Hi
I have a P4 3.0Ghz Prescott and it runs idle at 59c, fully loaded at 78c. If I leave the computer in the bios for 5 min, the temp would go up to around 70 (doing nothing). Can anyone who has the same or similar CPU post here how their temp fluctuates?

I am thinking of getting a Zalman 7000 HSF, but not sure how much it would help.

Thanks

Actually is a 3.2 prescott running with tha zalman 7000 heatsink you where considering.

Its actually running pretty cool, maybe its your heatsink, it might not be properly seated..Also what kind of case you got? might be factor and last but not least what is your room temp?

I am using the stock Intel HSF, using coolermaster Thermal paste, I thnk its properly seated cos I have reinstalled it a few times, and on different mboard as well...

I have an aluminium case, cant remember the brand, but I also tried running the cpu with teh case open (both side) and made absolutely no difference. room temp is quite cool, now that we are heading to winter here.. cant imagine running this in summer... :(

Well those prescotts run hot that temp is not uncommon.I would recomend getting a sp-94 from thermalright or get a watercooling kit and over clock that mother.

Thermal paste
Be aware that thermal paste may disperse in time , leaving no interface material between the CPU and HSF, so it needs to be replaced from time to time. If you want a long term solution use a thermal pad.
When was the paste last replaced? A part of it might have dispersed, leaving a smaller contact surface. My advice is check this fact ASAP, b4 the CPU gets the chance to fry. The thermal protection might act in that case, but I never fully rely on it

Also whats important in a case is the airflow, thats why opening both side pannel wont change much unless you point a big fan or something directly at your computer.
You should have at least two fans (not counting GPU/CPU/PSU)one intake and one exhaust. Also if your case is small and cramped with cables and stuff airflow will suffer so no matter what HSF you put on your cpu, the air stays in the case and gets warmer.

Its normal dude; Prescott was born chroncially depressed (happens a lot with late borns), and is suicidal. Its a piece of melted rock, and it desperatly wants to melt again, which is good, because its more usefull melted anyway, the only problem is it tends to kill motherboards and PSU's in the process. Better play safe, overvolt it with like 2.5v, so it dies instantly, Prescott happy, get a real CPU, you happy, retailer happy, problem solved, everyone happy
