Asrock P4VM890. Supposedly the first socket 478 (desktop P4/celeron) mobo to use PCI express (although I believe I've seen at least one before). Picked up the link off OCworkbench, which was just posted on January 25th 2007. Is this product even new? The post at OCworkbench sure makes it sound like it's new (it's posted under News/Headlines). It's like I stumbled into a time warp here. I don't know what to think of it. A froogle search listed no current E-tailers carrying this board, but I did find a couple sites carrying BIOSes for it. 8O WTF is this? Old or new? If I could find one, I might buy one.

Yeah, there's a HUGE market for a board like this. Couldn't resist, does seem to be a time warp though. Why anyone would buy a 478 after PCIe came out (775 was available by then) is a mystery to me.

LGA775 wasn't exactly an upgrade when it first came out. It was..to s478, as AM2 is to s939(pretty much). LGA775 processors weren't any faster than s478 counterparts, DDR2 had terrible latency, and PCI-e was no better than AGP 8X. :)

Exactly. Which would make it an ideal board for gamers looking for an economical upgrade to PCIe graphics cards back in 2004/2005, but to release this board NOW in 2007? :?

A little digging did unearth a couple socket 478/PCI express boards from back in the day:
Asus P4GD1
Albatron P4cpro

Both are now discontinued and were manufactured in very small quantities, making them near impossible to find, even on Ebay.

Perhaps Asrock feels the need to fill a niche 2 years old? Hey, I won't complain. I have a Celeron D 310 here that's begging to do 3.6GHz again. I'm sure others also have some 478 cpus collecting dust.
