Question Frequent “USB Power Surge” notifications and occasional BSOD ?

Hi everyone, could really use some help troubleshooting an issue I’ve been experiencing recently.

Full Specs:
  • Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3
  • Ryzen 5 5600
  • Radeon RX 6700 XT
  • DDR4 2x16GB 3200mhz Adata Gammix d35
  • Corsair TX750M Gold PSU
  • 256GB 2.5" SATA SSD (Installed windows here)
  • 1TB M.2 SATA SSD (games)
Issue Summary:

Lately, I’ve been getting constant “Power Surge on USB port ” notifications in Windows 11—even when no USB devices are plugged in. It doesn’t seem to impact performance directly, but the notifications are annoying.

More worryingly, I’ve also experienced several BSODs (specifically: Kernel Inpage Data Error) which seem to be triggered by my secondary SSD (a 1TB M.2 SATA SSD used for games) suddenly becoming undetectable. After a restart, the SSD remains missing in BIOS/Windows. However, the system can still boot fine using the main SSD.

Another context is my case has a red LED on the power button that will constantly blinks if the M.2 SATA SSD is detected, but will stay red if the SSD is not detected, if that mean anything.

What I’ve tried so far:
  • Temporary fix: I can get the missing SSD to show up again by completely shutting down the system, unplugging all USB devices, powering back on, and then plugging USB devices back in after boot.
  • Checked SSD health using CrystalDiskInfo – still shows 97% health. (which I think is still excellent)
  • Disabled “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” for all USB controllers in Device Manager. This stopped the USB power surge notifications from appearing.

I’m concerned this might point to a deeper hardware issue and would like to identify which component is likely causing the problem—be it the motherboard, SSD, or PSU.

My Questions:
  1. What steps can I take to further isolate the root cause?
  2. Could the USB power surge warning and the BSOD caused by the missing SSD be related?
  3. Should I be more suspicious of the motherboard, SSD, or possibly the PSU?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

check all USB ports, if pins are bent or broken or something is shortening an USB port. Typically the back plate of the motherboard and the case could be such a culprit with USB issues
or the front panel of the case

disconnect the front panel for testing

eventually try a bread boarding it on a non conductive surface

reinstall AMD chipset drivers
update BIOS within BIOS (not in windows)
check RAM with memtest
check windows with dism commands
run a virus scanner

Will try checking the USB port for a bent pin

I'm also suspecting a PSU issue that cannot power the entire rig efficiently. would that be a possibility? and also as per the original question, is the USB Power Surge problem linked to the BSOD/SSD error?
