How's Crysis, btw? I love the opening HALO jump scene. Also when the sun comes up and level 1 just opens up. :)

Tweaker's tip: copy these commands into a .txt file, rename it system.cfg, then put it in steam/steamapps/common/crysis. Gives some depth to the lighting that I think is lacking, removes a couple SSAO errors, increases draw distance for objects and vegetation, drastically improves textures, improves water reflections, and blurs more edges (Looks fine at 1080p, and also there's a side effect of thickening the foliage). Some of the commands are taken from Warhead's files, since Crytek improved the highest settings for the second game. Some of these commands I can't imagine playing without.

e_view_dist_ratio_vegetation=65
e_view_dist_ratio_detail=50
e_view_dist_ratio=100
r_DetailDistance=12
r_DynTexMaxSize=135
r_UseEdgeAA=2
r_TexturesStreaming=0
r_SSAO_downscale_ztarget=0
r_SSAO_radius=2.5
r_SSAO_amount=0.7
r_SSAO_darkening=0.4
r_HDRLevel=0.75
r_HDRBrightOffset=8
r_HDRBrightThreshold=3
r_WaterUpdateFactor=0
r_WaterUpdateDistance=0

Can't believe no one's linked this guide yet, either. http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis_1.html

I use pretty much the same HDR commands.....definitely improves the lighting.

One thing to note (for malmental).......do not use the in-game AA (turn it to off). If you use it, it will override the r_UseEdgeAA command listed above.

3840x1024 looks badass! Better than 5760x1080 (tried it out for a week)...

I can imagine 3240x1920 being ok though, but the stupid monitors I picked up didn't have rotation. Or tilt. Or any decent feature that should be standard.

Okay....so I had to record a little vid to demonstrate how quickly and intuitively the middle-mouse switching system can work. 😉

First switch to speed to approach the building, then switch to power to make the jump (don't blink here or you'll miss the switch), then switch to cloak mid-jump before landing on the roof. You just can't do stuff like this, this quickly, in Crysis 2.....in the time it takes just to hold down the darn jump button and wait for the character to actually jump, I could switch twice and run circles around him with the original character.

Oh I know how it works, and I'm pretty good at it. But it doesn't matter how good you become, it's still clumsy and doesn't lend itself well to competitive play (nor did Wars layout but that is another story). If the game doesn't translate to competent competitive gameplay, the multiplayer is doomed. I have a lot less issue queuing power jump during powerslide in Crysis 2, than I do with interrupting the flow of my mouse control to cater to an utterly convoluted control scheme lol. Clearly Crytek felt the same way as they have entirely forsaken it for the bad design that it was :x. If they had wanted to keep it, they could have just as easily attached the middle mouse function to left bumper and had the right analog stick functioned as the mouse flick. They just abandoned it because it was a large part of the reason nobody is interested in Wars multiplayer. It's awful compared to any of its competitors, sadly.

Eh, you get too wide and the image just gets so stretched out it's kind of useless. It's really too bad, I don't know why it has to get all "fisheye" with such wide resolution. If you've ever put the field of view way too high (like 120) it's like that. Everything at the edges gets warped and stretched.

But, that is only my experience and thoughts. I know a lot of people like it. I'm kind of waiting and plan to just buy a single large display like a 2560x1440.

And you only had to give up lean, prone, and speed to get it. 😉

The fact is, if you put Nomad in an MP against Alcatraz, there would be no contest......Alcatraz is just too slow and laggy. Solid FPS mechanics were replaced with cheap gimmicks like forward kick sliding (somebody explain that mechanic to me.....I've never been able to speed up while sliding like a base runner) and the even more ridiculous "air stomp."

Of course, I realize we're talking about a video game here....but I'm a fanboy and I feel obligated to argue my position. 😀

Oh. my. God. If you start down this train of thought we're gonna need a bigger thread! lol

I do agree on that one. Air stomp was just ridiculous. I never was able to hit an NPC with the air stomp, like how they did it in the Crysis2 trailer.

I didn't give up speed. You still have maximum speed, it's just ready to be used any time you sprint. Instead of having default sprint and maximum speed sprint, you just have maximum speed sprint that's ready to go at the push of a button.

As for lean and prone, that is all and good for the first two Crysis games, but it's not needed for Crysis 2. It doesn't fit the pace of the game. It just doesn't fit. Crysis 2 is a different style shooter with a different pace, and lean and prone are rendered moot.

The more time I spend with Crysis 2 the more I really appreciate the developers vision and artistic direction. I agree that it will never be on the same level as Crysis. But at the same time, when I lay aside all my fanboi inhibitions and stop and judge Crysis 2 on it's own merits, one thing becomes clear above all else...

This game is damn good.

+1 across the board.

Here is where I will agree with you.....the game is damn good when judged on its own merits, without drawing comparison against the original. It may sound like I come off as a hater, but I really like the game, and compared to most modern SP FPS campaigns, it is definitely well above par, and IMO, the current leader in graphic quality.

I just have a different view of FPS mechanics than most people seem to. Crysis is a 6-speed manual and Crysis 2 is paddle shifters.....and I'm a manual kind of guy. I don't like cover systems (auto lean), I hate takedown attacks, crosshairs, etc........I just like to be in control of my character and be allowed freedom of movement in as many ways as possible....to me that makes for the most immersive experience. I realize I'm fighting against a changing tide (well....it's not really a tide, having manual stealth mechanics in a game, such as lean and prone, are pretty much history), so I might as well just accept it and move on.

I can understand where you are coming from.

I am a big fan of the first game. I long for a return to the jungle. Check this...

For a shooter that takes about 10 hours to beat, that's a lot of time. This is not an RPG, after all. Every one of those hours were spent in single player.

I know better than most exactly what you're talking about.

But Crysis 2 is innovative. It takes accessibility to a new level. That is the future, that is where games are going. They are evolving.

Crysis 2 will never take the place of Crysis. But for what it is, it's spectacular. And like it or not, it's also the future.

It's certainly a good thing that mods and the still-incredible visuals keep Crysis fresh, even 4+ years later. That way it's not depressing like going back and playing Halo PC or Far Cry after a few years.

I enjoyed the combat better in Crysis 2 because I felt more powerful, and more equipped to go up against the tougher Ceph (upgraded versions of armor, movement, and stealth modes are ridiculous on normal difficulty). But there's just something about Crysis - probably the island setting, I love the beach. It's like a magnet - I just finished Crysis 2 and loved it, but the game I want to start again from the beginning is Crysis, even though I've logged about 70 hours in it already. 😀

Btw Stringjam, nice analogy about the manual/paddle shifters!

Good analogy, and to expand on it, guess what kind of shifters they use in competitive racing these days? 😛 I will defend Alcatraz to the death!

I just played Crysis Warhead and Crysis 2 a few days ago, mainly to run benchies on CW and I still feel that warhead is a better looking game. The explosions, foliage, people, water, and a ton of other things just do it for me. As others have said, many of the gameplay mechanics were superior. Maybe I'm a product of the 80s but Psycho kind of reminds me of Jason Statham in his attitude and voice. I don't know crap about Alcatraz as I'm just now getting to the part of the game were Hargrave is talking to you but I think Psycho takes the pie hands down. I also feel like the nanosuit's voice is getting extremely old holding the player's hand on every level in C2, as if it were even necessary considering the game without hints is a cakewalk. In CW you were left to figure everything out on your own. I didn't realize until my 3rd playthrough that you could punch through rooftops and drop in on opponents, nor did I realize you could grip some dudeski by the trote and trow him trew the air (ya I said trote, trow and trew). I am probably spoiled because the first game I got for the PC was Age of Conan, which to me is still the most under-rated RPG/MMO ever (aside from all voice acting getting canned after level 20). The second game I got was Crysis: Warhead and I seriously was under the impression that every game on PC was going to look as spectacular as AOC and CW. I finished Warhead within 72 hours of purchasing and probably completed it 3 or more times in the first few months of purchase.

After doing benchies, Crysis: Warhead maxxed out with FXAA enabled in the control panel is averaging 60 in 5760X1080 which is almost identical to what I'm getting in C2. I know C2 is 4 years newer and is using DX11 Tess and all but when you look at foliage up close in Crysis Warhead and do the same in C2, the leaf looks lifelike in the former and status quo in the latter, so as far as I'm concerned, Warhead is written better. To cast my vote for which was best optimized for PC, I'm obviously voting for CW.

The 2 things that I feel Crysis 2 did in fact improve upon were: 1.) the stealth kill, I love predator style creeping up and knife killing and the first 2 should have included this. 2.) Speaking of predator, the aliens looking like the predator is a winner for me. I know I'm an outlier with this assertion but I didn't like the octopus has sex with Mr. Freeze and out comes the ice-shooting Alien in Warhead, but that's just me.

Other than that? Absolutely zero comparison.

Try Crysis 2 with MaLDo/Blackfire's Mod 2.0.

I am thinking about making another video that really showcases just how amazing Crysis 2 looks. It blows the first two Crysis games out of the water.

Vanilla it looks like ass.

You are getting 60fps in 5760x1080 with a single 580 in Warhead? I have two 6970s in crossfire and I got like 50 in 1920x1080.

Please do - I was about to download MaldoHD 3.0, but the links are currently down... I think you can adjust the FOV in the mod menu?

OKAY!!!

I will make a video and have it up early this afternoon.

Once I put the video up, I will help you get it going - I know everything you need and where to go and...I got you covered.

I'll be back later.
