I have contacted Rockstar support a total of 5 times. Although they were friendly and useful, they have exhausted all possible fixes of which none have worked. I am praying that you guys can shine some new advice down on me.

With over 1000 hours played of this game, I'll be very gutted if I can't get it to work. I have been trying to fix it for two weeks solid, pretty much.

I get the same error every single time:

Things I have tried so far:

  • Unplugging all USB ports except from a plain mouse and keyboard.
  • Stopping everything in ms-config apart from Windows services.
  • Turning off all start up services in task manager.
  • Deleting and reinstalling usb drivers.
  • Clean install of graphics drivers.
  • Clean install of GTA on different hardrives.
  • Deleting settings files and having the game recreate them.
  • Verifying Steam cache a million times.
  • Starting GTA in safe mode on lowest possible graphics.
  • Checking and fixing all Windows system files.
  • Making a second windows user profile with admin permissions.
  • Setting GTA to launch with admin privileges in compatibility mode Windows 7.
  • Clean install of GTA with Steam start with admin privileges.
  • Making sure GTA has access through Windows firewall.
  • Making sure the router has relevant ports open.

Possible Ideas I have left:

Fresh install of Windows 10
Resetting Bios
Buying a hammer and then a new PC setup :)

If we are truly in the brightest timeline, then someone out there knows how to fix this.

Hello there, really a lot of other users have exactly the same problem, no sign for a Solution from Rockstar...
See here (amongst many other forums) : https://gtaforums.com/topic/934020-...-0xc0000005-help/page/3/?sortby=date#comments
Support just keeps on bullsh*tting and keeps people busy with useless "things to do to narrow down the problem". Nothing works up to now.
And i don's suppose that hundreds of people have problems with their hard- or software resulting in the SAME ERROR... the only common item is THE GAME.

Okay guys I think I've found a WORKAROUND for Nvidia, I'm not ready to call it a fix yet. I can play for multiples hours, two days successfully. 5+ logged yesterday and multiple 3+ hour sessions today.

Only issue was when a modder was in the lobby. As soon as you get to close to them or they changed something like the sky/weather I would crash. They could still spawn things and make it rain but as soon as they got too crazy, I crashed.

A few comments ago I noticed someone tried the studio drivers from Nvidia with some success. So I thought I'd give them a try but before I installed them I made sure that I got rid of any trace of the old Nvidia drivers by using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller).

I did a few things early on to try and help the situation, so I'll give you a quick run down of what I did and your mileage may vary.

1. Reinstalled GTA from steam, MB BIOS updated, checked Driver Easy for any updates and installed....

2. DL'ed the Studio DCH WHQL Drivers from Nvidia, I'm running version "431.86-desktop-win10-64bit-international-nsd-dch-whql.exe" - You can find these by specifically finding your GPU in the menu listed for available downloads. see here.... Nvidia Driver Download

3. DL'ed and installed DDU - Google it, you'll find it. You should also run this and reinstall any drivers if you're running into issue.

4. Rebooted, THEN installed DCL/WHQL drivers.

5. Do no allow GeForce Experience to update driver, Also, do not use it auto configure for optimal settings. Steam should load them for you based on your last attempt at playing the game. If not check your graphic settings before you try any of the above. (Also, not my fault if you didn't read these instructions before trying)

6. Load GTA Online and see how long before you crash out. Could be minutes, could be hours, could be never. Like I said this is what worked for me, I'm not sure it will work for you.

7. Profit...... by selling your bunker and nightclub products.

It seems after the last update for GTA, which was the launcher update for me, was when I started having the most crashes. So some weird combo of GTA onine update and messed up Nvidia driver update broke something. There does seem to still be some residual memory leak or something. I notice a spike of CPU/GPU usage from time to time, but not like before when they would spike and I would crash out. So something in the WHQL version of drivers is working correctly, which honestly they should if they are WHQL certified drivers.

Try for yourself, like I said. Mileage may vary.

Thanks,

So here was my fix... Now I'm not too sure which did it, but this is what I did.

  1. Completely uninstalled geforce experience.
  2. Manually downloaded another driver number, I went back to 436.02. (late august 2019, also, I did not reinstall experience... I only did the driver)
  3. I had a controller that was "new" to my PC within the past month, I didn't crash before it so I figured I'd unplug it when I play GTA5, seeing how I use mouse/keyboard anyway.
I just played for like 3 hours and finally, no crash. Good luck!

Edit: Played the next day and crashed to desktop again. sigh.

I confirmed that worked for me. I have the usual suspect ring with gta 970. After casino update i experienced random crashes after a while of playing online. I removed everything of nvidia using DDU and install WHQL DRIVERS (latest). I played today about 2 hours without crash (usually i took crash after 20-30min gaming). Thank you, i hope this will be working for ever

Anybody got an actual fix for this yet? It's becoming more and more frustrating. I've tried every possible "fix" inclduding someon the forum and nothing has yet worked for me.. Hope this is resovled soon. I just want to play the damn game without re-booting it every 20 minutes.

Ive had some luck with nvidia studio drives. But only tested for about 1 x 3 hours and 1 x 6 hours.
So i will not call it fixed yet, but still hopeful..

Studios didn't do anything for me. Crashed again in the similar time-scale.

The following steps have seem to have worked:

  1. Find your GTAV directory folder (Local Disk: (D/B/C) > Program Files > R* Games > Grand Theft Auto
  2. Right click and select properties on GTAV
  3. Select the "Compatibilty" tab.
  4. Run the program in comp mode for Windows 7
  5. Check mark the "Disable full-screen optimisation" option.
This SEEMS to have resolved it. I've ran the game for over half an hour and everything seems to be working as normal. No crashes. I will keep updating. This may not be a fix just yet. But it sure does look promising.

EDIT: This worked for around 2 hours and has crashed once.

Okay 2 weeks of testing passed here is a temporary solution or workaround. Install Windows 8.1 if you can and that's it ..done no more crashes! if you're willing to put so much effort looking for solution then its not that much of a big deal ..yeah i know windows 8... but hey atleast it works . just make a temporary partition or something if you dont want to delete your win10 atleast you can play untill R* fix this.. I have 5 friends who tried this and they havent crashed for days. and drivers ? install latest or whatever version you want it doesn't matter.

Hey,
So I've open a ticket with Rockstar support and they told me this could be a nvidia driver issue.
Basically they told me to remove my antivirus, reboot the pc in safe mode, remove the driver and install the previous version of Nividia driver, if it's still crash go for the older version... and so on...

I feel a little scammed by this answer it's going to take a long time ... Anyway I'm gonna try this week-end we'll see.

Original message :

Found the cause and a fix for client crashes that began around the time of the launcher update.
step 1 google this "nvidia advanced driver search"
step 2 plug in info for your gpu
step 3 install the drivers for your gpu that were released in january 2019 (before the problem started)
step 4 enjoy the fix

lock this thread after the first person that replies confirmation so this fix doesnt get lost in the pages

went from 30-50 crashes a day during troubleshooting to zero crashes today.

Studio driver 431.86 worked for everyone I know.

Went from crashes EVERY 20 min to ONCE in the past week.

ALL I DID was uninstall the current drivers. Reboot. Install the new drivers. Reboot. I didn't use programs to uninstall them or root around and directories to remove all traces. Quick. Simple. 3 minutes.

My pc is clean. It has NO additional crap installed that I dont need. So I dont have additional conflictslike a VPN or mods or stufflike that. if this fix doesn't work for you maybe you have additional conflicts

Btw I waited a week to post this just to be certain

I can confirm this does work. I rolled back to the previous driver after my "work around" that temporarily stopped the crashing. I've noticed that NVDIA have released yet another driver as of 1/10/2019. So this could, COULD be a fix? The patch notes are to vauge to know for sure, but I'll stick with the current drivers until its confirmed by NVIDA or R* that a new set of drivers will resolve the crashing issues. Hope this helps. :)

Ok I haven't tried that yet but the responses seem quite hopeful, still why do we have to go back to previous to drivers to play one game? Call me kind of a noob but won't we have worse FPS performance with a driver that was released 9 months ago?

I don’t feel like it’s very fair of Rockstar to make us do this - if it’s crashing with all the latest drivers, perhaps it’s something wrong in their game engine that they were getting away with before?

I just built my new system with a 2080 Super and don’t have an older driver to fall back on. It sucks that such a high end system (3700X, 32GB RAM, and 2080 Super) should be having such issues.

[2019-08-22 01:29:42.653] [ ERROR ] Exit code 0xc0000005 indicates a game crash (STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION)
Technically(programming talking), it means somewhere in memory was accessed which should have not.

[2019-08-22 01:29:42.235] [ ERROR ] GameComm: ReadFile failed.
Make sure you have all permissions of root GTA folder. ReadFile failed is too generic, just hope it's not related to runtime/dll files.

I assume it's kind of runtime mismatch, usually incompatible/load-at-runtime causes this issue. Sometimes it's codebase(game) fault, which you should have wait from Rockstar games to rock, and fix the issues, or as mentioned dll mismatch.

Don't know , what runtimes GTA uses, but here some suggestion.
Make sure you have only one(latest) .Net framework.
In windows programs and features, check how many VC++ runtime do you have, for example you may have two VC++ 2015, one with patch 1, and one with patch 2. try to install the old patches.
Note: VC++ 2013 <> VC++ 2015, so installing VC++ 2013 won't be covered by VC++ 2015!, mind patches, not major versions.

Another possibility is game ships some dx3d DLL files, this could make some issues too, due to incompatibility. but too rare.

Another check:
Keep an eye on RAM usage, RAM usage should get bigger and bigger, but not infinity, if you experience crash at a certain moment of RAM usage, so this could be issue with memory leak(sadly, you cannot do anything about it, blame programmers)

Another check:
Try the game with lower versions of VGA card, sometimes nVidia/AMD mess around with faulty drivers

Another check:
Move the GTA root folder in root, for example move from 'C:\program files\rockstar games\gta v' to 'C:\gta v', and try again(note: a new install to that path is more safer, over manual file move)

Hope it helps.

Just a fresh update to everyone who's hopeful that we finally found a fix for the issue: unfortunately i have to say no, we didn't. I have the same issue, tried everything, nothing worked, etc etc. Tried to downgrade display driver to 436.15, then 430.64, game still crashes. Maybe you guys with the big gun 1080s you are lucky that you could make it work with old studio drivers, but i have 780s and i don't have any studio drivers to install at all. So guys i have to say that the only thing we can do now is waiting for Rockstar/Nvidia/Superman/Batman to fix this... :(
