I wrote in to ask that you guys bench last gen cards on this gen games in your benchmark charts. Need some correlation between the last generation cards and the newest cards to show why people need to upgrade.

But what this article has shown me is that I really need to upgrade my gts250 after all. I have been able to put it off so far since all the games lately have been designed on consoles and ported to pc (oh this is also on a 28" 16x10 monitor). But with bf3, the new update to the unreal engine (ue 3.5?), and then there's cryengine 3 I need to upgrade soon!

Kepler cant get here fast enough.

Sorry I didn't give my monitor size: 1920x1080

Hello, I was trying to duplicate your test on my computer: i7 930 with 2 HD 5770 in crossfire. I used Fraps for the test.
Using default settings (AUTO) which has Texture quality Ultra, Shadow quality through Terrain Decoration on High, Antialiasing Deferred turned off, Antialiasing post-high, motion blur -on, Anisotropic filter 16X, and HBAO. I get a min fps of 52, max 83 avg 69.4. These seems too high compared to your tests. 1920x1080

A quick note: I can't play the multiplayer at these settings! I normally for the 2 HD5770, i7-530, and 1920X1080 have to reduce everything to low to get good game play.
