FX 6100 Vs AMD Phenom II X6 1045T? (Without OC)

Hello.

I am looking to get a new CPU because the one I have is not so great for what I need. Currently I have the AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz. It's okay, but man, it is really not that great under load. I do a lot of video editing/rendering, as well as gaming in 1080p and this cpu works well enough, but I feel like I need some more speed. I also have 8 gigs of 1600 DDR3 RAM.

Anyways. I was looking at 3 possible CPU's around a certain price range as I am on a reasonably tight budget.

Keep in mind, I have zero plans to overclock, as it's not something I understand enough to dabble in.

The main CPU I was looking at was the FX 6100. Seems like a great price for a 6 core, but I am reading mixed reviews on it's actual performance.

I was also looking at the Phenom II X6 1045T.

They are both the same price but I just don't know what to get to make it worth while to upgrade from my current cpu.

Again, I'll be doing lots of gaming and video editing/rendering with special effects in After Effects as well as photo editing.

One of the downsides (for me) is that the 6100 is AM3+ and my mobo only supports AM3 currently. So, i'd have to upgrade my motherboard as well. Which isn't THAT big of a deal as I am sporting a micro atx and would kind of like to get a full size ATX board.

What about the Phenom II X4 965 black? It seems to have insanely good reviews. Would it really be that big of a jump? It'd certainly be a lot cheaper than the fx-6100 route (since I'd have to get a new mobo)

I'd take the Phenom II 1045T 2.7GHz base with 3 cores going to 3.2 GHz on turbo and 6 real cores.

FX 6100 FX needs to be around 25% faster clock speed to level with Phenom II in many tasks (its less efficient) so with its 3.3GHz then 3.9 turbo they are going to trade punches in many things.

Phenom has 6 real cores. FX has 6 Bulldozer modules not 6 proper cores. Theres a reason you see 6100 CPU's so seemingly cheap while the thing they replaced (phenom II) is holding and increasing in price....... its not because AMD want to give you a warm fuzzy feeling.

The 965 you mention is a good CPU but not really for you as to really unleash that one you want to Overclock it.

Unless he has good baord, he is just as likely to blow out the Vregs as he is to fry his spu. Both are unlikely, but the cpu is not the only component effected by the OC.

True, but i'd rather not risk frying it or something similar. After I upgrade, I am giving the Propus to a friend to upgrade his machine. Overclocking is great, but probably just not going to be anything that interests me. I know enough about computers that I could probably do it without catastrophic failure, but i'd rather just have a good CPU out of the box.

clock for clock the phenom II are faster, but since the 1045 is some 700 mhz lower, the 6100 will be the faster of the 2.

So you're saying that even though the Phenom series as a whole is better, it'd be more wise to get the FX 6100 as the clock speed is higher? Good to know. Thank you.

On this occasion the FX 6100 is faster all round, The IPC may be lower marginally but the clock speed advantage and the memory controller which is far superior to the Phenom II's is where the gains will be seen.

The other advantage is that the FX will force you onto a 900 Chipset motherboard which will give you a upgrade path.

What about the 8120 or 8150? I'm getting mixed signals on the 6100 and I'd rather not spend the money on something that won't be what I need.

Again, I do a lot of 1080p video rendering/effects in After Effects as well as gaming (BF3, Diablo 3, Max Payne 3 etc)

I have the ASUS M4N68T-M V2.

I know that Intel makes a great chip, but the prices are pretty high and frankly, I just don't want to change my whole platform.

If you want lowish cost get the 1045T it will do all you need well

If your budget is HIGH get the i7 it will do all you need best

If your budget is middlish and slightly elastic get an i5 2500k it does reasonably well in the video stuff and rips the 8120/50 apart gaming for more or less the same cost.

1045T I see as a better buy than 6100 and the best choice if you want a cheap easy fix.

2500k or 2600k a better buy than 8150/8120 though the Intels will obviously require a new motherboard.

Therefore I am saying the Phenom X6 which is compatible with your motherboard and will speed up your rendering/editing, since changing either to FX or Intel requires a new motherboard both considered platform change!

That comparison benchmark from anandtech is really helpful. Maybe the 2500k would be a good choice after all. I have heard nothing but great things about intel, but I am just weary about a new cpu platform. What would I have to change other than motherboard? I've got an nvidia geforce gts 450 (but will likely get the gtx 560 ti soonish)

Would I have to change graphics cards as well? Or could I just get the 2500k and a matching motherboard and keep my existing stuff?

I can tell you from experience the fx-6100 multitask like a champ, I've owned one for about a year now, I have another machine with 8 gigs of ddr3 with a 1045t in it. I can tell you without a doubt, the fx-6100 with four gigs of ddr3 @1600 multitask much better. I sometimes jump out of games or Sonar to browse the net for stuff or run some other apps to check something and FORGET I have bad ass programs that by themselves use to load my old machine. I can do other things while Sonar renders large projects. You mention your chipset problem, but I can tell you the 6100 runs AWESOME with 1600Mhz ram on the 990chipset, and the UD3s from gigabyte are cheap and, well, durable (had one catch fire by the USBs in the back and it never stopped running, still works), and my 1045t seemed to run better plugged into a 990 board. I live in Louisiana and the fx-6100 handles the hot days with stock air at 3.9Ghz, and as a lot of enthusiast complained about, AMD makes it REAL easy to overclock this thing, including all settings from software if you wish, but the bios on most mobos is easy to use as well. It allowed me to build a pretty kick ass budget gaming machine for REAL cheap. Handles everything I throw at it, just like everyone who owns one says. Pair it with an HD 6850 for $145 and you can render all the video you want. If you don't believe me, read the owner reviews on NEWEGG for the 6100. If a new motherboard is out of the question, I would go with the 1045t, it's very close in performance and a little cheaper.

I just wanted to update that I went with the 1045t. However, I have been reading some things online that say that my mobo (asus M4N68T-M V2) is not a great board to use with my new cpu. It is listed as compatible on the ASUS site, but random posts saying that it could potentially overheat and fry itself?!

Help! I am pretty scared that I could ruin my machine. The cpu isn't here just yet, but I want to make sure that I don't fry everything!

Okay. I was reading in a couple of places that it's okay under idle/normal loads, but if you start using 100% load then it could get a bit too hot or something along those lines.

I picked up the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118128 Zalman CNPS5X cooler just in case. I won't be overclocking it on this board, but better safe than sorry since I DO use it @ 100% when rendering video.
