Product description, so take some of the superlatives with a grain of salt
:)

The Story:

Casablanca, 2219.

Zoe Castillo is about to get involved in a conspiracy that spans parallel
worlds and hundreds of years.

Something is affecting our world: static interference disrupts technology,
and it seems to be linked to a ghostly presence seen only by a few - a
presence inhabiting a black house in a wintry landscape.

As Zoe begins her search for a lost friend, she discovers that there is a
magical world behind our own - and the search is now on for the one person
who may help Zoe unravel the dangerous web she has become entangled in:

April Ryan.

The Setting:

Spanning three worlds, Dreamfall features dozens of exotic locations, from a
futuristic Casablanca in Stark, to a magic metropolis in Arcadia; from a
strange city at sea, to vast subterranean caverns, and a dark necropolis;
from the high-tech halls of a Japanese corporation, to the frightening realm
of the Winter.

The following are three of the many locations you will visit in Dreamfall:

Casablanca
The warm winds of Northern Africa carry dust from the remnants of the Sahara
across the modern skyline of Casablanca: one of Africa's new megalopolises -
a centre of research and development in biotechnologies, and a haven for
shady business deals.

Marcuria
The capital of the Northlands, and the cradle of humanity, Marcuria was left
desolate ten years ago when the barbaric Tyren armies invaded Ayrede, the
Unified Country. Now, under new rule, Marcuria thrives - although the
so-called "magic ghetto" is making a lot of people nervous.

The Winter
In a place outside, in an eternal twilight, the bitter cold never ends.
Here, the black house holds secrets that will change everything...

Features:

Dreamfall is a thrilling action-adventure featuring three playable
characters, dozens of locations spanning three worlds, exciting set-pieces
with multiple outcomes, action-packed adventure gameplay, and an epic and
emotional storyline.

Unparalleled Gameplay Variety
You will never run out of new things to do! Explore exotic locations, travel
between three worlds, embark on epic quests, converse with fully voiced
characters, fight intelligent monsters, sneak through dark shadows and past
dangerous enemies, solve intriguing puzzles, and play fun mini-games.

Three Playable Characters
Experience the story from three separate perspectives, and use abilities
unique to each character: strength, street-smarts, and dexterity.

Three Worlds
From vast cities to deep forests, across the seven seas and into endless
caverns, above and beyond anything you have ever seen - the twin worlds of
science and magic are filled with challenges and adventure. But in the world
outside the worlds - in the Winter - logic does not apply, and nothing will
have prepared you for the ultimate truth...

Play It Your Way!
Multiple solutions and multiple outcomes place you in charge of the story.
Make choices that affect how people relate to you; solve conflicts with
cunning or with violence; and speak your mind in branching dialogues.

Powerful World Interaction
Interact with the environment through the use of the brand new Focus Field
feature, an easy-to-use context-sensitive interface, and fully analog
character controls - giving you total power over your character.

Hi 🙂

I'm hoping for MUCH from the "solve conflicts with
cunning or with violence" bit ;-)

As long as "cunning" is not purely stealth.
I'm about as good at stealth as I am at combat ;-)

Cheers.

Well, it can't possibly be worse than the multiple box puzzles and the Dreaded Triple-Chapel-Crossing sequence from Broken Sword 3. Though it could be just as bad.

I'm predicting the 'action' is on the same level as Tim Schafer's work (ie.
Full Throttle, Grim Fandango)

Yeah, that would be tolerable - plus, I've heard that there is a way to skip the combat in Full Throttle, but I dunno how. The key thing is, in that particular game the combat is actually FUN, so you don't want to skip it. In things like Broken Sword 3, it's frustrating and not remotely enjoyable (though I rather liked the adaptive music in the combat sequence, the percussion kicks in when a guard gets too close, for example - almost iMUSE reborn. More games should do that). In Grim Fandango (and a couple of notable exceptions in Throttle), the arcade sequences don't really count, because they can only be beaten by figuring out the "trick" to them - they're really conventional puzzles in disguise.

Other notable examples of well-integrated arcade sequences include the racing puzzle in 9 (can only be done by spotting the "trick"), the Survivor game in Return To Zork (turn based so you can take your time, and again there's a slight trick you have to figure out), the space combat system in Mission Critical (a complete scale of difficulty from challenging down to simplistic - the lowest setting makes the computer play for you, which when combined with the speed slider can effectively bypass the whole thing in a couple of minutes) and the fight sequences in Titanic-Adventure out of time (You can still finish the game even if you lose all of the games, you just have to work harder at solving the other puzzles and get less clues).

Examples of really terrible arcade sequences include significant parts of The Feeble Files ("shoot the guards", and especially the arcade games), the WHOLE of Space Quest 4 (those damn sequel police who show up on practically every single screen within seconds and kill you), every arcade puzzle in Broken Sword 3 except the very first one of the box puzzles(Yes, the one in the plane!), the darts game in Sherlock Holmes and the case of the Rose Tattoo (really difficult, and halts the game completely until you win), the fight sequences in The Daedalus Encounter, the blackjack sequence in Titanic (Totally random, yet decides the ultimate outcome of the game. Can you say "save-restore puzzle"?) and, last but not least, the truly awful rat-shooting puzzle in 9 (RSI, anyone?).

Hi !!

I haven't played BS3 yet but I must admit all the moans about crates and
stuff has slightly dampened my ardour :-(

Cheers.

Hi !!

Have you tried the darts game in the Sherlock Holmes Serrated Scalpel game
??
That's a WOW !! ;-)

Cheers.

For what it's worth, I wasn't particulary bothered by those things.
The sneak parts are all about taking the right paths and standing
still at the right times. I did have to play them repeatedly in order
to succeed (particulary the mentioned one) and it did raise my pulse
a bit, but in the end, I liked it.

I'm not good at stuff like that either. I bought Thief beacuse I
found it cheap and liked the idea, but I've only finished the first
chapter. Then it got too hard for me.

Luckily for me I also generally prefer the non-adrenaline-pumping
gameplay of adventure games anyway (even if I have played games such
as Rayman 2 to completion and liked it) so it works out nicely
anyway. :)

Hi Rikard 🙂

That's some reassurance that I appreciate - Thanks !! :-D

[I too have "Thief" but haven't played it yet since I heard it is all about
sneaking :-(]

Cheers.

Well, Thief's slightly different in that a) sneaking is the selling point of the game, rather than something slipped in to bulk it out in place of puzzles, and b) they do it properly, ie if you're spotted, you don't die instantly, you do have the option to run and hide or (if you're feeling reckless), you can stand and fight and have a moderate chance of winning in many cases (that said, fighting in Thief is deliberately made difficult so you really have to sneak if you want to win).

I thought the original Thief demo was neat, but really quite hard, and I
didn't think I'd ever get very far into it before being frustrated.

Recently I picked up Thief 3, and played it from one end to the other. It
was brilliant. The skills come with time, and the mood is incredible. Give
it a try.

That said, I really hope there's nothing like it in Dreamfall. My litmus
test will be whether my wife and I can play it together, with one person
at the keyboard and the other one giving instructions. 🙂

The box shifting puzzles were fun at first, but there were too many in
the game. I got killed so many times in the chapel that I became
convinced I wouldn't get beyond that point, but I did it eventually. I
loathe action sequences in adventure games, and I wish they would give
you a bypass, as they did in one of the Monkey games, I remember.
Having a points total is good, because you can opt to lose the points
to get past the obstacle.

Hi !!

Yes. I too would appreciate an "alternative" action to be made available if
really difficult sequences MUST be included in a game.

Cheers.
