If you are having problems with your cd-dvd drive not working or not showing up on explorer. Do the following. If you have Norton 360, uninstall it throught the control panel. Reload Norton 2010 Internet Security and it will take care of your problem. Norton 360 "Backup" for some reason is occupying this address. It will not allow the driver to load or do what they call "A handshake" with the cd drive. If you have a different virus/security program, try uninstalling it and see if your cd works. Mine did. Almost sent it back for repair shop but decided to tackle it myself seeing how there are a lot of people on the internet with the same problem. If you just uninstall Norton 360 it will probably work but that's not how I did it. I loaded 2010 immediately. Maybe you can reload Norton 360 after the drive works. No I'm not a computer geek. I just like to figure things out for myself. The professionals won't tell you and your computer manufacturer can't fix it either. Believe me, it works.

Have done all you suggested but what do the upper and lower filters look like?? All I see is a set of numbered folders:

Hello guys,

THIS IS MY SOLUTION, AND IT WORKS 100% -- JUST READ PATIENTLY:

I bought this new DVD-RW and I plugged it UNDER the DVD-RW that I already have. That means that the new one is a slave, and the one on top is the master. If you have an IDE cable, see how the one on top is named MASTER while the one on bottom is SLAVE. Anyway after I successfully plugged in the power and the IDE, I restarted the PC and much to my dissatisfaction, the PC is not recognizing it. It is not recognized in My Computer, Device Manager, and not even in BIOS (when I restarted the PC and pressed F1 to go there and set the Master and Slave from there). Anyway I was frustrated.

I tried deleteing the upper and lower filters and restarting, but there was no use. I even read a comment about how someone plugged the IDE wrong, so AGAIN I disassembled my computer for the 10th time and I checked them but it was all correct.

To make a loooooong story short, I read something about jumper settings. The jumper is that small area on the back of the DVD drive that is directly to the left of the IDE pins where the IDE cable is supposed to go. Anyway, the jumper has only 6 pins, and it has a tiny piece of plastic, much like a lego piece, that covers two pins at a time. You can see this image (http://www.mysuperpc.com/build/sony_dvd_rw_jumper_master_cr.jpg) to see what I mean. You can remove this piece of plastic easily, but be cautious because it is a tiny little ah heck.

Now follow what I am saying to a T if your case is similar to mine:

1- Decide whether you want your new DVD drive to be a master or a slave.

2- If it is a slave, make sure you reserve a space for it BELOW the other DVD drive. If it is a master, reserve that space ABOVE the existing DVD drive.

3- Before you actually install the DVD drive, make sure you adjust the jumper settings. For the MASTER drive, make sure you cover the two pins to at the far right of the jumper. This means that the jumper would look something like this => ::|

4- For the SLAVE drive, you have to cover the two pins in the center of the jumper. So the jumper would look like this => :|:

5- After you adjust the jumper settings for both drives, install them in their correct slots, and make sure you plug in the IDEs properly.

6- Restart your computer. The new DVD drive should be recognized.

Take care all and have a nice day,

My driver just dissapeared. the dvd do have power and open when i use the manual open button, but it doesn't load any disc... I made format to my windows 7 to try to fix the problem. the problem get fixed, and when the laptop connected to internet to upgrade software, the next time i open it, the driver has been disapeared!!! Can anybody help me? please!!! 🙁

I dont know if you figured this out yet, but I did all of the registry filter fixes, even removing and re-detecting the IDE channels in Device Manager. These all solved the problem, but only short term. The issue always came back after a few times.
I finally found Eusing Free Registry Scanner and Repair. I ran it, fixed it, and my DVD has been working fine ever since.

Hope this helps

My PC all of a sudden would not detect the DVD burner or even an external DVD burner via the USB. I followed your instructions and it fixed my problem. Thanks heaps.

Hi Everyone,

I tried the same thing with the filters and even did microsoft fix it and all their manual/do it yourself suggestions on the site. I even tried a suggestion above about the drive being disabled but nothing worked for me until I happened to try something on my own. I went to control panel>system and maintenance>device manager and then clicked "disk drives" then right clicked on my actual disk drive and selected "scan for hardware changes." And what do you know, my drive is working now! Woo hoo!

I've been working on this all day and I finally can watch this cd-rom that I need for school. I'm afraid of it disappearing again when I have to shutdown but if it does, hopefully trying the same fix will work again.

If I run into problems, I'll be sure to update it on here. Let me know if this helps anyone. I'm not sure if this was discussed anywhere else on this thread because I didn't read the whole thing. As soon as my fix worked, I posted this. Good luck, everyone!

So, I'm having a strange problem. My CD/DVD drive(made by liteon) is not being detected by anything, BIOS, My Computer, Device Manager, etc, etc. The power is connected, and I've not a second DVD drive to interfere. I have done all described in this thread, in order to attempt to resolve the problem.

...However, I am completely able to use the DVD drive to boot up my computer from, as in, run repair sequences from the Windows install disk, diagnostics from the Dell disc.

So, my computer detects the drive, and can even run things from it, however, when Windows XP boots up and I check my computer or device manager... Nothing.

Can anyone explain what's wrong here, and have any fixes for it?

I'll try to summarize the above information linked here:

This is the lower driver that I have that keeps loading. It would seem WinAmp 5 and other Sonic burning powered programs (Nero, others) install this as part of their burning software. It also seems that to remove you must search the entire registry for "PxHelp20" and remove every entry. You can avoid installing it by not installing Winamps ripping software. Seems many Dell machines come with this standard.

I'm not sure if this will fix will help... my DVD drive in Windows XP is on this Toshiba Satellite P205-S7469 (originally Vista 32-bit, UPGRADED to XP per mothers request). My issue is that my CD/DVD-ROM (physical only, SCSI emulated ones from D-Tools do not disappear) is appears after hibernation. suspending the machine does not make it disappear, and restarting makes it appear in the control panel again.

In the past, when the drive has completely stopped working but still appears (and in some cases disappeared for good), I found running RootKit detectors helped, locating RootKit's that had tried to hide in the CD-ROM protocol stack. I highly recommend others to try this as well. After locating a rootkit and removing it, I was able to resume normal CD/DVD-ROM function.

For this I have used Microsoft's RootKitRevealer in the past, but also had good luck with Sophos Anti-Rootkit, there may be other/better tools to do it out there, but I haven't had to uninstall a RootKit for awhile, so I'm not sure what is the best thing out there now. Give that a shot if the above method doesn't work for you!

If you're on Windows...
then after you remove the virus (if you had one) and your CD/DVD fails to operate, go to the automated fix from Microsoft...

Nero is not needed; Dell shouldn't have pre-installed it. (Then again, Microsoft isn't needed anymore either!)
