I am a PC gamer so this comment could be bias.
First the gaming market as you know it (in the traditional form) is shrinking, in fact is migrating to the mobile platform and to a certain extent to the PC. The signs are so obvious: weak wiiU and AAA Titles (like Gears Juggernaut, God of war Ascension and the latest Tomb Rider) sales, just to name a few. And because of this we will have the most anemic ''next gen'' ever. Both Sony and Microsoft didn't want to invest to much, because of the uncertain market. The sony approach is a conservative one, make a console with minimum investment and hardware that could still be call ''next gen'', microsoft approach was quite different, instead of creating a uber hardware console and compete directly with sony (on a shrinking market battlefield ) they created a weaker hardware version and target a different market. I don't think the next gen will catch any wings in the future because of the following reasons:
1. there is a global economic recession
2. the "next gen'' will bring little value in comparison to the actual generation
3 .All kind of obscure drm and and fees for the second hand games.
Now a short comparison of the next gen platforms
Nintendo traditional approach, weak on hardware strong on creativity scheme, will not work anymore; you have the mobile and indie games for that.
Microsoft approach to create a new market, again I don't think will succeed, because is an artificial market they are trying to create and there is no demand for that.
Now sony took the healthiest approach in my opinion in fact they have the same approach from ps1, the conservative one. Their generations are clearly define ps1,ps2,ps3 ps4 not like the others xbox#$% or nintendo wiixy, they aren’t trying to hunt new markets in a radical way and is the strongest platform hardware wise from their generation but even so it will be a mere shadow of what ''next gen'' meant in the past. 90% of their games will be capped at 30fps (because the hardware is suitable to go strong on the graphics and weak on the fps) the price of heaving a weak cpu, and I can hardly call this next gen in my opinion.
You can understand the value of the next gen only by the way they are marketed, as oppose with the previous generations of consoles when they were screaming out loud: xy bit processing power, xy gigahertz, xy gflops this time around their lips will be completely sealed only sony making a few announcement of their hardware prowess because they are confident that they have the most powerful console in town but even so, they will no go to the full extent because they don't want their console to look like a midget to the PC
So where does this leave the PC. As you know in the past the PC was the garbage can of the gaming industry but now is coming back stronger and vibrant as ever. You have the indie movement in full swing(And I think we will see more of similar minecraft phenomenon), you have a huge mod community that is bringing from time to time new successful genders to the table so that others could exploit later(the transition from counter striker to the call of duty is a good example), you have middle weight titles coming from kickstarter and AAA going to "free to play" that are very suitable for the pc platform (traditional AAA games are not suitable for PC because of the piracy, crisis 1 was played by more the 15 mil people, this kind of dwarfs any single halo game so there is a huge potential in PC AAA market if only publishers will find innovative ways to monetize their products). And I have examples to back this up, Crytek is making the transition to a free to play company and is targeting the PC, we will have the return of the prodigal son Epic (who so blatantly sad in the past that is a console company) go strong to the PC platform again, right now they are working on a PC exclusive ''Fornite'' and as far as I know they don't have an official announcement of an console exclusive.
One think we need to understand is that allegiance and loyalty is only for the fan boys, publishers and console creators will ALWAYS find allegiance with the money flow.
Now my answer to this idiotic statement about “next gen” capable of making skynet a reality, all I can say is they are disparate as hell to make the ''next gen'' succeed, they are so desperate to prolong the “status quo'' that sometimes they look like clowns to me. If the next gen doesn’t succeed they will be pretty much fucked, because they don't have the means to adapt to the new market trends.
