I understand that i need a router to go wireless w one laptop only

yes and no

yes-> you need a wireless capable router if your modem is not wireless capable

no-> not all routers are wireless capable.. make sure you buy wireless routers

better yet, check with your internet provider if they can replace your modem with a gateway modem/wireless capable modem and insist that you want to connect wirelessly. i think those providers have cheaper workarounds in replacing the modems with wireless one. maybe an extra charge is added but it will be minimal
