The CD/DVD drive in my PC was left without the power cable plugged in for a few weeks (mostly download games, rarely use CDs).

While trying to install Diablo 3 today I realize the drive is not hooked up and plug in the cable. Now the drive runs oddly. It sounds like it is spinning very quickly, but only off and on. For example, while installing the game the drive will make a noise similar to high speed fan. While this is happening, the game will install a portion off the disc. Then the noise will stop and the game will stop installing itself. Rinse and repeat.

The drive is an Asus DRW 24B1ST ATA. Purchased on Newegg ~2 years ago and has always run fine.

Anyone have any ideas/help?

Thanks for your time!

try cleaning the dvd burner...use a disc you can get from a music store..walmarts..etc...a dvd cleaner set isn't all that expensive

the other thing you can try is blowing it out as well with a can of air...a few blasts may clear out dust and gunk that could be obscuring the lens of the laser.

try the air first...but make sure to disconnect all cables and reconnect them to make sure they are fully seated and correctly aligned.

If no joy...try the dvd cleaning disc.

That's about it..after that...all you have left is a bad unit...but as you know...$25 will get you another!

Good Luck

Down to $17.99 on newegg now. I bought a Asus DRW 24B1ST for about $25 2yrs ago. It only lasted about 2 months and Asus promptly sent me another. The replacement is still hanging in there but, to be honest in spite of the fact that Asus is a good company you really shouldn't expect too much for $25.

Bottom line for $17.99, buy another one. They work just great, until they Don't. :sol:
