So I'm using iDVD on a G4 1ghz (upgraded from 400 MHZ). It's about an
hour long with titles and a few fades and dissolves between chapters.

Is it normal to take the better part of an hour to "encode assets"? the
progress barber pole is spinning and spinning, the disc burn wheel is
spinning, VERY slowly, but nothing is burning.

Is this normal?

Yes.

My last project, Three 15 minute shorts, and one 99 picture slide show,
took three hours to encode. 933 Mhz G4.
