So, I've been dload'ing tons of maps (about 3GB so far) and I see some
people say to put their .bsp in the hl2\maps folder and others in the
hl2mp\maps folder.

However, some don't say. So what is the difference other than the
name? And, how the heck do I know whether to use hl2 or hl2mp when not
stated?

Thanks.

In the readme or on the website it must be stated for which game the
map is made for?
Maybe you're downloading maps for counter-strike or one of the new
mods?
Or it is old HL1 maps

Deatmatch = HL2DM
Singleplayer = HL2

(As CF wrote)

Maps named cs (rescue hostages) or de (defuse) is normally maps done
for counter-strike
Maps name dm is for deathmatch

HL2 is single player, HL2MP is for multi-play.... Pretty simple....

Nope, they're a bunch of rars/zips I got off ftp.skynet.be/pub.
Unzipped, they total about 3.5GB.

Being one of the HL1 beta testers and one of the early 60 CS players,
it's always ticked me off how many people just zip their maps (and
extra files) into a flat-level file. I have over 2500 CS maps and
about 1500 HL1 maps. I spent hours moving files around. Especially
those with those map-sets that need specific folder names (which it
appears HL2 can use).

I spent about 3 hours last night moving files around and hoping that
some of the "materials" files don't need specific folder names.

So, a plea to all map makers. Use folder locations in your zip/rar
files AND detail in the readme.txt.

God, that's another thing. DON'T use readme.txt. Call the "readme" by
the map name. That way when those of us bulk unzip, we don't end up
with ONE readme.txt file and have to go back and scan all the zips for
the detail.

A few extra minutes on your packaging will save tons of time on our
end. And make it more likely people will use your map.

For the HL2 maps you can embed xtra files (models/materials) into the
bsp file
Personally I am using that approach
winbspzip is a wonderfull util :)

Atm I am testing if I can do the same with soundfiles

Readme's:
Don't call these the same as the mapname as when you play CS the
de_mydefusemap.txt contains the description shown when the map is
started
I am using eg de_mydefusemap_readme.txt
