I am having trouble playing DVDs.

I have an Asus A7N8X Deluxe, with 512 Ram, and Atholon XP 2600, GeForce 4 Ti4200, Sony's DVD-ROM DDU1621 on it's own IDE Channel with Ultra DMA 2 enabled. I have a sound blaster audigy with SPDIF digital out going to a pre-amp, amp and speakers.

when i try to play a DVD using Software decoders (both PowerDVD XP 4.0 and Intervideo WinDVD Platinum) it will start, i can set up 5.1 sound and then the movie will play for 10 seconds then either freeze (forcing a hard reboot), not respond so i have to close the software player, or there is choppy or no sound. Sometimes it will freeze when trying to do audio setup.

Any Ideas??? Thanks for your time

Is this a new DVDROM drive, it could be defective if the problem is only showing up when you play DVDs, and no other time. If its not new it could be a dirty lens, your system is way past any DVD playback inadequacies, it almost got to be a problem with the drive itself, unless you're running WinXP Pro, for some reason there seems to be problems arising with XP loosing DVDROM drives.

Do you have a friend with a known good DVDROM that would let you swap it out to find out if the drive is the problem.

thanks for your response, i am pretty sure that it is the drive too....the rest of the system and apps. are pretty stable. I'm am using WinXP pro....i ran burnintest on the drive, and it was bringing up reading errors only with DVD's in the drive. the test ran fine with normal CD's, CD-R's. Would cleaning help, or should i just replace it?

thanks...
