Hi Guys,

Just a quick question really. Out of the two processors above which one would you go for?

The i7 9700k is relatively cheap at 317 pounds (only slightly more expensive than ryzen 7 3700x sitting at 280-90). Now i haven't kept up with pc parts since i built the current PC im using so the i9 series is completely new to me. I don't overclock at all so wondering which would be more suitable for me. The i9 is coming in a bit more expensive for what seems like slightly lower performance but you get more threads. If you have any other suggestions on other CPUs please feel free to comment them. Could you also maybe throw in some suggestions of a mobo to pair with these chips or ones you have suggested.

My current specs PC are as follows:

Processor: i5 6600K
GPU: ROG GTX 1070
Mobo: Asus z170 Pro
Power supply: EVGA 750w gold
Ram: 2 x 8 gb corsair 3000mhz

Thanks in advance!

Baz

Thank you for both of you inputs guys. I did not realise how expensive the I9 was so i guess that is out of the question.

I am now considering it due to the thread counts. Would you say that the i7 9700ks direct competitor is the ryzen 7 3700x ? Im looking for something around this price range.

Yes 3700X and 9700K is at the same price range. 9700K is better in gaming performance as of at the end of 2019, but 3700X probably outlive 9700K because of its threads.

It is slightly slower than 9700K, but as a 9700K owner, I think I would prefer it over 9700K now - actually I would go with R9 3900X but I...

using the pc for? and the rest of the plan build? what resolution?

My bad. Will be used for gaming at 1440p 144hz (where possible). Also will be changing the gpu at a later date to maybe a 2070 super or waiting for the 30 series of gpus to come out. Other parts will be swapped out when needed/necessary.

Hi, at that resolution and refresh rate either of those CPU will be great. If youre not overclocking and you can get the i9 9900 for a good (reasonable) price I would go for that, just to have the extra threads available for future games.

Then again, either R7 3700X or i9 9700K, or i9 9900 (non-k) will be good for your needs. Having a really strong GPU will be more important for 1440p 144Hz panel. And for your actual gpu (GTX 1070) any of those cpu will be able to keep it at its max power delivering.

Cheers

As you will also need to change the mainboard, why are you not thinking about buying an AMD CPU? Why not a AMD RYZEN 9 3900X? 12 core, 24 threads. Same price with 9900K but 4 cores and 8 threads more. And I believe it will outlive 9900K because of these extra cores and threads.

9700K is more than enough for QHD gaming. You will not gain anything but maybe a few extra frames with a 9900K, and in some games as the core count is the same, 9700K is better. So if you want to go with 9700K because of the price it is OK. And at the price of 9700K, you can buy an AMD with 8 cores and 16 threads. Again why can be thought as a good alternative.

When comparing cpu's for gaming don't just look at average fps, look at minimum 1% & 0.1%. I was in a similar position looking at both 9700k and 3700X for 1440p 144Hz gaming using a 2080 Super. I went with 3700X as I felt its a better long term option but to be honest it was very close, both are great choices.
