Okay I just overclocked my CPU for the first time ever and I have a question because I think I might have messed something up?

Using CPU-Z: Under the section in the lower left "Clocks (Core#0)" there are various choices. Core speed/multiplier/bus speed/rated FSB.

This is the result I am getting:
bus speed: 333.1 mhz
rated fsb: 1332.3
core speed: 1998.4 Mhz OR 2997.7 Mhz
multiplier: x6 OR x9

Is it normal for cpu-z to fluctuate like this or should it stay the same constantly??? What did I do wrong?

If someone could tell me how I can paste pictures on here I will do that if you need me to.

you have speedstep enabled. it lowers your processor speed by lowering the multipler when the system is idle.

Saves power.

you can disable it in the bios.

I went back to the bios, disabled "EIST" which is speedstep according to my manual... anyway that didn't change anything... my cpu still fluctuates as I said earlier... any other recommendations?

ok I got it working now so cpu-z displays OC speed constantly... out of curiosity though, does it matter? Wouldn't it be better to leave those enabled so you're only using the OC when you need to be under full load???

I've heard the stability thing as well, but my personal opinion is that I'd rather have it running at full speed from the word go.

It would create instability in a PC during an OC that might be on the edge of being stable. The sudden ups and downs in speed would could be the straw that breaks your OC. Most guides I've read recommend turning it back on after you get a stable OC, to see if remains stable.

It's a cheap chip. I just let it run hard all the time.

But who's not to say it will last 5 years? I really don't get these OC time predictions people make...

but will you live with the same setup for 5 years?since people are posting on this forum.they are almost if not all are enthusiasts.and i doubt anyone in here will live with a high end pc for more than 1.5 years.

It's the same kind of predictions intel makes based on the warranty (3yrs) life of the cpu.

What I find interesting is that a series of chips are based on the same exact core with different multipliers (ie higher speeds) and all carry the same warranty period.....

Exactly my point, I honestly believe nobody can put their foot down on an exact guesstimate say to even the broadness of a year of when a cpu will die due to a big OC.

even the slowest cpu you get.if its a poor quality one.it wont even turn on.so everything just not what it seems to be!<=dono what that means lol

just get the best out of what you got.isnt that how human work and think?we spend the budget we have got on making things better.(OVERCLOCKING!!!)

If I had a boatload of money I would get a Q6600 and a TRUE and Prime it 24/7 @ 3.6Ghz if not higher, until it bursts into flames and note how long it took...that is if it ever crashs/burns :sol:

yeah i want to try that as well.but would intel know we have overclock and over volt it?or should we just return to them and say i use my pc looking at webpage and it suddenly shutdown and my firm alarm went off!lol

A rough estimate won't hurt. I usually base it off Intel's specs, which guarantee 3years.

OMG PLEASE HELP!

ok so after reading everything here, I disabled speedstep and all that, put my cpu at 2.8Ghz and booted... worked fine, and cpu-z displayed normally.... I ran prime95 yesterday for 6 hrs, and then another 12hr blend test over night... No errors reported so I thought everything was good... I shut down my computer, went to work... I just got home, was about to respond to you guys... when I got some ati diag BSOD... i was like... err... so I rebooted, and my computer froze at the GIGABYTE logo... after 10 minutes of waiting, I rebooted again... This time it said "bios recovery..." and restarted... Did this 3 times, and now it won't do anything... I boot, the fans kick in for a few seconds, and the shuts itself off, and reboots... over and over and over again!

I dunno wtf happened! I can't imagine this being OC related since the 2 stress tests in prime95 passed with flying colors, but what do I do now? I cant even get to a computer screen in order to restore my computer... I tried clearing CMOS, disconnecting all but essential hardware, and still nothing...???

I will be eternally grateful if someone can help me troubleshoot what hardware is causing this problem?? My first guess is the video card since I got the ATI BSOD before any other problems... but any way to find out, I don't have a spare PCIE card to test it...

Let me guess. You have a Gigabyte P35 DS3L or DS3R or something similar. The endless reboot occurs every 3sec interval.

If so, this is a issue with the motherboard, which has no clear (AFAIK) solution. Some people find it to be incompatibility with the ram, especially Crucial for some reason. Try clearing the bios by taking out the CMOS battery or using the jumper.

thanks for the superfast response i'm freakin out!!! I have a gigabyte EX38-DS4... do these have the same gigabyte syndrome?? Also, does this happen randomly after other system errors, or is it simply a bad motherboard that I need replaced? If it's the latter, and gigabyte is known for this issue, I think I might be better off switching to a different company...

Anyway, another question... can this be a PSU problem? I have a cooler master real power pro 650W... It's got decent reviews, but its also known to fluctuate in voltages a bit...

I'll try to clear cmos by taking the battery out and post back here soon. Rest of my specs are listed below:
EX38-DS4
E2160 (m0 stepping)
CM real power pro 650W
CM 690 case
Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 (2x 1 gb sticks)
MSI HD3870 OC edition
WD caviar se16 500gb HDD
samsung 20x dvd burner (don't know the model)

ok tried the cmos reset with jumpers and battery... no luck... still reboots... I see lights on the motherboard led display (I think its for the cpu), all my fans start spinning, and within seconds it reboots... over and over...

btw, I'm not sure because my system speaker isn't working properly, but I feel like I'm hearing a very very faint 2 quick beeps... I could be hearing things... but I think its coming from my case speaker... what does 2 beeps mean?

I'm not sure this issue is apparent in all Gigabyte boards, only the P35. Try taking one of the ram sticks out and switch the slots a few time. Also remove any peripherals attached to the system.

I tried using 1 stick of ram already, in all 4 slots one at a time... no luck, still reboots... and the beeps I was hearing is not my case speaker, it was from my cd drive...

currently I have only cpu/hsf, video card, 1 stick of ram in slot 1, and case power switch installed... nothing else, not even HDD... but I still can't get it to boot properly. Later tonight I'll try to take everything out of the case and try on my desk to see if it's a grounding issue but I seriously doubt it.

i dunno what to do... assuming I have to RMA... what part should I start with?? I guess it could be my video card, RAM, motherboard, PSU, or cpu... can you tell me from most likely to least likely so if RMA becomes the only option, I can return them in order...

thanks for all ur help thus far! I just don't understand how it can work fine for days, handle all the stress tests... then for no apparent reason, stop working... I'm depressed!
