Drive Type Number

I installed a DVD ReWriter yesterday. Windows recognizeed it but would no
read or write any disk, when I right clicked, it would eject the disk so
something must be working. I read a reccommded article suggesting to check
in the registry to see what Drive Type Number it was assigned. It was
assigned a 2 which I believe is for a CD-RW. I looked on the manufacturers
site who claims no additional drivers are required, Win XP has them all.
Since then I took the new drive out and put my old dvd rom drive back in.
Out of curiousity I checked the registry for what the drive type number is,
it is now 3 which I am assuming is for DVD Rom drives. I double and triple
checked all the connections before I switched back and nothing changed. I
guess I have the following questions:

1. In the registry what is the Drive Type Number for a DVD REWriter?

2. Does the fact that Windows recognizes it and calls it the right name
mean anything?

3. Is the manufacturer correct about not needed any other drivers?

See my response to your other post. Number 2 is correct because it is
for the Windows recording software. You will need to install a DVD
Burning Program to write DVD's. Please keep your post to one post so it
is easier to follow and help with.
