Sorry about the bad english but i wanted to say that having 40nm G200 wont help Nvidia much in competing with the 5x series of Ati unless they cut their card's prices.

I think competition is definately needed, but its not as tho were waiting 18 months or whatever here, so I dont mind seeing ATI atop it all for awhile.
One difference Im seeing from the very beginning, and everyone should give credit to, is to ATI and their ongoing support of the DX models and open source tech. Evn when nVidia held the lead for all that time, they failed to push DX10 and DX10.1 so, it isnt the same thing here.
At least we know pc gaming is improving with a ATI leadership, provided nVidia goes along this time

i wonder if these price cuts on the first three are permanent on newegg

brings 2 of them down to the $470 mark (still not worth it with the 5870 out)

John, you're an absolute Nvidiot... I've seen so many people come and go and claim this or that company is the best and honestly it's time they shut up.

Yes the GTX295 is a beast even with the new 5800 series released, I have 2 GTX295's in Quad SLI (also have a second PC with 2x 4890's) and I'm currently sitting on the fence waiting to see what the next upgrade will be! If by christmas we don't have any solid news from Nvidia I'll get 2 or three of the best available ATI cards and one more monitor for some triple monitor greatness! Why upgrade from the 295 if it doesn't get beat by the 5870? Simple, while 1 v 1 the 295 wins... 2 v 2 is a different story in almost every game out there!

Quad sli is great for folding, benchmarking, e-peen contests, but NOT for gaming!

Also, this whole thing feels very similar to when the 280 was released and it was coming close but not beating the 9800GX2... well over a year later and the GX2 seems to be forgotten, quad SLI is NOT worth it!

I have been building PC's for over 20 years and if there's one thing that is consistent, it is that what is the best today, will be a few notches down in 6 months. If either ATI or nVidia was to gain a solid string of victories, the other would cease to exist. And neither of them really wants to win because if they did, that would get all those with benchmarks in their image signatures off the "upgrade every 6 months" treadmill.

All I saw on these forums for 2 months is "don't buy anything now, the 58xx will trounce it" ... well that didn't happen. So the automatic fallback argument will now be "value" .... kinda like a Mustang owner sneering at a Porsche claiming the Mustang is "better" because it's cheaper or the baseball fan whose team is playing golf in a few weeks claiming that their team is better because while they are out of the playoffs, their team's payroll is only 40% of that of the teams that are in the playoffs. Hint....that's a major reason WHY they are in the playoffs.

We will also undoubtedly see all the rah rah stuff about advantages in power, heat, noise etc which interestingly enough were dismissed by those same people when the 295's were being compared with the 4870x2. One side will go rah rah about the 11 games now listed for DX11 release and totally dismiss the 103 games listed for PhysX. The other side will do the opposite.

OK we get it, you either don't have the money to buy a $500 card or you simply don't feel that 10% performance advantage is worth your $120. That's no reason to justify your choice with inflated claims or to "dis" the people who make other choices. The best always costs more. Remember when the 5870x2 comes out at it's announced $599, you will have to suffer your own words thrown back at you.

If there is anything to brand loyalty, it should be based solely on what games you are playing. Interested in the 103 PhysX games, then nVidia is for you. Interested in the 11 DX11 games, then ATI is for you. It's not supposed to be a religion. There is no wrong choice. Just buy what works for you and if you need the propaganda to feel good about your choice try and remember, "thou shalt keep thy religion to thyself".

ok everyone shut up seriously.

58** > gt200 series - bottom line.

anything else? we can talk about speculation all we want but you cant argue with benchmarks. have a nice day.

with the exception of the GTX295, they are about equal
the thing that hurts the GTX295 is the 896mb vram/gpu for resolutions above 1080p

true, buying the DX10 sucked by getting screwed by the g92 afterwards and the price drops

don't think that is happening this time though

i wish i had $400 for a 5870, though i am buying another 4870 1GB soon

The dx10 sucked mostly because Nvidia didn't have the tech available. Because they were in control of the market, that is what dictated it.

ATI are in control of the market now, dx11 etc is here, with Microsoft doing everything they can to push it.

This isn't dx10 all over again. Nvidia would love it to be, so would some of the more retarded nvidiots (do they really want progress stalled because of a love of Nvidia of all companies?), but tough *** basically, it's not gonna be.

there is a point to getting another 4870, it would give me close to 5870 performance for quite a bit cheaper
and being a college student, cheaper is going to win out

add to the fact that i want to spend about $1500 on a htpc/server this year, about $500 for the base htpc and about $900 for more HDD space (already have 4x640 in raid 5)

I think you're missing the big picture.

The 4870x2 is only as fast as a 5890 because of drivers and lack of current dx11 support. You are gonna regret buying that within 3-4 months if you do.

dx11 support i can live without, the speed as well (i realize that there are driver optimizations to make, thats why i said close)

also i play on 1080p so i should be fine

and you are right, i probably will regret it in 3-4 months, i did with the 8800GTS 640 as well

The 5870 is a single chip, while the GTX295 is two 280's sandwiched together. If you want the playing field to be square, compare a 295 to 5870x2 in Crossfire.

i think alot of people miss this. 295, you are comparing 2 GPUs, while the 5870 is 1. so you are not really comparing it correctly.

I have already pointed this out somewhere, a single slot card is still a single slot card.

Yes ATI wins the single gpu, but right now it is not the clear winner of the single slot crown, that will take either the 5850x2 or the 5870x2 to do that decisively.

this is true, its kind of even, but at the same time it wouldn't make sense to get a GtX295 between cost and power

though lets see how much performance ATI can extract with better drivers, and also using dx11 (instead of 9 or 10, there might be some performance there as well)

though back on subject (GT300- Next generation Nvidia 40nm chip yields are fine)

i think at this point its moot, i don't care about possible release
i want to see reviews or even specifications (not just rumors)

There is no point buying a gtx295, gtx285, gt{anything} right now because they simply lose, hard, to the equivalent ATI, either on price/performance or just plain performance.

yup (and there was never really a reason to get a GTX285, too much for such a little gain)

They also miss you are compaing a old gen card to a newest gen card it's not very fair to compare something like x1900XTX to a 8800GTX when one card is older tech it's how the tech industry works make the chips smaller faster cheaper and more powerful then it's previous.

It's just a shame the GT300 hasn't been already shoved on a PBC and let free to be benched to stop these contradicting rumors from obvious fans of one company to another. Frankly as long as Nvidia can get the GT300 chips out on the market before Black friday they did just fine.

Unless you are in the exclusive circle of the people producing and *** for the GT300 making wild accusations is baseless and thus a moot point. I can say the GT300 chip is 10000000 times more powerful then the GTX295 and can runs off 1w of power under load it's just as accurate as any other rumor.

Just wait for some results and one hard facts before throwing accusations around.
