I'm gonna shoot from the hip and say Mantle's going to add a few additional fps above an already fluid experience. It's not going to be anything radical like a card in a lower price bracket/performance level is suddenly going to leap up to the next tier.

If the 290x is equal to the Titan in performance, it IS a Titan killer. It's 30% smaller, and they managed to get the same performance out of something that much smaller, it's just a blowout. I doubt it will happen though, it's just too much to ask. No doubt it will win in some games, but it's hard to imagine the Titan not being faster overall. But, if it's only slightly faster, and very mixed, it's very bad for this over-sized chip when compared to the much smaller one.

Also, anything optimized for Mantle, which admittedly will be few games initially (but if it's game you really like, it's very important), should easily exceed Titan in performance.

in europe i saw the still high early prices, shown at endusers, going down all the way to 450 and about 600 Euros at the Oct. 14th.
If that was the BF4 Bundle? don´t know.
But the prices disappeared when AMD pushed the NDA (if there ever was one official)

From what I have seen , this card equals the Titan or very slightly looses out (around 3 fps I think it was). I own a Titan (I won it in a competition as there is no way I would pay £800 for a gpu) and I want to see this card do very well and be quite cheap as it will push Nvidia to respond with something better. I have said many times that the only winners in GPU wars are us - the consumers 😀

This is definitely true. We've seen AMD posting high framerates in the past, but it's also been revealed that a lot of those frames are runt/dropped causing video issues even with single cards. A promised driver fix by the end of July resulted in a half-arsed fix for some titles and a promise of more fixes with regard to micro-stutter when using a crossfire setup and really no concrete date of when all of these issues would be resolved. Now take that a step further and use an Eyefinity setup and you're screwed as an AMD customer. There's no room for words like "value" and "performance" to describe a company that's made a habit of promising future fixes while not delivering.

"Hey Johnny! I got a great deal on this video card! FRAPS reports high frame rates and all! Even better than the competition! The only thing is... it doesn't work right on my crossfire setup, but they're sure working on it alright! They'll get it one day! I'm sure they will. They even said so."

Indeed though the biggest game of the year from the biggest publisher will support Mantle Dice BF4!

The Titan is more fallacy that fact, the GTX780 can be overclocked well beyond what a Titan can and is faster, at stocks the Titan is barely faster than some OC designed 780's and the 780 uses less power. So from this stand point if the 290X is infact faster than or equal to the Titan, and faster than the 780 all at stock and can also overclock well while running cool then it will be the alpha card in the market. I am assuming the R9 290 sits in between the 770 and 780 but at the 770's price which will result in AMD having aces in the high end market if you add the never settle bundles its hard to beat the value, if the 290X is $600 Nvidia will have no choice but to engage in a price war which for the end buyer is fantastic news, if you can get 780's, 290's and Titans in the $500-600 range, everyone wins.

@Klunt Bumskrint: The point is not that they are AMD evolved titles. The point is that they are titles in which NVidia beat beat the AMD 7970 if you ask me. So we know it is plenty faster than that...

This, the statement was for AMD to show off its flagship using titles where nvidia were regarded to be better suited for irrespective of the never settle bundle. if the 290X can solomnly see off its competitor in games not tailored for it, then imagine where the games favour AMD what it will do.

People need to stop being so defensive about Brands, if AMD make a faster card then so be it, this normally happens when one company releases after the other. I personally think Nvidia got a bit crass with the GTX680 when they should hav ehad a working GK110, they underestimated AMD's Tahiti and they underestimated AMD's marketing. Where AMD also won was in driver evolution partiularly for the single card setups, Catalyst 12.4 to 13's saw AMD's performance improve around 20-25% while Nvidia barely got the 680 making any progress. I guess AMD don't want to do the same thing and make a flagship that is the alpha card, if they do and give it to us for cheap all things considered then well done to AMD end of story.

290X is to compete with Titan, not the 780. So the fact that AMD's brand new flagship only beats nVidia second tier flagship by 3-4 FPS and the 780 is now over 6 months old... Not impressed. :/

I also wouldn't be impressed considering you spent a fortune on your 780 and there is a cheaper and faster card.

Not bad. And some people talk big because AMD choose titles of their partners, isn't Nvidia doing the very same thing? We all know that Batman is crippled beyond belief on AMD - so i can say i don't care for Batman in benchmarks, than we go to Metro, etc and the story repeating all over again. Complaining because company chooses better way for showoff is silly at best.

As for BF4, it is insteresting because we don't know how much the difference will be in DirectX vs Mantle match both performance and glitch wise.

lol... No. a simple water blocked titan can hit well in the 1.45-1.50ghz range... 780s are capable but their weaker cheaper built pcb's generally dont let the chip go that high.

So AMD was showing very little TBH, and the showcase is a ... hmm how to put it, a not so sexy executed prank to rain on NVIDIA's parade. Anyhow, we had a peek, a quick chat and looked at some performance numbers. So without further ado, have a peek at the photo's and the following limited benchmarks.

Not very impressive considering everyone knows AMD cards perform better on these two titles.

PepitoTV is dead on. This is a competition with no winners other than end users. AMD comes out with this Titan "killer" (presumably on the basis of price). Next time, Nvidia will release a faster board--say a Titan with all of it's cores enabled and will again take the title.

In the end, the title, such as it is, only matters to the fan-boys. For most of us, it's only how much can we afford and for that amount of money, which card will provide the best user experience.

Lol so shady. Like a guy in a trench coat selling watches in an alley: "Pssst, hey buddy - wanna see a graphics card?"

Almost as shady as artificially enhancing FPS averages by injecting runt frames. Oh wait that was due to poor drivers, right? So AMD's developers are either incompetent, or AMD is just unscrupulous in its business practice. Intercepting tech forum reporters on their way to or from the nVidia conference - holed up in a hotel room - speaks for itself after all.

The 290x architecture looks promising, but if the proof is in the pudding and this card is so amazing, why all the cloak-and-douchebaggery? Seems like a lack of confidence. Sure you can say they don't want to lay down their full hand just because they know nV has a few aces up their sleeves. But at least nVidia didn't have to stoop down to this level to keep their ultra high end cards vague and mysterious.

Tahiti at >$300 is a great idea and the 290x *Seems* to be a very good competitor to the 780 especially *IF* it's priced out lower, but I can't get behind AMD's business practices as of late. The ends do not justify the means in my books.

I love competition. It really is true - it doesn't matter who holds the title right at this moment, all that matters is that we get better cards for less money! I really hope the 290x does great so nVidia finally has an incentive to lower prices. Currently, things don't look so hot for AMD in the highest tier though. Marginally beating the 780 is not what we all hoped for, is it? And that is at stock. Now, with both overclocked, that would be the next interesting battle. I hope the 290x does great despite having higher power consumption. nVidia needs a good kick in the butt to lower prices, damn it!
At least in the lower segment the 280x is shining against the 760.
By the way, with this new naming convent of AMD, things are not going to get confusing real quick, right :) 280 vs 760, 290 vs 770, etc... Sounds like nVidia is competing with its older generations 😀

Well, it is called marketing!
Same thing with Nvidia that use those benshmarks that makes their cards looks better than they really are. Thats why we need full test bench to get the truth out, but promising, very promising in deed.

It may be best to compare these results to what 7970 can do in these games and then we can say how much faster this is than 7970. Then we can make a ques how well this card will fare in other games too. It is not so simple in real world, but the basic structure behind the 290 is near enough to 7970 that it will give some reference to what expect in other games!
Ofcourse the 512 bit memory system give some edge in higher resolutions, so the difference will be somewhat smaller in smaller resolutions!

All AMD has to do is keep this amazing price/performance domination for one more generation and a lot of the Nvidia people will start jumping ship. I wonder if Nvidia knows this, or if they thunk they are infallible...

I think you are a little bit confused.
Mantle is a lowlvl API like Glide from 3DFx.
Bare (or direct to) metal programming is way different and more difficult.
Oh and as a person that used Glide a lot, I can say that I saw an improvement maybe like 15% on entire gaming system performance (which is still great), but nothing close to 800%, 😛.

Again that's debatable, there are more than a few people who would argue that GTA5 was/is the biggest game of the year just as there are many people who don't really care for the BF series at all and would only play the game if it was given to them for free (legally of course) and what about those who are heavily into the MMORPG games like Starcraft and the like?
