I have a Tosiba A Satellite (notebook) . I tried this and it didn't work... The CD/DVD drive doesn't even show up in the device manager. Is there anything else i can do?

I fixed it myself, and you should learn how I did it!

1. I noticed that when I pressed the open button on the dvd drive tray with the power on, it would not open.

2. This is a question that your support people should ask.
If the tray does not open, it means the drive is NOT getting any power.

3. I removed the power and battery and unscrewed the mounting screw on the back that holds the drive in the laptop.

4. I pulled out the drive and saw that the bracket on the end of the drive was bent! The drive was not plugged in reliably!

5. I straightened the bracket and reinstalled the drive.

6. It now works perfectly!

I ran it, now what? It gave me a list of "hidden files" but they all appear to be located in the same windows folder, probably update logs. What now?

I have Dell desktop PC and after taking it in for repairs at PC World following a complete hard disk failure, it came back and the DVD/CD ROM drives seemed to not be recognised at all (i.e. when I click into My Computer, the DVD/CD ROM drives aren't listed). The power was to it was working fine and it would open and close but nothing else. I ran a diagnostics in the system setup and the drives were simply not recognised... but I refused to believe I'd had another hardware failure! :non:

I couldn't be arsed taking it back to PC World, I logged a complaint with them but they are expensive and would have probably insisted I buy brand new drives.

Anyway, I tried all the recommendations in this thread and nothing worked. I tried:

- Downloading McAfee Rootkit Detective - nothing.
- Updating all my drivers online - nothing.
- Opening up my PC and checking all hardware connections - nothing.
- Downloading all Firmware updates - nothing.
- Running AVG anti-virus - nothing.
- Deleting the upper/lower filters and rebooting - nothing.
- Enabling through device manager (DVD/CD ROM drive wasn't even listed) - nothing.

Here's how I finally fixed it: (this method may vary depending on your make/model)

...I'll put this in my next post as I need to reboot to double-check the method :)

Okay, here's how I finally fixed it:

1. Reboot.

2. Press F2 (or whatever your equivallent is) as your system is reboots to access System Setup.

3. Scroll down with you keyboard to 'Drives' and press enter.

4. Scroll down to the affected drive and press enter (if you don't know which drive is affected or if multiple drives are affected, just do it to all that apply - that's what I did!)

5. Using you keyboard, select 'On' (which should be highlighted in green) and press enter. Do this for all affected drives.

6. Press escape, save changes and exit.

Your PC will now boot up. Cross your fingers and check your drives in My Computer. Let me know if this works for you too!

If your computer missing filters (PC registery) then remove the (HP) DVD drive
There is a bracket on back of HP DVD drive put that bracket right position then restart computer

Hi,

Have you tried installing them only one of them separately? I suggest you to make sure each of them is working well. Then try to make them work together. Feel free to visit DigitalSupportTech for getting help.

I was doing a disc clean up so I could then do a disc defrag, during the clean up I erased my cd/dvd burner. So when I use Sonic or Express burn plus they both say "no drive detected" can anyone help get my burner back. A huge thanks in advance...

i had the same problem - the cd drive wasn't showing

did all the things said here and still no joy...

then as a last resort i turned off my pc, took the back off, disconnected the cd drive, reconnected it, and...

rebooted and it was back! :)

Hi Folks,

I have a Toshiba Satellite M200 laptop with Vista Ultimate installed. Been using it for 2 years and recently all of a sudden my CD/DVD drive is not detected in My Computer. Whenever i insert a disc i can hear the sound of drive rotation but neither the Auto Run opens nor in Computer the drive is being detected. Once suddenly it reappeared but unfortunately in the subsequent system reboots I faced the same problem again. I can see the red light in the drive blinking. In device manager I cannot find the hardware (it is a Pioneer make).

I tried to do the registry tweak after seeing some posts here in this forum, that is to delete the Lower and Upper filters in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} but am unlucky this time as well as I cannot find the filters at all.

Am at loss to what to do. Please help me guys. I want to make a clean install of my OS. Because of this DVD drive problem I do not know how to go about installing the OS.

I have just applied the upper and lower filters solution; it worked for my two DVD/CD drives. I am using Windows XP SP3. They just disappeared to windows 2 days ago though th BIOS and Windows systems could detect them. Anyone know why?

I did exactly what you said to do in the above, but there are NO filters. Where the hell are thay supposed to be??

I bought Toshiba Satellite A 500 series with Windows 7 last week. The drive worked fine until yesterday but this morning it was not recognised.

I booted the computer and with F2 enetered SETUP utility. Then selected "Load Default Setup" then Save and exit. The drive was recognised.

This may not work for everyone but worth trying because it is fast, easy and does not cost anything.

Good luck.

I recently bought a laptop hp dv6 series. I had a problem with cd/dvd drive icon not appearing in my computer. When I found other ppl, with posts with the same problem. I had gone into regedit and this worked for me.

Thanks a ton Brother. This has helped just when I was thinking of repalcing the drive fo my Dell laptop.

OMG! Thank you!!! I've been trying to get rid of Vista and download Windows 7 but with no DVD drive detected, I thought I was stuck with Vista forever. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!@

I'm asking the same thing I've seen asked multiple times that I have yet to see an answer to because it's also my problem. I go into the registry and there ARE NO FILTERS. I see the filter solution has helped many people, but what about the few of us that it hasn't helped because there are no filters listed in that registry key? What can we do in that case? Please help!?!?!?!? Kthx :)

Hi Charmed Angel, what does the registry look like? Can you copy and paste it in here? Should be more than 5 lines of text. I've been trying for 2 weeks until this fix actually worked. ( i feel your pain)

I tried the reg thing and now it doesn't detect anything. my mouse ,keyboard, usb ports, floppy drive, or DVD ROM.I can't even do a restore. could some1 plzz help me.

Did you double-click open the line of text in the registry that says:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
A few lines of text should appear and you want to read for the two lines that have the words 'upper' and another that says 'lower' in them, Delete just those two lines of text.

Greetings,
I have a HP Pavilion laptop DV 2500 series pre-loaded with Vista. Regularly updated and now running version 2 of Vista.
Recently my DVD drive has disappeared as a drive. Tried all things from removing upper and lower filters (which was not registered in my system) to uninstalling I tunes.
The drive does not have screws with which to easily unscrew. So cannot try this.
Have run "Fix it" from MS but does not sort out the issue.
Can anyone help.
Drive is also not reflected in BIOS, but when going to boot menu, it is reflected. Drive comes on when starting up, but is still not recognized.
Drive is also not reflecting in device manager....
Help please....
