I am upgrading an old Dell Inspiron 3421 (touchscreen) with 4gb RAM. While checking, I find that it has a DDR3 1600Hz DIMM RAM?

I thought DIMM RAM was only for Desktops and after checking on the web- Amazon, Newegg etc all the DIMM RAM cards look 'longer' compared to my RAM card.

Also, how do I tell if its a 204 pin or 240 pin card?

Hi,

When a website mentions that a laptop only has 1 x dimm it is actually referring to the fact that the laptop only supports one stick/module of ram and not the actually type you want to upgrade.

Very rare that you will find a laptop that uses full size desktop ram.

Just make sure you don't accidentally buy "DDR3L" the laptop you have there only supports "DDR3"

Follow the link to Newegg for the correct ram:

Right, so it has two slots. I am aware of DDR3L. I have found the following brands from websites in India:

Just to clarify, its not the full size desktop RAm size. It has two rows of memory chips instead of single rows.

Just to be clear you're calling it SODIMM. The manual and website pics I compared all call it DIMM. What am I missing or is it that, laptops simply cannot take DIMM?

Quoted from this link:
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-d...nd-SO-DIMM-RAM-What-do-the-acronyms-stand-for

  • DIMM - Dual In-line Memory Module - still in-line, but with different contacts on both sides (as opposed to this being the same contact).
  • SODIMM - Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module - same as above, but smaller in physical/package size (for portable computers/ laptops)
