Core 2 duo or P4?

You guys do realize that P4s are still selling, right? Most of the world is not filled with geeky enthusiasts.
And we're here to prevent stupid kick yourself in the head mistakes like that.

I'm glad we can educate this newb. Maybe he can spread the gospel about the C2D vs PD. Then when one of his friends wants a PD at high clock speeds, the newb can say the C2D will rape that PD, never mind the PD is clocked so high and cheap to boot.

True, the OP should have done a little research on the web before asking, and he would have answered his own question with ease. However, at least he IS asking questions, which lots of people aren't doing and still going to PC shops and buying P4Ds! We sometimes forget this since for the large part people on forums like these are far better informed.

So well done OP, keep asking questions. May as well use your brain since you have one :)

A valid option, no? I know it has onboard gfx but you can turn it off and use a card no problem. Doesn't have 5 PCI slots, but surely 1) you dont need 5 and 2) your 12x9 or smaller current mobo doesnt have that many anyway? Also has 2 RAM slots only but we've talked about this.

sry man, its 20pin power, i need a 24.

and im not a total newb at computers. i was new the C2D was faster then a P4 but i was unsure about the core clock speed 1.8 vs 3 and i needed a opionon. and know im talking about motherboards so it should be posted in the motherboard catorgory. but meh.

Nice work guys...all are very good answers. Now, there's was an old saying..."If you gave a man a fish, he'll eat it and come back for more, but if you teach him how to fish he will have enough fish eat for the rest of his life".

Cheers! 8)

You dont need a 24pin. Any decent power supply, if 24pin, would come with a 20pin adapter. If you've got a unreputable brand PSU, then just get an adapter yourself, it's hardly the main issue!

As for clock speed, 1.8 vs 3.0 and all, performance-wise people have answered your question already, but you really should not neglect the fact that the P4 runs hot as hell! So if you're concerned about temps you'll NEED an aftermarket cooler, thats extra cost, plus your power bill will be higher.

im not concerened about temps or OCing. I want to purchese a C2D and a new mobo. and if u have a link to a 24pin to 20 pin adapter id appreciate it, I only find 20pin to 24pin. And i only have a 24pin power supply.

well i dont OC. the only thing i ever tried doing was OCing my vid card. If I could OC the C2D im gona buy (w/out changing voltage) how high could i put it? 1.9ghz?

I did find that, but after re-looking (got lil bored) at NewEgg, if you like shopping there, even though it's out of stock, they do have one:

Rosewill 7.8" EATX power supply 24P Female to ATX 20P Male motherboard Cable Model RCW-303 - Retail

Out of Stock (ETA:04/19/2007)

Since you said you need to save up, perhaps they will have it when your ready to buy it.

But try to keep in mind that the MB will be your most important part you buy, and you will be limited by that. If your going to save up money, perhaps you should re-think your budget. Perhaps after April prices may help your situation.

well im buying from tigerdirect since they dont charge taxes in my area and they have what i need which i didnt find at new egg. At the moment my pc setup is

i915GL Chipset
3.06Ghz P4 with a 533mhz Bus
1.2GB DDR 400 (3x256mb and 1x 512mb)
160Gb 7,200 HDD
Nvidia 6200 OC PCI
1x DVD DL Burner
1x External DVD
1x CD
Digital Media Drive
11 USB (4 on back, 3 on front, 4 on moniter)
20" LCD with soundbar.
Saitek Eclipse II keyboard
and a laser mouse

lol see the diffrence with buying the C2D and a new mobo. Exciting huh?

oh on that mobo can i run the DDr 2 and DDR at the same time? like have 2 pieces of DDR 2 in and 2 x DDR in and use em both or only 1 or the other?
