Hey all, I always ended up with a second hand monitor or one that came with the system. my last dell *horrible death* left behind a 17inch LCD, which I plan on giving my mom. So now i need to get a new one for when I finally put together a new system. I heard Viewsonic was good and I hunted down this ViewSonic VX922
I found a price lower than the company for about $252

Is it worth it? any recomendations?

I recommend trying the monitor in store before buying it if possible.

I prefer used/second hand items over new items, that you know it has been broken in (and still works ok).

At least try getting one on ebay for cheap.

If you're a gamer, I'd be careful about widescreen. I had a 1440 x 900 19" widescreen LCD and I had to use quite a few workarounds to get a lot of games to play in the native res. I have the VX922 now and it's incredible. I never notice any ghosting. I'm a competitive CSS player, and play other FPS/RTS/RPG games fairly casually. It's a little bright out of the box, and there is a bit of a glow around the edges of the screen, every now and then I notice this when I'm playing F.E.A.R.

Hey thanks guys. Some reason I never thought of Acer ... I just remember seeing their keyboards as a kid hehe, now I'm stuck between the Viewsonic and the acer.

The monitor you are considering sounds fine.

At 2ns, the ViewSonic has excellent response time. My NEC has 4ns response time, and there is no ghost trails, etc, so you will be in excellent shape for games.

Secondly, your contrast ratio of 700:1 is also good. You should have a nice picture.

Third, ViewSonic is a respected name, and at the price you found, sounds like a good buy.

The new breed of flat screen monitors overall are surprisingly good--as long as you watch the specs. Before moving to my NEC flat screen , I had 17" SONY CRT. Sony's are known for top-notch pictures, but I actually like my NEC display ecven better. It is brighter, sharper, has plenty of contrast, etc.

Good luck,
Mike

Interesting that some folks are recomending Acer, when my experience with them is 180 degrees opposite. I find the quality and brightness to be dull and lifeless. I just replaced my VX922 with a VX2235 22" and I certainly would highly recommend either, though if your graphics card can handle it, the 22" is much nicer for some games and for playing videos on. Several co-workers sold me on the 19" Viewsonic, and I got it last year around July, and just now replaced it. Not that it was a bad monitor, just that I upgraded my video card and decided to put it to the test. I'm sure you can get good deals on the 922, and I don't think you can go wrong with it, if that's where your budget lies. From what I've seen, I certainly would check out the Acer model you want to buy in a store where you can actually see the picture live in a gaming situation, or similar to how you are going to use it. I don't know if it's just the model that my company bought, but they were less than I had hoped for when I unpacked them.
