If the Core i3-3220 is matching a FX 8350, then there goes all of that stuff about how dual cores are doomed for gaming. Before you say that its not optimized for AMD FX, the thing is only a couple of of FPS behind a overclocked i7 4770k. As FX owners like to say, "the difference in FPS is not noticeable".

I personally don't think the i3, a dual core with hyperthreading, is going to all of a sudden become terrible for gaming, and this is why I am going to pick up a i3-4340 at Microcenter for $129.There isn't just a lot of empirical evidence, even in well threaded games that it just cant play games decently anymore. Its good for what it is- a $120 processor for budget gaming.

Despite this, people still knock the i3s for just being a "dual core". To me, that's like turning down a FX 8350 because "its from AMD".

I'd love to see more info on what the "custom benchmark" is so that us readers can recreate and contribute to the results. It seems that this blanket statement has become the standard for Tom's reviews, and I feel it adds a layer of ambiguity that many of us don't appreciate. Even something as simple as a video of what this walkthrough entails would be sufficient to recreate the results, well as well as possible in a game with so much dynamic content.

I'm also curious as to the omission of the GTX780 in this testing, it seems like there is a huge jump from the GTX770 to the GTX780Ti, $350 to $700 USD which is double the price. The GTX780 sits nicely in the middle at $500 and is the logical choice for many gamers.

Don't listen to the knee jerk, beta contrived, negativity. This is a masterpiece and the PvP campaigns are incredible. Just because F2P is the MMO fad these days TESO is worth every single dollar. Old school EQ1 types: the magic is here. As always, well done Bathesda.

Yes this game is worth every penny. Before I bought it I was thinking it would probably end up being a waste of my money. Though now that I've actually had hands on with this game I'm very impressed. Plus, we are already getting the first update an tons of patches. So they are staying on top of their game at Zenimax & Bethesda.

This game is not one of those easy MMO's either. I've died countless times by some of the easier monsters lurking around out in the wild. Wandering around I've found multiple natural wildlife just like Skyrim. There were deer, bears, wolves, frogs, rabbits, birds, mudcrabs, an the list goes on. So there is tons of exploring to be had in this MMO. It's as stay on the grid like WoW. You can almost go anywhere on the map that you see just like Skyrim.

The quests at first are bland but it's just giving you time to learn the basics. I've just now started wandering into quests where I'm dying time after time trying to figure out how to defeat the boss or to complete the puzzle while monsters are coming after me. Definitely a better experience if you have a nice group of friends which I don't have at the moment lol

Anyways the server is down for the update an patches right now so I thought I'd come here an let out my thoughts on the title once more. If you haven't picked this game up yet an you have this gut feeling that you really want to than I'd go ahead an pull the trigger on it. It's worth the money unless you just really don't want to get to caught up in an amazing game that you lose self control 😛

@Zombie615 I completely agree with everything you said. It just doesn't have the personality that Elder Scrolls games have - it feels lifeless, and having a ton of random people running around really just ruins any sense of story or setting. Not to mention, the quests seem to be a complete rehash of any other MMO. It just doesn't have that Elder Scrolls feeling.

I'll be waiting for The Elder Scrolls VI.

Yeah, I'm waiting for the next installment too. I thought I'd dive into this one for now an even if it isn't the greatest game I'm supporting the franchise that I've been a fan of since I was in my early teens. So with that said hopefully Bethesda an Zenimax are putting part of this money from the subs into a pot for the next game.... Fallout 4 or as you said Elder Scrolls VI.

Great article, thanks!
Why not doing the same kind of tests while in a large pvp battle in cyrodile? I mean the game engin has been design to run with 200 peoples on screen so it would be great to see how it does his job.
I'm enjoying the game right now, and I really hope it's not going to be F2P.

A lot of high-quality MMOs have to start off as pay-to-play, to recoup development costs. A lot of the MMOs that are freemium from the very start are either very unpolished and half-baked or are pay-to-win (might as well have a monthly fee!). There are exceptions here and there, but I'm not going to skip a good MMO solely because it has the average monthly fee, and exchange it for something inferior. Leave the "only pay if you want to do well" worship at home, Don.

I was quite surpised when they annonced this game. I mean, WoW was already at a steady decline by then.
Everyone knows that the greatest parts of elder scrolls were things like story pacing, exploration, and a lot of ETC.
And most people know those suffer in multiplayer, and even more on MMOs.

Shinethelight99, you say that subscription gives you contenent? Well, we will see about that, there is no guarantee. After all, WoW expansions costed money, even thou you had to pay subscription.

A lot of content is added to WoW between expansions.

Another issue with subscriptions is that back in 2007 when I started playing WoW there used to be very good support, if you had a problem you could call Blizzard and get hold of someone or in-game you could chat with a GM, all that has been replaced with automated systems in order to increase profit and, from what I can see (I have subscribed to ESO) that is following the same model. I had to email them today because the phone lines are so busy and all you get is a generic response that might as well come from a computer. So, what are you, now, paying subscriptions for? WoW has got its player base hooked, nobody wants to not-play their characters forever, there is a connection of labour there and even if it's a tedious game with a vile culture, I go back and re-expose myself to it and after a week I can see why I don't play but I level my characters and after three months stop again. I'll play ESO for two months, then play Wildstar for two months, then level my characters in WoW for two months. I assume players will be more promiscuous with their MMO affairs as the market is saturated.

They have already announced a whole new zone coming in ~1month with new dungeons, multi-group content(RAIDS) and a increase to the level cap.

Yes, you heard that right...they are increasing the level cap 6 weeks after launch with content that most games would consider an expansion.
Further they have promised to do this every 4-8 weeks with no plans for a formal paid expansion right now.

If you don't think that a Solsthiem size DLC justifies the $20-30 sub you'll be paying in that time, then I don't know what would.

The GTX 660 with a intel Core 2 Q6600 at 2.4Ghz (stock) is capable of getting a steady 30fps 1080p at Ultra. Keep in mind the Q6600 does indeed bottleneck the GPU due to it's... power. LGA 775 isn't the thing you want to upgrade to :)

On the issue of the subscription, one wonder why one is required when the support is as woeful as this:

I started a character earlier this evening and when I typed the name, I could no...

Yes but this was an error due to the game. I tried to retype the name in capitals but I still couldn't. I then went through with it and didn't realise until later that the name wasn't capitalised. Is there no way you can just change the beginning letter of each name to a capital? It is not a name change, just a change in format.

@ sjc1017

I wouldn't respond to quickly to someone asking your type of question either. Could have just deleted your character right after realizing what happened to the name. Problem solved.... jesus people use your head. This game is worth the $15/month. When you first start playing it you might not think so. Give it a chance an get a few levels on your character an go exploring. It gets very in depth.

On another note.... Blizzard had to make people pay for expansions because they didn't have as much money as Bethesda or Zenimax. You do realize Blizzard's company account probably consists of nothing but WoW profits. Behtesda consists of many award winning titles all of which are still played today. Even Morrowind is played still after more than 10 years after release. So quit comparing the two. Bethesda is going to keep things straight unlike the money hungry Blizzard company.

Well, you are more charitable than I am. If you pay a subscription for a service don't you pay for fine details to be sorted out? I had a reason why I had to press on with it, I couldn't get the game to accept capitalisation, while alt-tabbing out to check my shift-key worked fine. I was wanting to play with a friend and, at that point, was unsure whether the fault would continue.

Eh, what the heck are you talking about? Blizzard had PLENTY of financially successful games before WoW. Have you heard of Starcraft? Warcraft III?

Diablo series as well.

Either way Blizzard's business model sucks now days and Bethesda hopes to take the MMO market out of their hands. I have faith in them on doing so but at the end of the day I could care less.

Diablo sucks IMO

ZOS is promising to give players ~8 new zones with each having a new tier of content over the course of a year free with the sub, so if we're doing a fair comparison to WoW and other sub-based MMO's you can cut $60 from the annual sub cost.
That means that you're paying ~$10 sub fee per month relative to the amount of content you would traditionally receive.
Obviously we'll need to wait and see if they can stick to that schedule after releasing craglorn.
If they do there should be nobody left questioning the value of the sub for this game.

"Free with sub"... Wait WHAT? LOL

Yeah as in you don't have to pay for a formal expansion because they don't have any plans to make one. You get expansion content with the sub forever with no other cost.

The point being that no Free to play games produce the amount of expansion content that WoW does and WoW charges you $60 for it. ESO promises to give you more than that over the same eriod of time with no box fee.
That effectively means that you are getting more content than any F2P or B2P game can deliver at a lower cost than any sub game

Which also means WoW fanboy's should grab your umbrella now because ESO is going to make it rain on your sorry game lmao!!!

Like I said Bethesda knows what the people want an they know how to deliver. WoW ignores the people an wants the people to deliver.... their paychecks and life.
