Celeron 950 hangs up without any reason

I recently became owner of an old fashioned Socket 370 based PC. It has 466 MHz CPU, and VIA 693A based Motherboard. I tried installing Celeron 950 CPU -> it worked. But the machine is extremelly unstable. Windows 98 hangs up abaout 10 to 20 minutes after boot. The same happens to NT and linux (the last one is the best - hangs up after an hour to two). After installing back old 466 CPU everthing works fine. I checked the cooling - the 950 didn't even get to 50 C... The SDRAM is PC133. I can't directly set the core voltage, but motherboard automatically set it to 1.75 volts. Anyone has an idea why is this happening?

What is the name/type of motherboard?

If it is not some "fly by night"er then one can probably
look up the what the board limitations are.

This may give u a better understanding of the situation.

Your motherboard may only support the Celeron A-PGA processors?

I don't exactly know the type of the motherboard, but it's something cheap (it says "Clayton" in POST screen). I bought this PC from a man who was upgrading all workstations at his office.
It might be the mb, but don't you think that if the mb cannot support a CPU, it just doesn't boot?

I discovered something funny about this PC. It was o/c for most of its life.. :)

Well if it is a "Clayton" it is not one of the more common manufacturers I see around here. A quick search on google has not shown me much (anything) about a "Clayton" motherboard. Try using the Bios version string for a search. (u can use the pause key while the system boots (maybe)).

You can look on the actual PCB board, model/make etc should be written there (open the case).
