i have a an intel q965 mother board.
it currently has a socket 775 core 2 duo e8400 3.0 ghz cpu
i was wondering if i would be able to put a core 2 quad in there, because i noticed that they have 775 socket, too.
thanks for the help, in advance!

Not necessarily true. The Q965 chipset does not officially support any 45nm CPUs and yet he is running an E8400. With later BIOS updates it may very well support Core2Quads. It depends on the motherboard manufacturer. So we really need the exact model.

In retrospect I may have been hasty: it's surprisingly hard to research clear compatibility info on these older 775 chipsets :pt1cable:

There's no official support given for anything beyond 65nm C2Duo where I can find info on the chipset, then I dig up this document:

Lots of older LGA 775 chipsets got BIOS updates allowing them to run faster/newer processors than they were designed for. I have seen Core2Quads on P945 boards before. Like I said it really depended on the motherboard manufacturer.

Interesting, I can't find anything saying the E8400 is supported either. Did you build the computer or buy it from an OEM like Dell?
