hey, getting new board 2morrow (kt7a raid)

and i'd like to get some advice on how people apply their arctic silver.
ie, small dab on core and then seat hsf, or spread goop before putting on hsf, etc...

thanks

Well first I get really fine grit sand paper (I mean REALLY fine grit), get a piece of glass, put the sand paper down on the glass and wet it down. Then I sand the heatsink really really really nice and smooth, then same with the core. After you install the chip put paper thin layer on hte core then put the heatsink on.

Yeah, Griz may be going over the line with the sanding of the core stuff. That is really pretty brave. I don't even think that sanding the HSF is all that necessary.

It’s no big deal to sand your CPU.
I sanded my 900 Tbird and it works great!
Before I could run my fingernail over the CPU and feel the writing on it.
After the sanding nothing but pure smoothness. I also lapped my Copper Hedgehog and then polished it with some aluminum wheels polish until I had a mirror shine. I just wish I would of had some arctic silver (don’t know how good this gray [-peep-] is).
I highly recommend lapping (sanding) the CPU & heatsink and think the risks are blow way out of proportion.

Thx & Cya

make sure the sand paper is a very very fine grain. like the ones car detailers use to sand the paint before polishing. go to a car part store and ask them for on. and don't be too generous with the grease...

Would you know the grit number of the sandpaper that you used?

remember that higher numbers for sandpaper = finer grit and i would go finer than 600 more like 1000. From what I gather you just want to take off the lettering.

Not make a difference eh....... Don't forget I'm the one who had the 750 at 1050 at 27degrees C!!!!!!!!!!

I don't hate Intel............ Do I?

The grid of the sandpaper is 800, waterresistant paper!
And make the sandpaper wet with a wet finger( NO drops),
When you grinding KEEP it FLAT.
Check the flatniss, put compound on the CPU (very little rub it with a rasorblade on) and push the HSF to the cpu, and check again the surface of the HSF, There must be compound from the whole core area on the HSF be visible.
IMPORTANT: see instructions on articsilvercompound website, http:/www.articsilver.com/artic_silver_instructions.htm

Whats the deal with the copper shims that are sold?
Are they really nescary necesary needed?
And if you do use one do you use the compound on the shim 1st then between the shim and heatsink?

Have you guys noticed the warnings with as?
Don't eat it.
Don't squirt it in your eye, nose, ear, or any other accessible body orifice.

Don't give it to children or leave it laying around where kids can get a hold of it.

Don't smoke it.

huh?

the glass keep the sandpaper flat so you get the bottom of that heatsink PERFECTLY flat. if you are just sanding by holding the heatsink in one hand and sanding with the other you will not get it flat, you will just make it even worse than it already is.
