Hello,

I have an older Dell Machine that wont let me into the BIOS. It should be by
pressing DELETE, like a machine we have here just like it. But all delete
does is remove the Dell Splash (Pre-Boot) Screen and then just boot
normally. It wont let me into the BIOS...suggestions?

Thanks,
Brian

Try tapping the DEL key as soon as the machine is powered up. If that
doesn't then try tapping the F2 key.

Are we supposed to guess what model you have?

Dimension L667r

Neither DEL or F2 will get me into the BIOS..and as stated before, DEL just
removes the DELL SPLASH Screen so I can see the pre-boot info.

Could there be a jumper or something that is preventing us from using DEL to
get into BIOS? This is just so odd.

Reboot and hold DEL down until you get an error message.

perhaps num lock is on and you are pressing the "./Del" key that is at the
bottom of the numeric keypad rather than pressing the "Delete" key that is
in the separate navigation keypad.

Yes. The BIOS will tell you there is a keyboard error and offer the possibility
to enter the BIOS setup. When all else fails, power on the computer and hold
down ANY key. Please don't ask where on the keyboard the ANY key is. :)

As a last resort, the poster could also pop the CMOS battery in hopes of
generating a F1/F2 or other hot-key prompt on the first boot after
reinstalling the battery.

Of course, he'd lose his BIOS configuration and time/date settings if that
were done.

Joe,
Try removing the CMOS battery on the motherboard and wait an hour to
give the caps time to dissipate, then reboot.

does the machine boot at all? it is not clear if you are trying to get into
the bios to change something or if the machine has a problem that you are
trying to correct in the bios. if it does not boot at all then wait for it
to freeze and then look at the 'abcd' leds on the back of the machine and
note what color they are (yellow or green) or if they are off. the pattern
or lights can be looked up on support.dell.com to provide clues as to where
the source of the problem is.
