Basically by the time they get the new client out, we'll have the 6xxx series out and ready to fold. Thus, they will still be behind in support for AMD :sarcastic:

Well, As long as the new client is better than the oh..... (How many year old) client the currently running the show. If is should be ok, on the HD6xxx. Unless there a huge design change..... then you'll find F@H scrambling to make a compatible client.

Sorry i haven't been able to talk lately, been busy with school and just as of this morning.... a dead desktop.

The Old faithful p4 desktop PSU, working hard for 5 years finally killed over. Got the psu replaced (with a nice Corsair TX 750W psu 😀 from the former AGI 400w psu (although for some reason i though it was a seasonic psu the entire time.) but motherboard not acting right. No beep, no post, but it powers up. Taken everything out, add the old ram that was in it before, and even including taking the cpu out and it's still acting the same way. My guess is one (or more) of the chips on the MB got taken out when the psu failed. 🙁

Well, at least i got my money worth out of the system. 5 years and like 3 or 4 months. Guess it's time to look at a new desktop.

Ok enough of my problems, to smithereen.

What client or clients are you using? Can you also tell me what Wu's you're getting?

If its SMP2, I've notice i been getting a lot of 67xx WU which is been dropping my PPD. Maybe you're seening the same thing? :heink:

I just installed the new SMP2 client the other day, but it didn't seem to help. FAHMON doesn't seem to want to work with my computer, so I'm not sure what WUs I'm getting. I'm also using the 6.23 GPU client on this machine.

Edit, I got FAHMON working, I'm running P2633 core A3 on my SMP client for a projected 760PPD (not counting early return bonus) and P7536 on the GPU2 core 11 on my GPU client for a projected 1800PPD. I've got about 7.5 hour return time on the CPU cores... not sure what the bonus point formula is.

Edit Edit: Opening CCC, it showed only 54% GPU usage. Setting Core 11 priority to "Blow Average" instead of "Lowest" bumped it up to 95%. I'll see if that affects my PPD.

well the other things i would do is:

1. switch to HFM.net as that updated regularly and shows smp2 bonus.

2. With ATI gpu (for now), i would most recommend changing the SMP flag on the SMP client to (-smp 3).

3. If you haven't done so, adjust the enviomental settings for your gpu to maximize points or reduce you're cpu usage. (look on first page under outlw6669 post)

I recommend putting -smp 3 flag on as it will free up a core for what ever you want to use and/or allow the gpu have a cpu core to use when ever needs it. It wont stave the gpu client and the smp client wont be bother by the gpu client.

I do have the environmental variables set properly, and I have the core priority set so that the smp client hopefully doesn't mess with the gpu client. Hmmm.

Edit: I got it figured out :bounce:

My OC had slipped - it wasn't locked into the BIOS, just set with AOD, which my antivirus had kicked out of my startup programs, and my bonus multiplier had halved. Got it going - 7,500-8,000 PPD now.

To folding! Uh... what's the tag for the beer-clinking smilie?

Just saying hello to the fellow folders here on Tom's. I'm mostly an article reader/lurker, but started folding for Tom's because I did most of my research here for my FIRST BUILD ever with the SBMs and tecmo34's thread. I had always wanted to build for a long time, but other distractions kept me from it. I'm a 4th year medical student and cancer runs in the family, so I see the value of folding/research.

Primary system:
Case: Azza Helios 910R (had to "mod" the side fan to fit the hugeeeee Scythe Mugen)
PSU: Corsair 850TX
Mobo: Gigabyte 790XTA-UD4
CPU: AMD 955 BE (OC'd to 3.8Ghz)
Cooler: Scythe Mugen w/ Scythe Ultra Kaze 3000(push)/Yate Loon D12SH (pull)
Memory: 8GB G.Skill Eco 1.35v 1600 Previously had 4GB OCZ Platinum 1600 – was very unstable
Current GPU: Asus CuCore Radeon HD5770 CF
Hard drive: WD Caviar Black 1TB
Optical: LG dvd/RW
Keyboard - Logitech G15
Mouse - MS Sidewinder
OS - Windows7 64-bit
I think I have some overhead with the 3.8 OC at 1.42V and core temp of 44 degrees C. I think just some more time and tinkering... (if anyone has some resources on overclocking).

I've also now got my HP HDX16 folding on it's GeForce GT130M which I set up through this program:

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1550668

It's a realllly easy way to get started folding, so share it! I experimented with it trying to get my 5770s to fold...didn't really work out too well, maybe needs some tweaking from me, but the GT130 is making some contributions!! lol

good folding!

welcome to the fold :sol:

GRATZ

Well finally got some time to be on here and spread the news of what else is going on in the Folding@home world.

1. 6 days ago, F@H had it's 10th anniversary.

2. In the same blog about the anniversary they did also confirm that the OpenCL/MM for ATI will require the client v7.

http://folding.typepad.com/news/2010/10/foldinghome-10th-anniversary.html

3. In about 6 to 7 days from now, Long term 1st place team [H]ardOCP, will finally be overtaken by folding@EVGA. Gratz, EVGA on that hard push to be the best.

Hello everyone.

I've just finished reading this thread and its answered nearly all my questions about F@H so I'd like to say a big weary eyed Thank-You...

I'm new to forums and folding but as I've frequently used Tom's Hardware as a source of information and help I decided to have a go at Folding and join the team.

I've managed to set up the GPU client and the SMP2 client, I think, but just have a few questions.

1. Does it matter that my CPU is an unlocked Phenom II 555 and not a true quad?

2. Monitoring the cores while folding shows loads on each cores but this varies and goes up and down. Is this normal or should it be loading the cores 100% if not being used for anything else?

3. Do the other components of a machine make a differance if folding on a GPU.

Your help is much appriciated and keep up the good work.

And as if by magic the rodent simian appeared! I'm glad to see you found the thread mate, I'm off to bed now and I'm a bit too drunk to type let alone answer any questions but I'm pretty sure someone will if not I'll be back online tomorrow.

Well I might be of some help. Although am a bit tired (or maybe a bit "crabby") after spending 5 to 6 hours catching about 4 to 5 dozen blue crabs. So if something doesn't make sense, you'll know why. 😉

1. Does it matter that my CPU is an unlocked Phenom II 555 and not a true quad?

No it doesn't matter. Although the Phenom II x2/3's are true quads with cores disabled due to different reasons. 😉

2. Monitoring the cores while folding shows loads on each cores but this varies and goes up and down. Is this normal or should it be loading the cores 100% if not being used for anything else?

For smp, that isn't normal. it should be 100% unless you configure or mis-configured it a in one of the few ways...

1. Easy to do of mis-configured, didn't add both "-SMP" flags to there proper locations. Although it may sound like you did that correctly.

2. Set the CPU usage in the setting of F@H client lower the 100%. SMP has a few issues with this setting as it does not function properly.

3. You've limit the number of cores that the F@H client can use. Like if you want to use 3 of 4 cores for example, You would type "-smp 3"

There maybe a few others but there slipping my mind ATM.

3. Do the other components of a machine make a differance if folding on a GPU.

sometimes but not always. Although the client are more of the issue than the hardware when it comes to other component.

ATI gpu client does (for some reason) need some cpu power to feed data to the gpu to keep everything running smoothly. If you have a ATI gpu, I would do 2 thing,

First set your 2 clients for the priority setting (idle/low): Set SMP to idle and GPU client to low. This will allow the ATI gpu client to have a the higher priority over the SMP client, Meaning the gpu client will not be starved of data.

Second, set your SMP client to "-SMP 3". that way, gpu has it's own core and the SMP wont be slowing down/bothered by the gpu client and/or anything else you maybe running (email, word, Ect).

For Nvidia cards, this issue isn't very common.

Although i have seen it happen over on the F@H help forums. One user on there has a few rigs folding but his primary two are a Core i7 920 with a gtx 460 and a 260+ folding and a core 2 quad (forget the model #) with 3 gtx 460s.

Well the one with the Core 2 quad need at least 2 cores open for the 3 GTX 460s to keep all the clients happy and running smooth. Although when all 3 gtx 460s where in the core i7, that cpu could at run full power and run the gtx 460's without any slow downs. Although other users with nearly the same core 2 quad setup dont face these issues. He just guessing it's a motherboard issue.

Beyond that. there not much about hardware affecting others. :/

Ram and Vram speed, bandwidth, and anything about 512MB and over have little to no affect on F@H performance.

PCI-e bandwidth/speed has no affect on F@H.

For the GPU client, cpu speed as no affects.

well i hope i answered the all questions in enough detail for you.

Welcome to the Toms Hardware F@H team and Welcome to the Fold.

Hi, thanks for the info, blue crabs?!, thats a new on on me.

Right so I re-installed the SMP client v6.30 making sure I put -smp in the right places.

I left the cpu usage on default 100%, I'm assuming if you type nothing it is set to whatevers in the [ ].

I typed -smp for additional client parameters so this should enable all cores??

When I got to the end it said -configonly flag given, so exciting.
4 cores detected
mpiexec is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Opening log file blah blah
Processing work unit
Work type b4 not eligable for variable processors
Core required: Fahcore_b4.exe
Core found
Working on queue slot 01

I ran fah6 app and its the same, it uses 100% but spreads it over the 4 cores i.e. 28 - 12 - 40 - 20, yeah that makes 100%

So I tried it on another rig running a dual core Opteron 1218, exactly the same, 100% spread over 2 cores.

Rig 2 has just taken about 15 hours to get to 92% thats completed 464400 out of 499375 steps.

Rig 2 is a DFI UT590SLI / Opteron 1218 @3ghz / 2gig Crucial Ballistix @DDR1000 5-5-5-18-23-1T

If it should be running flat out 100% then I'd like to sort it out, any help would be great.

Thank ya.

Yeah thanks mousemonkey, I'm getting there, where ever there may be, hopefully I will find some other friendly rodents on my travels. 😀

Rig 2 ran all night, when it picked up its next unit it was a FahCore_a3.

Now both cores are running 100% :bounce:

Hopefully the same will happen with the quad..

^Yeah, but once GPU3 Is released for the 5xxx series and probably for 6xxx series, I'm sure we'll be back to the top in no time once its out. I know I'll have more points in no time once that's made.

Also thank you!
