I have two laptops: Lenovo Legion Y720 (personal) and HP EliteBook 850 G4 (work). Running Win 10 on both. I'd like to be able to connect either one (not simultaneosly) to two monitors: BenQ BL2706HT and DELL P2720DC at the same time, and have the view extended just like I would connect two monitors to two separate ports on a laptop/PC.

The Y720 has HDMI and miniDP ports available, as well as Thurderbolt 3. However, the HP one only has a DP/VGA available. As per official specifications, the USB-C on the HP EliteBook 850 G4 is not equivalent to Thurderbolt 3 (Up to 5 Gbps data transfer and 15 W power). As for the monitors, the BenQ has HDMI/VGA/DVI, and the DELL has HDMI/USB-C/2xDP (one for daisy chain output).

So my question is, what would be the most cost efficient way to have this setup working for both laptops, since I'll need to switch between them on a daily basis? Maybe using a DP splitter with MST hub would do the trick, or are there better ways to achieve it?

Solution
For the y720
HDMI to BenQ monitor
use a Mini Dp to DP dongle and run a DP cable to the Dell monitor

For the HP
plug a vga into the Benq
Reuse the DP for the dell
Then you will only have to switch inputs on the BenQ unless it auto detects
For the y720
HDMI to BenQ monitor
use a Mini Dp to DP dongle and run a DP cable to the Dell monitor
